Web technology, therefore, must not discriminate between the scribbled draft and the polished performance, between commercial and academic information, or among cultures, languages, media and so on.     Information Retrieval Techniques Used by the Midnapore College (Autonomous) Library Users: A Study

    Paper aims to present the results of a survey conducted to determine the information retrieval techniques used by the teachers and students of Midnapore College library, India as a result of the questionnaire-based survey conducted at the library. Out of 100 samples of the questionnaire distributed 93 completed and received for analysis. Study reveals that a significant number of users search information regarding the library material through OPAC despite encountering problems. Lack of basic skills among users was found to be the major reason for not utilizing full features of OPAC and the other reasons are improper query formulation and non use of search operators while surf the web. It is suggested that library should organize quality instruction programmes to improve knowledge and skills of the users

    Growth and physical property study of single nanowire (diameter ~ 45nm) of half doped Manganite

    We report here the growth and characterization of functional oxide nanowire of hole doped manganite of La0.5Sr0.5MnO3 (LSMO). We also report four probe electrical resistance measurement of single nanowire of LSMO (diameter ~ 45nm) using FIB fabricated electrodes. The wires were fabricated by hydrothermal method using autoclave at a temperature of 270 oC. The elemental analysis and physical property like electrical resistivity were studied at individual nanowire level. The quantitative determination of Mn valency and elemental mapping of constituent elements was done by using Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) in the Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) mode. We addressed the important issue of whether as a result of size reduction the nanowires can retain the desired composition, structure and physical properties. The nanowires used were found to have a ferromagnetic transition (TC) at around 325 K which is very close to the bulk value of around 330 K found in single crystal of the same composition confirming that the functional behavior is likely to be retained even after size reduction of the nanowires to a diameter of 45 nm. The electrical resistivity shows insulating behavior within the temperature range measured, which is very much similar to the bulk system.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted in Journal of Nanomaterial

    Effect of spinal mobilization with leg movement as an adjunct to neural mobilization and conventional therapy in patients with lumbar radiculopathy: Randomized controlled trial

    Background: In lumbar radiculopathy there is compression or inflammation of a spinal nerve and it may be accompanied by numbness and tingling, muscle weakness or loss of spinal reflexes in one or both lower limbs. Conventional physiotherapy which includes back extension exercises has varying degree of success in pain and functional outcome in lumbar radiculopathy. Mulligan's spinal mobilization with limb movement (SMWLM) and Shacklock's neural tissue mobilization are few of the techniques employed in the management of lumbar radiculopathy. The purpose of the study was to find out whether spinal mobilization with leg movement as an adjunct to neural mobilization and conventional therapy could bring better outcome in patients when compared to conventional therapy or neural mobilization and conventional therapy. Methods: 90 patients were selected randomly with lumbar radiculopathy. Duration of the study was for six weeks. The study included 3 groups, control group received back extension exercises and hot pack, experimental group 1 received neural mobilisation and conventional physiotherapy and experimental group 2 received SMWLM along with neural mobilisation and conventional physiotherapy. The outcomes included NPRS, SLR using goniometry and MOLBPQ which were assessed at day 1 and 2, 4, 6 week. ANOVA was done for inter group analysis and paired t-test was done for intra group analysis. Results: All the groups showed significant difference (P -0.000 < 0.05) at 2, 4, 6 weeks of NPRS, MOLBPQ and SLR. The mean difference and paired t-test values of experimental group 2 was more when compared to experimental group 1 and control group at the end of 6 weeks. Conclusion: All the three groups showed improvement in pain, functional disability and straight leg raise (SLR). SMWLM as an adjunct to neural mobilization and conventional therapy showed significantly better outcomes in pain, functional disability and SLR when compared to conventional therapy or neural mobilization and conventional therapy

    Evaluation the results of surgical management of traumatic paraplegia in traumatic thoracolumbar fractures

    Background: Thoracolumbar spine fractures are common injuries that can result in significant disability, deformity and neurological deficit. Aim of this study was to evaluate the results of surgical management of traumatic paraplegia, complete or incomplete as classified by Frankel scoring.Methods: A prospective study was conducted in patients attending outdoor and emergency department of Orthopedics of a tertiary care teaching institute in Kolkata, West Bengal with traumatic paraplegia involving the dorsolumbar spine. The important objectives are the time for recovery of various functions like sensory, motor and bowel and bladder function, comparison between early and late decompression, results of posterolateral fusion and time taken for solid bony fusion after operation. Total 46 cases were selected within a minimum of 6-month post-operative follow-up of which 4 cases lost in follow-up. Data collected from patient records included age, sex, time from injury to hospitalization, initial neurological status as per Frankel Score, MRI findings, surgery performed, postoperative course and neurological status at the time of discharge and latest follow up. Patients lost to follow up were not studied for outcome analysis.Results: When decompression done within 1st week in incomplete paraplegia, 80% of the patients showed return of grade 3 power. In complete paraplegia cases, 11% of the patients had return of power up to grade 3 when decompression done within 1 week, where no cases showed return of grade 3 power when decompression done after 2nd or 3rd week.Conclusions: After recovery from spinal shock, the earlier the surgical compression done, the better the neurological and bowel/bladder function recovery both in complete and incomplete paraplegic cases. Reduction is better and easy and less time consuming in early decompression than in late. Motor recovery can continue for over 6 months after decompression

    Association between severity of chronic liver disease with grading of oesophageal varices in children

    Chronic liver disease is a uncommon manifestation in the children and many of them presents with oesophageal varices. The aim of this study was to observe the association between severity of chronic liver diseases determined by Child- Pugh score with grading of oesophageal varices. 62 cases (male, 34) were included in the present study. Mean age of the study population was 9.5±3.3 years. Male to female ratio was 1.2:1. Wilson’s disease was the most common etiology of chronic liver disease (64.5%). Of the 62 children, 30.7% had Child class A, 16.1% had Child class B and the remaining 53.2% had Child class C cirrhosis. Oesophageal varices were found in 43 (69.3%) children. On univariate ananlysis low platelet count and splenomegaly were found to be associated with the presence of esophageal varices. Splenomegaly was found as independent predictor for presence of varices on multivariate analysis (OR; 15.51, 95% CI, 3.7-63.5). Furthermore, splenomegaly was also independent risk factor for large esophageal varices. No association was found between Child-Pugh classification (child A, B, C) with grading of oesophageal varices (Grade - I, II, III, IV). Our study showed no positive association between Child-Pugh classifications with grading of esophageal varices. Splenomegaly predicts the presence of oesophageal varices as well as the presence of large esophageal varices. BSMMU J 2022; 15(1): 29-3
