Using qualitative data in surveys conducted by your library — learn how to empathize with potential library users by creating user personas. Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Library conducted a MISO Survey of Lynn Library and Information Technology Services to gain insight into faculty/staff, and students’ experience with Lynn Library’s resources. Using the results from the MISO survey and anecdotal evidence, Lynn Library generated eight user personas which included: a personality, motivations, key facts, frustrations, preferred channels of communication, and direct quotes. Personas will help supercharge your outreach and marketing to potential library users and engage more with current users

The Intersection of Racial Justice and Intellectual Freedom in Libraries: Moving From Performative to Transformative Action

Can support of intellectual freedom spark racial justice? Can performative support of anti-racism books spark racial justice? Decolonizing bookshelves has been a clarion call this past year since the rise of anti-racism book lists after George Floyd’s death. Libraries are usually deemed neutral entities. In an era of canceled culture, book censorship, and book banning: what is the libraries’ role in developing an open forum for intellectual freedom and racial justice? Let’s discuss what libraries and librarians can do to sustain transformative practices in equity, diversity, and inclusion, including a scan of what libraries across the United States and internationally are doing to advance racial equity and intellectual freedom

The Impact of Rap Music on White Youth

Music is a primary source of entertainment for American adolescents. Hip hop culture and rap music, in particular, have become the dominant genre of music among American youth. Hip hop rose primarily from the disadvantaged African American neighborhoods of New York City. Perhaps not surprisingly, though, it is White, middle class, suburban adolescents who drive the rap music industry with their disposable income and desire to resist the cultural norms of their parents’ generation. While sophisticated analyses of hip hop itself are appearing, the connection to white youth has not been well-studied. This project begins to fill this void, specifically exploring how contemporary rap music affects White middle-class American adolescents. Interviews and surveys were conducted with a sample of students from a small selective northeastern liberal arts college. These interviews and surveys focused on the presence of rap music and hip hop culture in their daily lives, assessing the ways music has penetrated youth culture and influenced their perspectives on race, gender, class-consciousness, and other pressing social issues that affect America’s youth
