NC's Anti-Predatory Lending Law: Doing What It's Supposed To Do: A Reply
We reply to criticisms of our recent study about North Carolina's Anti-Predatory Lending Law reducing predatory loan terms and preserving access to credit (NC's Anti-Predatory Lending Law: Doing What it's Supposed to Do). To examine whether the decline in overall subprime lending in North Carolina, following passage of the predatory lending law, was due to a decline in loans with legitimate terms or to a reduction in loans with abusive terms, we examined specific market segments and market practices using loan level data from the Loan Performance Asset Backed Securities (ABS) database. Our study revealed that, although the total volume of subprime originations in North Carolina declined, the number of home purchase loans was unaffected by the law. Given the robustness of the LP data, we are baffled by the criticism and disappointed by confusion that has arisen over mistaken data interpretation. For reasons discussed in this paper, we stand by our descriptive study and will continue to use LP data in our future work.Technology and Industry, Regulatory Reform
Fuel economy and exhaust emissions characteristics of diesel vehicles: Test results of a prototype Fiat 131 NA 2.4 liter automobile
The vehicle was tested on a chassis dynamometer over selected drive cycles and steady-state conditions. Two fuels were used, a U.S. no. 2 diesel and a European diesel fuel. The vehicle was tested with retarded timing and with and without an oxidation catalyst. Particulate emission rates were calculated from dilution tunnel measurements and large volume particulate samples were collected for biological and chemical analysis. It was determined that while the catalyst was generally effective in reducing hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide levels, it was also a factor in increasing particulate emissions. Increased particulate emission rates were particularly evident when the vehicle was operated on the European fuel which has a high sulfur content

An observational study of temperature and thermal images of surgical wounds for detecting delayed wound healing within four days after surgery
Aim: This study aimed to elucidate the infrared thermal patterns and temperature readings of the surfaces of surgical wounds for detecting delayed wound healing within four days after surgery.
Background: The nursing assessment of surgical wounds within the first four days after surgery is commonly based on visual and physical examination. Surgical wounds with delayed healing may be not detected if they do not exhibit signs such as redness or exudate within four days after surgery.
Design: This study was conducted using prospective observational design with reference to the STROBE Statement to examine the temperatures of surgical wounds in their natural settings.
Methods: Based on convenience sampling, 60 participants admitted to the colorectal surgical ward for enterostoma closure from January to November 2013 were recruited.
Results: Although both infected and non-infected surgical wounds exhibited a significant increase in wound temperature from Days 1 to 4, the infected wounds revealed a statistically significantly lower temperature than the non-infected ones. Within the infrared thermal images, the infected wounds presented with partial warming of the skin surrounding and along the incision, suggesting that delayed healing could be identified.
Conclusion: This study demonstrates that delayed wound healing can be detected within the first four days after surgery for early intervention of prevention and treatment before discharge
An X-ray view of absorbed INTEGRAL AGN
Aims. We present a 0.2--200 keV broad-band study of absorbed AGN observed
with INTEGRAL, XMM-Newton, Chandra and ASCA to investigate the continuum shape
and the absorbing/reflecting medium properties. Methods. The sources are
selected in the INTEGRAL AGN sample to have a 20--100 keV flux below
8 \flux (5 mCrab), and are characterized by a 2--10 keV flux
in the range (0.8--10) \flux. The good statistics allow us a
detailed study of the intrinsic and reflected continuum components. In
particular, the analysis performed on the combined broad-band spectra allow us
to investigate the presence of Compton reflection features and high energy
cut-off in these objects. Results. The column density of the absorbing gas
establishes the Compton thin nature for three sources in which a measure of the
absorption was still missing. The Compton thin nature of all the sources in
this small sample is also confirmed by the diagnostic ratios F$x/F[OIII]. The
Compton reflection components we measure, reflection continuum and iron line,
are not immediately compatible with a scenario in which the absorbing and
reflecting media are one and the same, i.e. the obscuring torus. A possible
solution is that the absorption is more effective than reflection, e.g. under
the hypothesis that the absorbing/reflecting medium is not uniform, like a
clumpy torus, or that the source is observed through a torus with a very
shallow opening angle. The high energy cut-off (a lower limit in two cases) is
found in all sources of our sample and the range of values is in good agreement
with that found in type 1 Seyfert galaxies. At lower energies there is clear
evidence of a soft component (reproduced with a thermal and/or scattering

Gas Accretion Traced in Absorption in Galaxy Spectroscopy
The positive velocity shift of absorption transitions tracing diffuse
material observed in a galaxy spectrum is an unambiguous signature of gas flow
toward the host system. Spectroscopy probing, e.g., NaI D resonance lines in
the rest-frame optical or MgII and FeII in the near-ultraviolet is in principle
sensitive to the infall of cool material at temperatures ~ 100-10,000 K
anywhere along the line of sight to a galaxy's stellar component. However,
secure detections of this redshifted absorption signature have proved
challenging to obtain due to the ubiquity of cool gas outflows giving rise to
blueshifted absorption along the same sightlines. In this chapter, we review
the bona fide detections of this phenomenon. Analysis of NaI D line profiles
has revealed numerous instances of redshifted absorption observed toward
early-type and/or AGN-host galaxies, while spectroscopy of MgII and FeII has
provided evidence for ongoing gas accretion onto >5% of luminous, star-forming
galaxies at z ~ 0.5-1. We then discuss the potentially ground-breaking benefits
of future efforts to improve the spectral resolution of such studies, and to
leverage spatially-resolved spectroscopy for new constraints on inflowing gas

Family stories, public silence: Irish identity construction amongst the second-generation Irish in England
Formal narratives of history, especially that of colonial oppression, have been central to the construction of national identities in Ireland. But the Irish diasporic community in Britain has been cut off from the reproduction of these narratives, most notably by their absence from the curriculum of Catholic schools, as result of the unofficial 'denationalisation' pact agreed by the Church in the 19th century (Hickman, 1995). The reproduction of Irish identities is largely a private matter, carried out within the home through family accounts of local connections, often reinforced by extended visits to parent/s 'home' areas. Recapturing a public dimension has often become a personal quest in adulthood, 'filling in the gaps'. This paper explores constructions of narratives of nation by a key diasporic population, those with one or two Irish-born parents. It places particular emphasis on varying regional/national contexts within which such constructions take place, drawing on focus group discussions and interviews for the ESRC-funded Irish 2 Project in five locations — London, Glasgow, Manchester, Coventry and Banbury
