Distributed Matrix-Vector Multiplication: A Convolutional Coding Approach

    Get PDF
Distributed computing systems are well-known to suffer from the problem of slow or failed nodes; these are referred to as stragglers. Straggler mitigation (for distributed matrix computations) has recently been investigated from the standpoint of erasure coding in several works. In this work we present a strategy for distributed matrix-vector multiplication based on convolutional coding. Our scheme can be decoded using a low-complexity peeling decoder. The recovery process enjoys excellent numerical stability as compared to Reed-Solomon coding based approaches (which exhibit significant problems owing their badly conditioned decoding matrices). Finally, our schemes are better matched to the practically important case of sparse matrix-vector multiplication as compared to many previous schemes. Extensive simulation results corroborate our findings

Teaching of English in British India

In Indian Sub-Continent English was first introduced by the East India Company just as a mere medium of communication  between  some errand Indian boys and the East India Company. Then English missionaries taught English to the natives to enable them to read the Christian scripts. To meet the administrative requirements  the British government established English schools,  madrashas, colleges and universities in different parts of India to spread English among the natives for creating an English knowing class. The Indian natives became eager to pick up English  to  gain  economic  affluence and high social status both from the natives and the British government. Thus the seeds of English were sown in British India and it has   flourished   like anything and has become so deep rooted that there is no possibility of getting rid  of  it soon .the  present article is an attempt to explore all the social, economical, educational,  political, and administrative factors that have contributed to the status which English had acquired during the British period. Keywords: British India. English, British administrators, missionaries, Christianity, administrative purpose, economic gain, social status, and jo

Preserving Sparsity and Privacy in Straggler-Resilient Distributed Matrix Computations

Existing approaches to distributed matrix computations involve allocating coded combinations of submatrices to worker nodes, to build resilience to stragglers and/or enhance privacy. In this study, we consider the challenge of preserving input sparsity in such approaches to retain the associated computational efficiency enhancements. First, we find a lower bound on the weight of coding, i.e., the number of submatrices to be combined to obtain coded submatrices to provide the resilience to the maximum possible number of stragglers (for given number of nodes and their storage constraints). Next we propose a distributed matrix computation scheme which meets this exact lower bound on the weight of the coding. Further, we develop controllable trade-off between worker computation time and the privacy constraint for sparse input matrices in settings where the worker nodes are honest but curious. Numerical experiments conducted in Amazon Web Services (AWS) validate our assertions regarding straggler mitigation and computation speed for sparse matrices
