    Carbon deposition model for oxygen-hydrocarbon combustion. Task 6: Data analysis and formulation of an empirical model

    The formation and deposition of carbon (soot) was studied in the Carbon Deposition Model for Oxygen-Hydrocarbon Combustion Program. An empirical, 1-D model for predicting soot formation and deposition in LO2/hydrocarbon gas generators/preburners was derived. The experimental data required to anchor the model were identified and a test program to obtain the data was defined. In support of the model development, cold flow mixing experiments using a high injection density injector were performed. The purpose of this investigation was to advance the state-of-the-art in LO2/hydrocarbon gas generator design by developing a reliable engineering model of gas generator operation. The model was formulated to account for the influences of fluid dynamics, chemical kinetics, and gas generator hardware design on soot formation and deposition

    Portfolio optimisation models and properties of return distributions

    Mean-risk models have been widely used in portfolio optimisation. However, such models may produce portfolios that are dominated with respect to second order stochastic dominance and therefore not optimal for rational and risk-averse investors. This paper considers the problem of constructing a portfolio which is nondominated with respect to second order stochastic dominance and whose return distribution has specified desirable properties. The problem is multi-objective and is transformed into a single objective problem by using the reference point method, in which target levels, known as aspiration points, are specified for the objective function values. A model is proposed in which the aspiration points relate to ordered return outcomes of the portfolio return. The model is extended by additionally specifying reservation points, which act pre-emptively in the optimisation. The theoretical properties of the models are studied. The performance of the models on real data drawn from the Hang Seng index is also investigated

    A two-stage stochastic programming with recourse model for the problem of determining optimal planting plans for a vegetable crop is presented in this paper. Uncertainty caused by factors such as weather on yields is a major influence on many systems arising in horticulture. Traditional linear programming models are generally unsatisfactory in dealing with the uncertainty and produce solutions that are considered to involve an unacceptable level of risk. The first stage of the model relates to finding a planting plan which is common to all scenarios and the second stage is concerned with deriving a harvesting schedule for each scenario. Solutions are obtained for a range of risk aversion factors that not only result in greater expected profit compared to the corresponding deterministic model, but also are more robust

    Unethical aspects of homeopathic dentistry

    In the last year there has been a great deal of public debate about homeopathy, the system of alternative medicine whose main principles are that like cures like and that potency increases relative to dilution. The House of Commons Select Committee on Science and Technology concluded in November 2009 that there is no evidence base for homeopathy, and agreed with some academic commentators that homeopathy should not be funded by the NHS. While homeopathic doctors and hospitals are quite commonplace, some might be surprised to learn that there are also many homeopathic dentists practising in the UK. This paper examines the statements made by several organisations on behalf of homeopathic dentistry and suggests that they are not entirely ethical and may be in breach of various professional guidelines

    Cavity-enhanced absorption using an atomic line source: application to deep-UV measurements

    Optical cavities are commonly used to increase the sensitivity of absorption measurements, but have not been extensively used below 300 nm, mainly owing to the limited light sources at these wavelengths. While some progress has been made using cavity ring-down spectroscopy, these systems rely on complex and expensive lasers. Here we investigate an approach combining Cavity-Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy (CEAS) with an inexpensive low vapour pressure mercury lamp for sensitive absorption measurements at 253.7 nm. We demonstrate that the CEAS absorption in our system is 50 times greater than the absorption found in a single-pass configuration; using this approach, we obtained limits of detection of 8.1 pptv (66 ng m(-3)) for gaseous elemental mercury and 8.4 ppbv for ozone. We evaluate the performance of the system and discuss potential improvements and applications of this approach

    R-matrix calculations of electron impact electronic excitation of BeH

    The R-matrix method is used to perform high-level calculations of electron collisions with beryllium mono-hydride at its equilibrium geometry with a particular emphasis on electron impact electronic excitation. Several target and scattering models are considered. The calculations were performed using (1) the UKRMol suite which relies on the use of Gaussian type orbitals (GTOs) to represent the continuum and (2) using the new UKRMol+ suite which allows the inclusion of B-spline type orbitals in the basis for the continuum. The final close-coupling scattering models used the UKRMol+ code and a frozen core, valence full configuration interaction, method based on a diffuse GTO atomic basis set. The calculated electronic properties of the molecule are in very good agreement with state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations. The use of the UKRMol+ suite proved critical since it allowed the use of a large R-matrix sphere (35 Bohr), necessary to contain the diffuse electronic states of the molecule. The corresponding calculations using UKRMol are not possible due to numerical problems associated with the combination of GTO-only continuum and a large R-matrix sphere. This work provides the first demonstration of the utility and numerical stability of the new UKRMol+ code. The inelastic cross sections obtained here present a significant improvement over the results of earlier studies on BeH

    A classification scheme for annotating speech acts in a business email corpus

    This paper reports on the process of manual annotation of speech acts in a corpus of business emails, in the context of the PROBE project (PRagmatics of Business English). The project aims to bring together corpus, computational, and theoretical linguistics by drawing on the insights made available by the annotated corpus. The corpus data sheds light on the linguistic and discourse structures of speech act use in business email communication. This enhanced linguistic description can be compared to theoretical linguistic representations of speech act categories to assess how well traditional distinctions relate to real-world, naturally occurring data. From a computational perspective, the annotated data is required for the development of an automated speech act tagging tool. Central to this research is the creation of a high quality, manually annotated speech act corpus, using an easily interpretable classification scheme. We discuss the scheme chosen for the project and the training guidelines given to the annotators, and describe the main challenges identified by the annotators

    In-gas-cell laser ionization spectroscopy in the vicinity of 100Sn: Magnetic moments and mean-square charge radii of N=50-54 Ag

    In-gas-cell laser ionization spectroscopy studies on the neutron deficient 97-101Ag isotopes have been performed with the LISOL setup. Magnetic dipole moments and mean-square charge radii have been determined for the first time with the exception of 101Ag, which was found in good agreement with previous experimental values. The reported results allow tentatively assigning the spin of 97,99Ag to 9/2 and confirming the presence of an isomeric state in these two isotopes, whose collapsed hyperfine structure suggests a spin of 1/2 . The effect of the N=50 shell closure is not only manifested in the magnetic moments but also in the evolution of the mean-square charge radii of the isotopes investigated, in accordance with the spherical droplet model predictions

    Modulation of outer bank erosion by slump blocks: Disentangling the protective and destructive role of failed material on the three-dimensional flow structure

    The three-dimensional flow field near the banks of alluvial channels is the primary factor controlling rates of bank erosion. Although submerged slump blocks and associated large-scale bank roughness elements have both previously been proposed to divert flow away from the bank, direct observations of the interaction between eroded bank material and the 3-D flow field are lacking. Here we use observations from multibeam echo sounding, terrestrial laser scanning, and acoustic Doppler current profiling to quantify, for the first time, the influence of submerged slump blocks on the near-bank flow field. In contrast to previous research emphasizing their influence on flow diversion away from the bank, we show that slump blocks may also deflect flow onto the bank, thereby increasing local shear stresses and rates of erosion. We use our measurements to propose a conceptual model for how submerged slump blocks interact with the flow field to modulate bank erosion.UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC
