PKS2250-41: a case study for triggering
We present the results of a multiwavelength study of the z = 0.31 radio
source PKS2250-41. Integral field unit and long-slit spectroscopy obtained
using VIMOS and FORS1 on the VLT, and archival HST optical imaging observations
are used to study the morphology, kinematics and ionisation state of the
extended emission line region (EELR) surrounding this source, and also a
companion galaxy at a similar redshift. Near-infrared imaging observations
obtained using the NTT are used to analyse the underlying galaxy morphologies.
The EELR displays a complex variety of different gas kinematics and ionization
states, consistent with a mixture of radio source shocks and AGN
photoionization. The radio galaxy is likely to lie within a group environment,
and is plausibly undergoing interactions with one or more other objects. The
disk-like galaxy to the northeast of the radio source lies at a similar
redshift to the radio galaxy itself, and has its major axis position angle
aligned with the filamentary continuum and line emission extending outwards
from the radio galaxy. This filamentary structure is most plausibly interpreted
as a tidal structure associated with an interaction involving the radio source
host galaxy and the aligned companion galaxy to the north-east; this encounter
may have potentially triggered the current epoch of radio source activity.
Overall, PKS2250-41 displays some of the best evidence that radio source

Optical spectrum of SN 1978K: emission from shocked clouds in the circumstellar wind
An optical spectrum of SN 1978K (NGC 1313) in the range of 4000-7200 A was obtained on 1992 October 22, i.e. 14.4 yr after the outburst. The spectrum is still dominated by the narrow (FWHMM2M_solar) supernova ejecta with the present radius ~(2-3)x10^17 cm. The mass of circumstellar material involved in the dynamical interaction is ~=1M_solar and the corresponding mass-loss rate of pre-SN wind is ~2x10^-4 M_solar yr^-1. The observed X-ray emission is attributed to the shock waves in the boundary layer of the same population of clouds. Alternatively, however, the X-ray emission might emanate from the shock waves in a different cloud population with a lower density
Extended Emission Line Gas in Radio Galaxies - PKS0349-27
PKS0349-27 is a classical FRII radio galaxy with an AGN host which has a
spectacular, spiral-like structure in its extended emission line gas (EELG). We
have measured the velocity field in this gas and find that it splits into 2
cloud groups separated by radial velocities which at some points approach 400
km/s Measurements of the diagnostic emission line ratios [OIII]5007/H-beta,
[SII]6716+6731/H-alpha, and [NII]6583/H-alpha in these clouds show no evidence
for the type of HII region emission associated with starburst activity in
either velocity system. The measured emission line ratios are similar to those
found in the nuclei of narrow-line radio galaxies, but the extended
ionization/excitation cannot be produced by continuum emission from the active
nucleus alone. We present arguments which suggest that the velocity
disturbances seen in the EELG are most likely the result of a galaxy-galaxy
collision or merger but cannot completely rule out the possibility that the gas

Dynamics and Excitation of Radio Galaxy Emission-Line Regions - I. PKS 2356-61
Results are presented from a programme of detailed longslit spectroscopic
observations of the extended emission-line region (EELR) associated with the
powerful radio galaxy PKS 2356-61. The observations have been used to construct
spectroscopic datacubes, which yield detailed information on the spatial
variations of emission-line ratios across the EELR, together with its kinematic
structure. We present an extensive comparison between the data and results
obtained from the MAPPINGS II shock ionization code, and show that the physical
properties of the line-emitting gas, including its ionization, excitation,
dynamics and overall energy budget, are entirely consistent with a scenario
involving auto-ionizing shocks as the dominant ionization mechanism. This has
the advantage of accounting for the observed EELR properties by means of a
single physical process, thereby requiring less free parameters than the
alternative scheme involving photoionization by radiation from the active
nucleus. Finally, possible mechanisms of shock formation are considered in the
context of the dynamics and origin of the gas, specifically scenarios involving
infall or accretion of gas during an interaction between the host radio galaxy

