John Rawls' 'A Theory of Justice'
Some people are multi-billionaires; others die because they are too poor to afford food or medications. In many countries, people are denied rights to free speech, to participate in political life, or to pursue a career, because of their gender, religion, race or other factors, while their fellow citizens enjoy these rights. In many societies, what best predicts your future income, or whether you will attend college, is your parents’ income.
To many, these facts seem unjust. Others disagree: even if these facts are regrettable, they aren’t issues of justice. A successful theory of justice must explain why clear injustices are unjust and help us resolve current disputes.
John Rawls (1921-2002) was a Harvard philosopher best known for his A Theory of Justice (1971), which attempted to define a just society. Nearly every contemporary scholarly discussion of justice references A Theory of Justice. This essay reviews its main themes
A versatile force: the future of Australia's special operations capability
This study aims to provide an understanding of the Australian Defence Force\u27s special operations capability and what it offers to government in both peace and wartime.
Summary
Over the past decade, the demands of the ADF’s global and regional operations saw an unprecedented growth in Australia’s special operations capability. Indeed, Special Operations Forces became the ‘capability of choice’ for the Australian Government. However, as the ADF enters a period of transition from almost constant high-tempo operations to what might be a ‘soft power decade’, there’s a need to consider the future of the capability.
Against this background, this study aims to inform policy decisions by providing an understanding of the special operations capability and what it offers to government in both peace and wartime. It argues against possible temptations to cut the capability. In a changing strategic environment, Special Operations Forces will continue to be an important instrument of Australian defence policy. The study entails a number of concrete policy recommendations to strengthen and readjust the special operations capability for a new era

Is an alliance conceived as a bulwark against a resurgence of Japanese militarism and which cut its military and intelligence teeth in the Cold War is still relevant to today’s strategic concerns?
Overview
The alliance between Australia and the US, underpinned by the formal ANZUS Treaty of 1951, continues to be a central part of Australian defence and security thinking and an instrument of American policy in the Asia–Pacific.
How is it that an alliance conceived as a bulwark against a resurgence of Japanese militarism and which cut its military and intelligence teeth in the Cold War is still relevant to today’s strategic concerns? The answer is partly—and importantly—that the core values of the ANZUS members are strongly aligned, and successive Australian governments and American presidential administrations have seen great value in working with like-minded partners to ensure Asia–Pacific security. Far from becoming a historical curiosity, today it’s not just relevant, but of greater importance than has been the case in the past few decades.
To explore new ideas on how to strengthen the US–Australia alliance, ASPI conducted a high-level strategic dialogue in Honolulu in July this year. Discussions canvassed the future strategic environment; the forthcoming Australian Defence White Paper; budget, sovereignty and expectation risks; and cooperation in the maritime, land, air, cyber, space and intelligence domains.
A key purpose of the Honolulu dialogue was to help ASPI develop policy recommendations on the alliance relationship for government. This report is the product of those discussions
St(D)reaming Resolution: Crowd-Based Stepped Online Dispute Resolution for Professional Gamers, VTubers & Streamers
This paper proposes and creates a novel method to resolve disputes between content creators, Vtubers, Professional Gamers, and streamers by utilizing a crowd based stepped dispute resolution system upheld and voted on by viewers, shareholders, and the streaming company: Twitch or YouTube. To reach this goal, the proposal will include comparisons to the current dispute resolution system used by Twitch and YouTube; a proposed online dispute resolution system; diagrams of the proposal; key performance indexes (KPI’s); utilization of arbitral analytics with artificial intelligence to create a fair and balanced resolution system; and some predictions on the future of the industry with these changes in mind

Multi-Scale Films Inspired by Bone
The mechanical properties of bone, specifically the combination of strength and toughness, when adjusted for the mechanical properties of its constituent materials exceeds the performance of synthetic materials [1]. Synthetic materials suffer from a trade-off between strength and toughness called the “rule of mixtures”. Although the absolute strength and toughness of synthetic materials still exceed that of bone, the possibility of producing synthetic materials that match bone’s proportional improvement in strength and toughness remains tantalizing. In this thesis we take a step towards developing synthetic materials that replicate the mechanical performance of bone by mimicking the nano and microstructure of bone. We, for the first time, outline a theoretical framework to explain the mechanisms by which the exceptional strength of the nano-scale building blocks of bone are transferred to the macro-scale using the concept of phonon localization. In the second part of this thesis we synthesize using a scalable method, for the first time, films that have a multi-scale structure similar to bone. Enhancing fuel cell lifetime performance through effective health management
Hydrogen fuel cells, and notably the polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), present an important opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within a range of sectors of society, particularly for transportation and portable products. Despite several decades of research and development, there exist three main hurdles to full commercialisation; namely infrastructure, costs, and durability.
This thesis considers the latter of these.
The lifetime target for an automotive fuel cell power plant is to survive 5000 hours of usage before significant performance loss; current demonstration projects have only accomplished half of this target, often due to PEFC stack component degradation. Health management techniques have been identified as an opportunity to overcome the durability limitations. By monitoring the PEFC for faulty operation, it is hoped that control actions can be made to restore or maintain performance, and achieve the desired lifetime durability.
This thesis presents fault detection and diagnosis approaches with the goal of isolating a range of component degradation modes from within the PEFC construction. Fault detection is achieved through residual analysis against an electrochemical model of healthy stack condition. An expert knowledge-based diagnostic approach is developed for fault isolation. This analysis is enabled through fuzzy logic calculations, which allows for computational reasoning against linguistic terminology and expert understanding of degradation phenomena.
An experimental test bench has been utilised to test the health management processes, and demonstrate functionality. Through different steady-state and dynamic loading conditions, including a simulation of automotive application, diagnosis results can be observed for PEFC degradation cases.
This research contributes to the areas of reliability analysis and health management of PEFC fuel cells. Established PEFC models have been updated to represent more accurately an application PEFC. The fuzzy logic knowledge-based diagnostic is the greatest novel contribution, with no examples of this application in the literature
