    Analysis techniques and performance of the Domino Ring Sampler version 4 based readout for the MAGIC telescopes

    Recently the readout of the MAGIC telescopes has been upgraded to a new system based on the Domino Ring Sampler version 4 chip. We present the analysis techniques and the signal extraction performance studies of this system. We study the behaviour of the baseline, the noise, the cross-talk, the linearity and the time resolution. We investigate also the optimal signal extraction. In addition we show some of the analysis techniques specific to the readout based on the Domino Ring Sampler version 2 chip, previously used in the MAGIC II telescope.Comment: 13 pages, 20 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in NIM

    Ising superconductivity and magnetism in NbSe2_2

    Recent studies on superconductivity in NbSe2_2 have demonstrated a large anisotropy in the superconducting critical field when the material is reduced to a single monolayer. Motivated by this recent discovery, we use density functional theory (DFT) calculations to quantitatively address the superconducting properties of bulk and monolayer NbSe2_2. We demonstrate that NbSe2_2 is close to a ferromagnetic instability, and analyze our results in the context of experimental measurements of the spin susceptibility in NbSe2_2. We show how this magnetic instability, which is pronounced in a single monolayer, can enable sizeable singlet-triplet mixing of the superconducting order parameter, contrary to contemporary considerations of the pairing symmetry in monolayer NbSe2_2, and discuss approaches as to how this degree of mixing can be addressed quantitatively within our DFT framework.     Break in the VHE spectrum of PG 1553+113: new upper limit on its redshift?

    PG 1553+113 is a known BL Lac object, newly detected in the GeV-TeV energy range by H.E.S.S and MAGIC. The redshift of this source is unknown and a lower limit of z>0.09z > 0.09 was recently estimated. The very high energy (VHE) spectrum of PG 1553+113 is attenuated due to the absorption by the low energy photon field of the extragalactic background light (EBL). Here we correct the combined H.E.S.S and MAGIC spectrum of PG 1553+113 for this absorption assuming a minimum density of the evolving EBL. We use an argument that the intrinsic photon index cannot be harder than Γ=1.5\Gamma = 1.5 and derive an upper limit on the redshift of z<0.69z < 0.69. Moreover, we find that a redshift above z=0.42z = 0.42 implies a possible break of the intrinsic spectrum at about 200 GeV. Assuming that such a break is absent, we derive a much stronger upper limit of z<0.42z < 0.42. Alternatively, this break might be attributed to an additional emission component in the jet of PG 1553+113. This would be the first evidence for a second component is detected in the VHE spectrum of a blazar.Comment: revised version submitted to Ap

    Detection of Very-High Energy Gamma-Rays from the BL Lac Object PG 1553+113 with the MAGIC Telescope

    The MAGIC telescope has observed very-high energy gamma-ray emission from the BL Lac object PG 1553+113 in 2005 and 2006 at an overall significance is 8.8 sigma. The light curve shows no significant flux variations on a daily timescale. The flux level during 2005 was, however, significantly higher as compared to 2006. The differential energy spectrum between approx. 90 GeV and 500 GeV is well described by a power law with a spectral index of -4.2+-0.3. The photon energy spectrum and spectral modeling allow to pose upper limits of z=0.74 and z=0.56, respectively, on the yet undetermined redshift of PG 1553+113. Recent VLT observations of this blazar show featureless spectra in the near-IR, thus no direct redshift could be determined from these measurements.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the 30th International Cosmic Ray Conference, Merida, July 200
