The coating on the glass surface was made by heating the mixture of resinate Ag and tetra-n-butyl orthotitanate (TBO) at 570 oC for 1 hour. By combining two sets of survey data - provincial competitiveness index (PCI) from VNCI-VCCI and USAID and annual enterprise census from Vietnam General Statistics Office (GSO) for the period between 2005 and 2011, we estimate the effects of sub-national institutions measured by Provincial Competitiveness Index on firm survival in Vietnam. Our results show that sub-national institutions have a positive effect on firm’s survival in both short-run and long-run. The effect, however, diminishes over time, indicating that newly entered firms are more likely to survive

Analyzing the Determinants of Services Trade Flow between Vietnam and European Union: Gravity Model Approach

This paper aims at analyzing the determinants of services trade flows between Vietnam and European Union. In this respect, a gravity model has been estimated with panel data and pooled, random and fixed effect estimation covering the period of ten years from 2002 to 2011 for total services trade, services exports and services imports between Vietnam and European Union separately. The estimated results on total services trade indicate that bilateral services trade flows between Vietnam and its European partner countries are mainly affected by GDP per capita gap between Vietnam and partner countries, population of partner countries, real effective exchange rate, colonial relationship and being former members of CMEA

The relation between university GPA and family background: Evidence from a university in Vietnam

Based on three data sets of information on students of a university in Vietnam, we estimate the factors affecting GPA by using the two-stage least squares (2SLS) method. The results of estimation highlight that parents’ occupation as farmers and living location in rural areas have an adverse impact on the GPA of students at university (University GPA). Causally, the government does not control or monitor the hours of part-time work of students earning a living cost and tuition fee, which rise dynamically in city located the university. Furthermore, we also find a positive relation between national university entrance point and the university GPA

Threat to Cedar, Cedrela odorata, Plantations in Vietnam by the Weevil, Aclees sp.

The recent decline and death of young cedar, Cedrela odorata L. (Sapindales: Meliaceae), plantations in Vietnam is caused by Aclees sp. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a wood-boring brown weevil. A field study was undertaken in three-year-old plantations in two districts in Thanh Hoa province in August 2008. Trees were heavily impacted by the weevil, Aclees; the infestation level (P) ranged from 80 to 100% and the average damage index (R) ranged from 1.8 to 2.8. Observations over one year enabled the life history to be determined. Eggs were laid (February to March, September to November) inside the bark from the base of the trunk up to 60 cm in height. Larvae formed extensive feeding tunnels in the inner bark and sap wood. Pupation occurred in feeding tunnels or pupal chambers in the sapwood. Adults emerged twice a year, February to March and August to October. It is concluded that Aclees is a threat to C. odorata plantations in tropical regions of the world, and quarantine measures should be implemented to reduce the risk of spread

Modeling the determinants of job satisfaction in Vietnam

The study focuses on a number of policy-relevant variables such as wage policy and training plans for workers, as well as absolute and relative wages, union membership, and job position. Possible differences in job satisfaction of workers in domestic versus Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) firms are examined. The research utilizes a unique employer-employee matched survey conducted by the North-South Institute (Canada) to investigate the determinants of job satisfaction, and survey data from the Center of Analysis and Forecasting, the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences
