On the suspension of graded sediment by waves above ripples: Inferences of convective and diffusive processes
The relationship between the grain size distribution of the sediment on the bed and that found in suspension due to wave action above ripples is assessed here using detailed, pumped sample, measurements obtained at full-scale and also at laboratory scale. The waves were regular and weakly asymmetrical in most tests, and irregular in a minority of tests. The beds comprised fine and medium sand and were rippled in all tests. The cycle-mean sediment concentrations (C) from the pumped samples were split into multiple grain size fractions and then represented by exponential C-profile shapes. The analysis of these profiles was carried out in two stages to determine: (i) the relationship between the size distribution of the sediment on the bed and that found in the reference concentration, and (ii) the behaviour of the exponential decay scale of the C-profiles. From this analysis inferences are made about the relative roles of diffusion and convection in the upward sediment flux linked to the process of vortex shedding from the ripple crests. The Transfer function (Tr) defined to relate the bed sediment size distribution to that of the reference concentration indicates that, while finer fractions are relatively easily entrained, the suspension of some coarser fractions is caused by an additional convective effect that supplements diffusion. The evidence for this becomes pronounced above steep ripples, and the Transfer function suggests further that irregular waves increase the occurrence of coarser fractions in suspension. A functional form for Tr is suggested incorporating these principles. The exponential decay scale LS arising from the fractional C-profiles is also examined to assess the mechanisms responsible for the upward transfer of grains and a parameterisation of LS related to ripple size is suggested. The separate findings for Tr and LS present supporting evidence of diffusion affecting the finer fractions in suspension and combined diffusion+convection affecting the coarser fractions. The methodology developed allows the vertical profile of suspended median grain size to be predicted given knowledge of both the bed grain size distribution and also the flow conditions
Stability estimates for resolvents, eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of elliptic operators on variable domains
We consider general second order uniformly elliptic operators subject to
homogeneous boundary conditions on open sets parametrized by
Lipschitz homeomorphisms defined on a fixed reference domain .
Given two open sets , we estimate the
variation of resolvents, eigenvalues and eigenfunctions via the Sobolev norm
for finite values of , under
natural summability conditions on eigenfunctions and their gradients. We prove
that such conditions are satisfied for a wide class of operators and open sets,
including open sets with Lipschitz continuous boundaries. We apply these
estimates to control the variation of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions via
the measure of the symmetric difference of the open sets. We also discuss an

Detection of elliptical shapes via cross-entropy clustering
The problem of finding elliptical shapes in an image will be considered. We
discuss the solution which uses cross-entropy clustering. The proposed method
allows the search for ellipses with predefined sizes and position in the space.
Moreover, it works well for search of ellipsoids in higher dimensions
Sharp two-sided heat kernel estimates for critical Schr\"odinger operators on bounded domains
On a smooth bounded domain \Omega \subset R^N we consider the Schr\"odinger
operators -\Delta -V, with V being either the critical borderline potential
V(x)=(N-2)^2/4 |x|^{-2} or V(x)=(1/4) dist (x,\partial\Omega)^{-2}, under
Dirichlet boundary conditions. In this work we obtain sharp two-sided estimates
on the corresponding heat kernels. To this end we transform the Scr\"odinger
operators into suitable degenerate operators, for which we prove a new
parabolic Harnack inequality up to the boundary. To derive the Harnack
inequality we have established a serier of new inequalities such as improved
Hardy, logarithmic Hardy Sobolev, Hardy-Moser and weighted Poincar\'e. As a
byproduct of our technique we are able to answer positively to a conjecture of

Aging, Environmental Influences, and Photocarcinogenesis
Repeated exposure of human skin to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) over a period of many years is responsible for the induction of most nonmelanoma skin cancers in man. The tumors are progressively more common in chronologically older people. Is this fact purely a function of adequate dose accumulation and development time, or is tumor expression influenced by “physiological age”? The answer to this question influences risk estimates of the results of atmosphere modification. Data from animal studies indicate that the tumor incidence is affected by dose-delivery factors and not just by the accumulated lifetime dose. In addition, young mice are more prone to tumor induction by a given UVR dose than are older animals. Because the quality and quantity of the stimulus (UVR) can be readily manipulated and accurately described, studies on photocarcinogenesis offer distinct possibilities for untangling some of the interactive variables in the aging process
Sticky stuff : redefining bedform prediction in modern and ancient environments
This work was funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) under the COHBED project (NE/1027223/1). Paterson was funded by the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS).The dimensions and dynamics of subaqueous bedforms are well known for cohesionless sediments. However, the effect of physical cohesion imparted by cohesive clay within mixed sand-mud substrates has not been examined, despite its recognized influence on sediment stability. Here we present a series of controlled laboratory experiments to establish the influence of substrate clay content on subaqueous bedform dynamics within mixtures of sand and clay exposed to unidirectional flow. The results show that bedform dimensions and steepness decrease linearly with clay content, and comparison with existing predictors of bedform dimensions, established within cohesionless sediments, reveals significant over-prediction of bedform size for all but the lowermost clay contents examined. The profound effect substrate clay content has on bedform dimensions has a number of important implications for interpretation in a range of modern and ancient environments, including reduced roughness and bedform heights in estuarine systems and the often cited lack of large dune cross-sets in turbidites. The results therefore offer a step change in our understanding of bedform formation and dynamics in these, and many other, sedimentary environments.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
