The impact of a multi-strategy academic writing handbook on Emergent bilinguals’ cross-curricular writing competences
the Revolucionary Council (1976-1982)
UID/CPO/04627/2013
SFRH/BPD/75787/2011The Portuguese revolutionary process has been studied and analyzed both by historians and politicalscientists. Less attention has been paid to the long process of consolidation of the democratic regime, also crossed by contradictions and tensions. After two turbulent years the country began a process ofconsolidation of the democratic institutions. However, the role played by the military in the fall of the previous dictatorial regime and the fragility of the new democratic institutions, did not allow their immediate withdrawal from political life. The President of the Republic was a military and the political parties hadagreed to maintain an unelected sovereign body: the Revolutionary Council. This paper presents some elements that help to understand the success of democratic consolidation in Portugal, revealing in particular that this process should not be interpreted as confrontation between democratic civilian parties and the military and that the subordination to the civil power can also be encouraged by the military itself.publishersversionpublishe
In the theory of passions of Thomas Hobbes there is a group of simple passions that are used to explain the rest: pleasure-pain, appetite-aversion, love- hate and joy-sadness. We try to show that, if we consider the materialistic, mechanistic and physiological explanation that Hobbes gives of human nature, the couple pleasure and pain is the most important. This is an interesting theory because it contradicts the view commonly held by the interpreters of Hobbes’s thought and because it opens the door to an hedonist anthropology that would change the vision of his ethics and his political theory
Algunas Notas sobre Domingo de Soto y la Prehistoria del Estado de Naturaleza Hobbesiano || Some notes about Domingo de Soto and the prehistory of Hobbe’s state of nature
The aim of this brief work is to show some relations that can be drawn between the political theories of the Spanish theologian Domingo de Soto and the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes. In fact, what we want to prove is that Soto’s concept of dominion and his opinions about the state of man after the fall have some presence in the state of nature that Hobbes uses to demonstrate the necessity of the State.
The present work tries to analyze the title-pages of the first three editions of Thomas Hobbes’s De Cive: the first Latin version printed in Paris in 1642, the second Latin edition of 1647 published in Amsterdam and the English translation that appeared in London in 1651 with the title of Philosophical Rudiments Concerning Government and Society. In doing this we want to determine if Hobbes cooperated in the design of these illustrations just as he did with the one contained in his main work: the Leviathan.
A comparative study of the characteristics and physical behaviour of different packing materials commonly used in biofiltration
In this study, the characteristics and physical behaviour of 8 different packing materials were compared. The materials were selected according to previous works in the field of biofiltration including organic and inorganic or synthetic materials. Results pre-selected those more acceptable support materials for the main function they have to perform in the biological system: high surface
contact, rugosity to immobilize the biomass, low pressure drop, nutrients supply, water retentivity or a commitment among them. Otherwise, pressure drop have been described by means of the respective mathematic expressions in order to include phenomena in the classical biofiltration models.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Conversion of chemical scrubbers to biotrickling filters for VOCs and H2S treatment at low contact times
The purpose of this work was to evaluate the technical and economical feasibility of converting three chemical scrubbers in series to biotrickling filters (BTFs) for the simultaneous removal of H2S and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The conversion of the full-scale scrubbers was based on previous conversion protocols. Conversion mainly required replacing the original carrier material and recycle pumps as well as modifying the controls and operation of the reactors. Complete removal of H2S and VOCs on a routine basis was reached at neutral pH in a longer period of time compared to previous conversions reported. Biotrickling filters operated at a gas contact time of about 1.4 s per reactor and at pH controlled between 6.5 and 6.8. Inlet average concentrations below 10 ppmv of H2S and below 5 ppmv for VOCs were often completely removed. The first and second bioreactors played a primary role in H2S removal. Year-round operation of the biotrickling filters proved the ability of the system to handle progressive load increases of H2S and VOCs. However, fast, sudden load changes often lead to reduced removal efficiencies. Odor analyses showed average removal efficiencies above 80 %. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of selected samples showed that outlet odor concentration was due to limited removal of VOCs. The conversion showed was economically viable taking into account the theoretical consumption of chemicals needed for the absorption and oxidation of both H2S and VOCs.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Exploring the link between corruption and state capacity: a case study of brazilian municipalities
Treballs Finals del Master en Institucions i Economia Política. Facultat d'Economia i Empresa. Universitat de Barcelona. Curs 2022-2022. Tutora: Pilar Sorribas-NavarroThis master thesis aims to investigate the causal effect of corruption on state capacity. While
the diversity of theories of the causes and implications of corruption has grown as a result of
the increased availability of data, there is a surprising lack of studies attempting to identify the
causal effect that corruption has on state capacity. Building on previous literature, this paper
employs the difference in differences and event study methods to explain how a case study of
a top-down anti-corruption program could allow for a causal analysis of the effects of a drop
in corruption on future state capacity, using data from over 250 Brazilian municipalities over
9 years from 2002 to 2010. The findings suggest that a drop in corruption can actively allow
for the development of state capacity through several means. With state capacity being a key
part of economic development, and capacity building being a core pillar of the United Nation’s
Sustainable Development Goals, the findings could facilitate better-informed policy-making that
could have a greater and more holistic impact on developing nations
