We compute the critical exponents of d=1d = 1 string theory to leading order, using the renormalization group approach recently suggested by Br\'{e}zin and Zinn-Justin.Comment: 8 pages, Latex, CERN-TH-6546/9

Approximate Bayesian computation scheme for parameter inference and model selection in dynamical systems

Approximate Bayesian computation methods can be used to evaluate posterior distributions without having to calculate likelihoods. In this paper we discuss and apply an approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) method based on sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) to estimate parameters of dynamical models. We show that ABC SMC gives information about the inferability of parameters and model sensitivity to changes in parameters, and tends to perform better than other ABC approaches. The algorithm is applied to several well known biological systems, for which parameters and their credible intervals are inferred. Moreover, we develop ABC SMC as a tool for model selection; given a range of different mathematical descriptions, ABC SMC is able to choose the best model using the standard Bayesian model selection apparatus.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figure

Annulus Amplitudes and ZZ Branes in Minimal String Theory

We study the annulus amplitudes of (p,q) minimal string theory. Focusing on the ZZ-FZZT annulus amplitude as a target-space probe of the ZZ brane, we use it to confirm that the ZZ branes are localized in the strong-coupling region. Along the way we learn that the ZZ-FZZT open strings are fermions, even though our theory is bosonic! We also provide a geometrical interpretation of the annulus amplitudes in terms of the Riemann surface M_{p,q} that emerges from the FZZT branes. The ZZ-FZZT annulus amplitude measures the deformation of M_{p,q} due to the presence of background ZZ branes; each kind of ZZ-brane deforms only one A-period of the surface. Finally, we use the annulus amplitudes to argue that the ZZ branes can be regarded as "wrong-branch" tachyons which violate the bound \alpha<Q/2.Comment: 33 pages, new results in appendix, minor change

The role of dugong and turtle grazing in Torres Strait seagrass declines: Exclusion experiments show the role of green turtle and dugong grazing in structuring Torres Strait seagrass meadows

    • Seagrass declines in western Torres Strait that occurred in 2019 and 2020 have been recognised as a concern by the local community. Grazing by dugongs and green turtles was identified as a possible cause of these declines. • Exclusion cages were used at two of the affected seagrass meadows (Orman Reefs and Mabuyag Island) to understand how herbivory by green turtles and dugongs (megaherbivores) was impacting seagrass meadows. • Where grazing pressure was removed (inside exclusion cages) the seagrass canopy height and biomass were significantly higher than the open to grazing control plots at both locations by the end of the seven-month experiment. • Grazing pressure is very high at both sites and herbivory is likely to be contributing to the seagrass declines in these meadows. This seems to be driven principally by green turtle grazing. • Based on the declines recorded in the long-term monitoring program at these meadows and the results from this study, it seems likely that megaherbivore grazing may have been a key driver of the declines at the Orman Reefs site, and grazing pressure is continuing to lead to reduced seagrass abundance at both sites. • Studying megaherbivore movements and the changing spatial status of seagrass across the broader region would increase understanding of the dynamics of these plant-animal interactions in the region. This would also help to establish whether grazing is the sole cause of declines at these sites, or part of natural cycles linked to other drivers such as wind, sediment movements or other impacts to seagrasses • This study confirms megaherbivore grazing is a key element in shaping seagrass dynamics in Torres Strait and points to the value of further assessments of megaherbivore and seagrass dynamics in northern Australia

    Hydrolases in GtoPdb v.2023.1

    Get PDF
Listed in this section are hydrolases not accumulated in other parts of the Concise Guide, such as monoacylglycerol lipase and acetylcholinesterase. Pancreatic lipase is the predominant mechanism of fat digestion in the alimentary system; its inhibition is associated with decreased fat absorption. CES1 is present at lower levels in the gut than CES2 (P23141), but predominates in the liver, where it is responsible for the hydrolysis of many aliphatic, aromatic and steroid esters. Hormone-sensitive lipase is also a relatively non-selective esterase associated with steroid ester hydrolysis and triglyceride metabolism, particularly in adipose tissue. Endothelial lipase is secreted from endothelial cells and regulates circulating cholesterol in high density lipoproteins

    Supersymmetry on a Spatial Lattice

We construct a variety of supersymmetric gauge theories on a spatial lattice, including N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in 3+1 dimensions. Exact lattice supersymmetry greatly reduces or eliminates the need for fine tuning to arrive at the desired continuum limit in these examples.Comment: Version 3: Text brought in line with published version (extended discussion of orbifolding

Open/Closed String Duality for Topological Gravity with Matter

The exact FZZT brane partition function for topological gravity with matter is computed using the dual two-matrix model. We show how the effective theory of open strings on a stack of FZZT branes is described by the generalized Kontsevich matrix integral, extending the earlier result for pure topological gravity. Using the well-known relation between the Kontsevich integral and a certain shift in the closed-string background, we conclude that these models exhibit open/closed string duality explicitly. Just as in pure topological gravity, the unphysical sheets of the classical FZZT moduli space are eliminated in the exact answer. Instead, they contribute small, nonperturbative corrections to the exact answer through Stokes' phenomenon.Comment: 23 pages, 1 figure, harvma

Corrigendum to "Complex Systems and International Governance"

    Get PDF
This collection of essays brings together scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds, based on three continents, with different theoretical and methodological interests but all active on the topic of complex systems as applied to international relations. They investigate how complex systems have been and can be applied in practice and what differences it makes for the study of international affairs. Two important threads link all the contributions: (i) To which extent is this approach promising to understand global governance dynamics? (ii) How can this be implemented in practice
