Quantum robustness and phase transitions of the 3D Toric Code in a field
We study the robustness of 3D intrinsic topogical order under external perturbations by investigating the paradigmatic microscopic model, the 3D toric code in an external magnetic field. Exact dualities as well as variational calculations reveal a ground-state phase diagram with first and second-order quantum phase transitions. The variational approach can be applied without further approximations only for certain field directions. In the general field case, an approximative scheme based on an expansion of the variational energy in orders of the variational parameters is developed. For the breakdown of the 3D intrinsic topological order, it is found that the (im-)mobility of the quasiparticle excitations is crucial in contrast to their fractional statistics
Microbial Biosafety of Pilot-scale Bioreactor Treating MTBE and TBA-contaminated Drinking Water Supply
A pilot-scale sand-based fluidized bed bioreactor (FBBR) was utilized to treat both methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) from a contaminated aquifer. To evaluate the potential for re-use of the treated water, we tested for a panel of water quality indicator microorganisms and potential waterborne pathogens including total coliforms, Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Shigella spp., Campylobacter jejuni, Aeromonas hydrophila, Legionella pneumophila, Vibrio cholerae, Yersinia enterocolytica and Mycobacterium avium in both influent and treated waters from the bioreactor. Total bacteria decreased during FBBR treatment. E. coli, Salmonella and Shigella spp., C. jejuni, V. cholerae, Y. enterocolytica and M. avium were not detected in aquifer water or bioreactor treated water samples. For those pathogens detected, including total coliforms, L. pneumophila and A. hydrophila, numbers were usually lower in treated water than influent samples, suggesting removal during treatment. The detection of particular bacterial species reflected their presence or absence in the influent waters
Agglomeration mechanism during the preparation of nickel(0) and iron(0) zeolites
Magnetization measurements have been used to study the reduction process of Ni - zeolites and the thermal decomposition of
iron pentacarbonyl adsorbed on NaY zeolites . The Ni(0) particle size distribution in H2»reduced NiNaA, Ni NaX, Ni NaY and
NiNaM is bidisperse. The amount and the volume of particles
exceeding the cage dimensions increases in the sequence Μ,Υ,Χ,Α
zeolites. Particle fusion is found to be the rate determining
step. With decomposition of Fe(C0)5/NaY adducts, up to 97 wt.%
of the iron particles produced are smaller than 1.3 nm. Fluidized
sample bed, inert gas atmosphere and fast heating up to
440 Κ are essential to reach mononodal dispersion
Correctness of an STM Haskell implementation
A concurrent implementation of software transactional memory in Concurrent Haskell using a call-by-need functional language with processes and futures is given. The description of the small-step operational semantics is precise and explicit, and employs an early abort of conflicting transactions. A proof of correctness of the implementation is given for a contextual semantics with may- and should-convergence. This implies that our implementation is a correct evaluator for an abstract specification equipped with a big-step semantics
Unitarisation of EFT Amplitudes for Dark Matter Searches at the LHC
We propose a new approach to the LHC dark matter search analysis within the
effective field theory (EFT) framework by utilising the K-matrix unitarisation
formalism. This approach provides a reasonable estimate of the dark matter
production cross section at high energies, and hence allows reliable bounds to
be placed on the cut-off scale of relevant operators without running into the
problem of perturbative unitarity violation. We exemplify this procedure for
the effective operator D5 in monojet dark matter searches in the collinear
approximation. We compare our bounds to those obtained using the truncation
method and identify a parameter region where the unitarisation prescription
leads to more stringent bounds.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures. References added and minor corrections made to
