Storing images in warm atomic vapor
Reversible and coherent storage of light in atomic medium is a key-stone of
future quantum information applications. In this work, arbitrary
two-dimensional images are slowed and stored in warm atomic vapor for up to 30
s, utilizing electromagnetically induced transparency. Both the intensity
and the phase patterns of the optical field are maintained. The main limitation
on the storage resolution and duration is found to be the diffusion of atoms. A
techniqueanalogous to phase-shift lithography is employed to diminish the
effect of diffusion on the visibility of the reconstructed image
Embedded motivational interviewing combined with a smartphone app to increase physical activity in people with sub-acute low back pain: study protocol of a cluster randomised control trial
Background: Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based, client-centred counselling technique that has been used effectively to increase physical activity, including for people with low back pain. One barrier to implementing Motivational Interviewing in health care settings more broadly is the extra treatment time with therapists. The aim of this paper is to describe the design of a cluster randomised controlled trial evaluating the effect of an intervention that pairs Motivational Interviewing embedded into usual physiotherapy care with a specifically designed app to increase physical activity in people with sub-acute low back pain. Methods: The study is a cluster randomised controlled in which patients aged over 18 years who have sub-acute low back pain (3–12 weeks duration) are recruited from four public hospital outpatient clinics. Based on the recruitment site, participants either receive usual physiotherapy care or the Motivational Interviewing intervention over 6 consecutive weekly outpatient sessions with a specifically designed app designed to facilitate participant-led physical activity behaviour change in between sessions. Outcome measures assessed at baseline and 7 weeks are: physical activity as measured by accelerometer (primary outcome), and pain-related activity restriction and pain self-efficacy (secondary outcomes). Postintervention interviews with physiotherapists and participants will be conducted as part of a process evaluation. Discussion: This intervention, which comprises trained physiotherapists conducting conversations about increasing physical activity with their patients in a manner consistent with Motivational Interviewing as part of usual care combined with a specifically designed app, has potential to facilitate behaviour change with minimal extra therapist time
The baboon endogenous virus genome. II. Provirus sequence variations in baboon cell DNA
Restriction analysis of the approximately 100 integrated baboon endogenous virus (BaEV) proviruses in baboon cells and tissues has revealed two major sequence variations, both in the gag gene region of the genome. One, a 150 nucleotide pair insert, is present in a small proportion of the proviral DNAs of some baboons, but is present in the majority of the proviral DNAs of other baboons. The second, a Bam HI recognition sequence located 2.25 kb from the proviral 5' end, is missing or modified in approximately one-half of the integrated genomes. We consider the possibility that accumulation of proviruses not containing the 0.15 kb insert is correlated with viral activation and expression since it is this form that is a replication intermediate in freshly infected permissive cells. It is evident from these initial studies that the organization of the multiple BaEV proviruses in baboon DNA has undergone modification during evolution
Measurement of Dicke Narrowing in Electromagnetically Induced Transparency
Dicke narrowing is a phenomena that dramatically reduces the Doppler width of
spectral lines, due to frequent velocity-changing collisions. A similar
phenomena occurs for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances,
and facilitates ultra-narrow spectral features in room-temperature vapor. We
directly measure the Dicke-like narrowing by studying EIT line-shapes as a
function of the angle between the pump and the probe beams. The measurements
are in good agreement with an analytic theory with no fit parameters. The
results show that Dicke narrowing can increase substantially the tolerance of
hot-vapor EIT to angular deviations. We demonstrate the importance of this
effect for applications such as imaging and spatial solitons using a
single-shot imaging experiment, and discuss the implications on the feasibility
of storing images in atomic vapor.Comment: Introduction revise
A predictive formulation of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model
A novel strategy to handle divergences typical of perturbative calculations
is implemented for the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model and its phenomenological
consequences investigated. The central idea of the method is to avoid the
critical step involved in the regularization process, namely the explicit
evaluation of divergent integrals. This goal is achieved by assuming a
regularization distribution in an implicit way and making use, in intermediary
steps, only of very general properties of such regularization. The finite parts
are separated of the divergent ones and integrated free from effects of the
regularization. The divergent parts are organized in terms of standard objects
which are independent of the (arbitrary) momenta running in internal lines of
loop graphs. Through the analysis of symmetry relations, a set of properties
for the divergent objects are identified, which we denominate consistency
relations, reducing the number of divergent objects to only a few ones. The
calculational strategy eliminates unphysical dependencies of the arbitrary
choices for the routing of internal momenta, leading to ambiguity-free, and
symmetry-preserving physical amplitudes. We show that the imposition of scale
properties for the basic divergent objects leads to a critical condition for
the constituent quark mass such that the remaining arbitrariness is removed.
The model become predictive in the sense that its phenomenological consequences
do not depend on possible choices made in intermediary steps. Numerical results
are obtained for physical quantities at the one-loop level for the pion and