The celebrity entrepreneur on television: profile, politics and power
This article examines the rise of the ‘celebrity entrepreneur’ on television through the emergence of the ‘business entertainment format’ and considers the ways in which regular television exposure can be converted into political influence. Within television studies there has been a preoccupation in recent years with how lifestyle and reality formats work to transform ‘ordinary’ people into celebrities. As a result, the contribution of vocationally skilled business professionals to factual entertainment programming has gone almost unnoticed. This article draws on interviews with key media industry professionals and begins by looking at the construction of entrepreneurs as different types of television personalities and how discourses of work, skill and knowledge function in business shows. It then outlines how entrepreneurs can utilize their newly acquired televisual skills to cultivate a wider media profile and secure various forms of political access and influence. Integral to this is the centrality of public relations and media management agencies in shaping media discourses and developing the individual as a ‘brand identity’ that can be used to endorse a range of products or ideas. This has led to policy makers and politicians attempting to mobilize the media profile of celebrity entrepreneurs to reach out and connect with the public on business and enterprise-related issues
Characterization of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec elements from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius infections in Australian animals
We examined the oxacillin resistance phenotype and genomic structure of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) elements from 77 veterinary methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) isolates. Isolates were characterized by oxacillin broth microdilution, whole-genome sequencing, and bioformatics analysis. Five previously described SCCmec elements, and a sixth novel element, were identified: SCCmec III (also known as II-III), ΨSCCmec57395, and SCCmecNA45 (a SCCmec VII variant), all previously described in MRSP, and SCCmec IVg and SCCmec VT, previously described in both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and MRSP. The sixth element was novel and found among nine geographically clustered isolates. This novel pseudostaphylococcal cassette chromosome (ΨSCCmecKW21) contained a class A mec gene complex but lacked ccr genes. It also harbored heavy metal (cadmium) resistance determinants. The median oxacillin MIC values among ΨSCCmecKW21, SCCmec III, and SCCmec VT isolates were significantly higher than those determined for the SCCmecNA45 VII variant isolates and ΨSCCmec57395 and SCCmec IVg isolates. ΨSCCmecKW21 was found exclusively in sequence type 497 (ST497), an MRSP clone that is locally successful in Victoria, Australia. Future studies are necessary to determine if this clone has disseminated further afield and if ΨSCCmecKW21 has moved into other MRSP lineages or staphylococcal species. IMPORTANCE Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a significant veterinary pathogen and occasional cause of infections in humans. β-Lactams are an important group of antimicrobials used to treat staphylococcal infections in humans and animals. However, when staphylococci become methicillin resistant via the acquisition of a mobile genetic element called staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec), they become resistant to all β-lactams. This study detected a novel SCCmec element among a cluster of methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius isolates from animals in Australia. It also detected SCCmec elements in S. pseudintermedius that had high similarity to those identified in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, demonstrating how human and animal pathogens can share the same resistance determinants
Randomized controlled trial of intraoperative goal-directed fluid therapy in aerobically fit and unfit patients having major colorectal surgery.
BACKGROUND: Intraoperative fluid therapy regimens using oesophageal Doppler monitoring (ODM) to optimize stroke volume (SV) (goal-directed fluid therapy, GDT) have been associated with a reduction in length of stay (LOS) and complication rates after major surgery. We hypothesized that intraoperative GDT would reduce the time to surgical readiness for discharge (RfD) of patients having major elective colorectal surgery but that this effect might be less marked in aerobically fit patients. METHODS: In this double-blinded controlled trial, 179 patients undergoing major open or laparoscopic colorectal surgery were characterized as aerobically 'fit' (n=123) or 'unfit' (n=56) on the basis of their performance during a cardiopulmonary exercise test. Within these fitness strata, patients were randomized to receive a standard fluid regimen with or without ODM-guided intraoperative GDT. RESULTS: GDT patients received an average of 1360 ml of additional intraoperative colloid. The mean cardiac index and SV at skin closure were significantly higher in the GDT group than in controls. Times to RfD and LOS were longer in GDT than control patients but did not reach statistical significance (median 6.8 vs 4.9 days, P=0.09, and median 8.8 vs 6.7 days, P=0.09, respectively). Fit GDT patients had an increased RfD (median 7.0 vs 4.7 days; P=0.01) and LOS (median 8.8 vs 6.0 days; P=0.01) compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS: Intraoperative SV optimization conferred no additional benefit over standard fluid therapy. In an aerobically fit subgroup of patients, GDT was associated with detrimental effects on the primary outcome. Dynamics of nodal points and the nodal count on a family of quantum graphs
We investigate the properties of the zeros of the eigenfunctions on quantum
graphs (metric graphs with a Schr\"odinger-type differential operator). Using
tools such as scattering approach and eigenvalue interlacing inequalities we
derive several formulas relating the number of the zeros of the n-th
eigenfunction to the spectrum of the graph and of some of its subgraphs. In a
special case of the so-called dihedral graph we prove an explicit formula that
only uses the lengths of the edges, entirely bypassing the information about
the graph's eigenvalues. The results are explained from the point of view of
the dynamics of zeros of the solutions to the scattering problem.Comment: 34 pages, 12 figure