Radio-Luminous Southern Seyfert Galaxies. I. Radio Images and Selected Optical/Near-Infrared Spectroscopy
This is the first of two papers in which a study is made of a sample of 12
southern radio-luminous Seyfert galaxies. Our aim is to investigate possible
correlations between radio morphology and nuclear/circumnuclear emission-line
properties. In this paper we present radio images at 13, 6, and 3 cm taken with
the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), global far-infrared (FIR)
properties for the whole sample, and optical and near-infrared (NIR)
spectroscopy of an interesting subset. We find a mixture of radio morphologies,
including linear, diffuse and compact sources. When the FIR colors of the
galaxies are considered there is an indication that the compact radio sources
have warmer FIR colors than the diffuse sources, whereas the linear sources
span a wide range of FIR colors. There is a wide variation in radio
spectral-indices, suggesting that free-free absorption is significant in some
systems, particularly IRAS 11249-2859, NGC 4507, and NGC 7213. Detailed
emission-line studies are presented of 4 galaxies IC 3639, NGC 5135, NGC 3393 &
IRAS 11249-2859. In IC 3639 we present evidence of vigorous, compact star
formation enclosed by very extended [OI]6300 emission, suggestive of the
boundary between a diffuse outflow and the surrounding ISM. In another galaxy,
IC 5063, we see evidence for the possible interaction of a highly collimated
outflow and the surrounding rotating inner disk. Of the 5 galaxies which show
compact radio emission, 4 have radio/FIR flux ratios consistent with an
energetically dominant AGN, whereas IC 4995 exhibits evidence for a very

A Case for Renewed Activity in the Giant Radio Galaxy J0116-473
We present ATCA radio observations of the giant radio galaxy J0116-473 at 12
and 22 cm wavelengths in total intensity and polarization. The images clearly
reveal a bright inner-double structure within more extended edge-brightened
lobe emission. The lack of hotspots at the ends of the outer lobes, the strong
core and the inner-double structure with its edge-brightened morphology lead us
to suggest that this giant radio galaxy is undergoing a renewed nuclear
activity: J0116-473 appears to be a striking example of a radio galaxy where a
young double source is evolving within older lobe material. We also report the
detection of a Mpc-long linear feature which is oriented perpendicular to the

Hubble-type outflows of the high-excitation, poly-polar planetary nebula NGC 6302 -- from expansion proper motions
The ouflowing proper motions of fifteen knots in the dominant northwestern
lobe of the high-excitation poly-polar planetary nebula NGC 6302 have been
determined by comparing their positions relative to those of faint stars in an
image taken at the San Pedro Martir Observatory in 2007 to those in a South
African Astronomical Observatory archival plate obtained by Evans in 1956. The
Hubble-type expansion of this lobe is now directly confirmed in a model
independent way from these measurements. Furthermore, an unambiguous distance
to NGC 6302 of 1.17 +/- 0.14 kpc is now determined. Also all the velocity
vectors of the fifteen knots (and two others) point back to the central source.
An eruptive event from within the central torus, approximately 2200 years

Optical and infrared observations of the supernova SN 1999el
Optical and near-infrared light curves of the Type IIn supernova 1999el in
NGC 6951 are presented. A period of 220 days (416 days in the near-infrared) is
covered from the first observation obtained a few days before maximum light.
Spectroscopic observations are also discussed. Using as a distance calibrator
the Type Ia SN 2000E, which occurred some months later in the same galaxy, and
fitting a blackbody law to the photometric data we obtain a maximum bolometric
luminosity for SN 1999el of erg s. In general, the
photometric properties of SN 1999el are very similar to those of SN 1998S, a
bright and well studied Type IIn SN, showing a fast decline in all observed
bands similar to those of Type II-L SNe. The differences with SN 1998S are
analyzed and ascribed to the differences in a pre-existing circumstellar
envelope in which dust was already present at the moment of the SN outburst. We
infer that light echoes may play a possibly significant role in affecting the
observed properties of the light curves, although improved theoretical models
are needed to account for the data. We conclude that mass loss in the
progenitor RG stars is episodic and occurs in an asymmetric way. This implies
that collapsing massive stars appear as normal Type II SN if this occurs far
from major mass loss episodes, whereas they appear as Type IIn SNe if a large

The Local Group Census: planetary nebulae in Sextans B
Five planetary nebulae (PNe) have been discovered in the nearby dwarf
irregular galaxy. Emission line images were obtained using the Wide Field
Camera of the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) at La Palma (Spain). The
candidate PNe were identified by their point-like appearance and relatively
strong [OIII] emission-line fluxes. They are located within a galactocentric
distance of 2.8 arcmin, corresponding to 1.1 kpc at the distance of Sextans B.
Luminosities are in the range 1800--5600Lsolar. Sextans B is one of the
smallest dwarf irregular galaxies with a PN population. The number of PNe
detected suggest an enhanced star formation rate between 1 and 5 Gyr ago.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
