An evaluation of auroral all-sky camera observations
From photometric, all-sky camera, and visual observations
of a moderate auroral display, it is found that the
all-sky camera compares favorably with the visual observer
in detecting and recording auroral forms. The visual
observer can make instantaneous observations and so can
detect rapid changes and auroral forms lasting only a few
seconds, whereas the poorer time resolution of the all-sky
camera prevents it from recording very short-lived phenonema.
However, the ability of the all-sky camera to accurately
record the shape and intensity of the majority of auroral
forms allows it to yield more precise and complete information
about these aspects of auroral morphology than is
normally obtained through visual observation.Ye
Rolling contact fatigue life of chromium ion plated 440C bearing steel
Rolling contact fatigue (RCF) test specimens of heat treated 440C bearing steel were chromium ion plated in thicknesses from 0.1 to 8.0 micron and tested in RCF tester using 700 ksi maximum Hertzian stress. Heavy coatings, greater than about 5 micron in thickness, peeled off or spalled readily, whereas thin coatings, less than 3 micron thick, were tenacious and did not come off. Furthermore, significant improvement in RCF life was obtained with thin chromium ion plated test specimens. The average increase in B10 life was 75% compared with unplated 440C. These preliminary results indicate that ion plating is a promising way to improve bearing life
Specific Heat of Disordered He
Porous aerogel is a source of elastic scattering in superfluid 3He and
modifies the properties of the superfluid, suppressing the transition
temperature and order parameter. The specific heat jumps for the B-phase of
superfluid 3He in aerogel have been measured as a function of pressure and
interpreted using the homogeneous and inhomogeneous isotropic scattering
models. The specific heat jumps for other p-wave states are estimated for

A Killing tensor for higher dimensional Kerr-AdS black holes with NUT charge
In this paper, we study the recently discovered family of higher dimensional
Kerr-AdS black holes with an extra NUT-like parameter. We show that the inverse
metric is additively separable after multiplication by a simple function. This
allows us to separate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, showing that geodesic
motion is integrable on this background. The separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi
equation is intimately linked to the existence of an irreducible Killing
tensor, which provides an extra constant of motion. We also demonstrate that

Rotorcraft contingency power study
Twin helicopter engines are often sized by the power requirement of a safe mission completion after the failure of one of the two engines. This study was undertaken for NASA Lewis by General Electric Co. to evaluate the merits of special design features to provide a 2-1/2 Contingency Power rating, permitting an engine size reduction. The merits of water injection, turbine cooling airflow modulation, throttle push, and a propellant auxiliary power plant were evaluated using military Life Cycle Cost (LCC) and commercial helicopter Direct Operating Cost (DOC) merit factors in a rubber engine and a rubber aircraft scenario
Electron microscopic visualization of tRNA genes with ferritin-avidin: biotin labels
A method is described for indirect electron microscopic visualization and mapping of tRNA and other short transcripts hybridized to DNA. This method depends upon the attachment of the electron-dense protein ferritin to the RNA, the binding being mediated by the remarkably strong association of the egg white protein avidin with biotin. Biotin is covalently attached to the 3' end of tRNA using an NH2 (CH2) 5NH2 bridge. The tRNA-biotin adduct is hybridized to complementcrry DNA sequences present in a single stranded nonhomology loop of a DNA:DNA heteroduplex. Avidin, covalently crosslinked to ferritin is mixed with the heteroduplex and becomes bound to the hybridized tRNA-biotin. Observation of the DNA:RNA-biotin:avidin-ferritin complex by electron microsdopy specifically and accurately reveals the position of the tRNA gene, with a frequency of labeling of approximately 50%
Propositional Encoding of Constraints over Tree-Shaped Data
We present a functional programming language for specifying constraints over
tree-shaped data. The language allows for Haskell-like algebraic data types and
pattern matching. Our constraint compiler CO4 translates these programs into
satisfiability problems in propositional logic. We present an application from
the area of automated analysis of (non-)termination of rewrite systems
Electromagnetic field near cosmic string
The retarded Green function of the electromagnetic field in spacetime of a
straight thin cosmic string is found. It splits into a geodesic part
(corresponding to the propagation along null rays) and to the field scattered
on the string. With help of the Green function the electric and magnetic fields
of simple sources are constructed. It is shown that these sources are
influenced by the cosmic string through a self-interaction with their field.
The distant field of static sources is studied and it is found that it has a
different multipole structure than in Minkowski spacetime. On the other hand,
the string suppresses the electric and magnetic field of distant sources--the

How unprovable is Rabin's decidability theorem?
We study the strength of set-theoretic axioms needed to prove Rabin's theorem
on the decidability of the MSO theory of the infinite binary tree. We first
show that the complementation theorem for tree automata, which forms the
technical core of typical proofs of Rabin's theorem, is equivalent over the
moderately strong second-order arithmetic theory to a
determinacy principle implied by the positional determinacy of all parity games
and implying the determinacy of all Gale-Stewart games given by boolean
combinations of sets. It follows that complementation for
tree automata is provable from - but not -comprehension.
We then use results due to MedSalem-Tanaka, M\"ollerfeld and
Heinatsch-M\"ollerfeld to prove that over -comprehension, the
complementation theorem for tree automata, decidability of the MSO theory of
the infinite binary tree, positional determinacy of parity games and
determinacy of Gale-Stewart games are all
equivalent. Moreover, these statements are equivalent to the
-reflection principle for -comprehension. It follows in
particular that Rabin's decidability theorem is not provable in

A chemical sensor based on a photonic-crystal L3 nanocavity defined in a silicon-nitride membrane
The application of a silicon-nitride based L3 optical nanocavity as a chemical sensor is explored. It is shown that by adjusting the thickness of an ultra-thin Lumogen Red film deposited onto the nanocavity surface, the fundamental optical mode undergoes a progressive red-shift as the layer-thickness increases, with the cavity being able to detect the presence of a single molecular monolayer. The optical properties of a nanocavity whose surface is coated with a thin layer of a porphyrin-based polymer are also explored. On exposure of the cavity to an acidic-vapour, it is shown that changes in the optical properties of the porphyrin-film (thickness and refractive index) can be detected through a reversible shift in the cavity mode wavelength.
