    Financial Deepening, Trade Openness and Economic Growth in Latin America and the Caribbean

    This contribution investigates the direct and indirect causal interactions between financial deepening, trade openness and economic growth for 13 Latin American and Caribbean countries. Using a rather general approach to identify indicators for financial deepening and to detect Granger causality within a VAR/VECM framework, we find almost no evidence for the popular hypothesis of finance-led growth. Evidence of bidirectional finance-growth causality is stronger but mostly unstable in the long run. Most results indicate a demand-following or insignificant relationship between finance and growth in Latin America. This finding seems to be consistent with regard to the weakness and deficiencies of the region's financial systems. Further, there is no evidence that finance indirectly and unilaterally induces growth via the channel of trade openness. Thus, policies that prioritize financial and trade liberalization cannot be supported by this study. Instead, a holistic policy approach seems to be preferable that promotes the determinants of both real sector growth and financial development.     A course in mathematics appreciation

    The purpose of this study is to create a mini-course in mathematics appreciation at the senior high school level. The mathematics appreciation course would be offered as an elective to students in the 11th or 12th grade, who are concurrently enrolled in trigonometry or calculus. The topics covered in the mathematics appreciation course include: systems of numeration, congruences, Diophantine equations, Fibonacci sequences, the golden section, imaginary numbers, the exponential function, pi, perfect numbers, numbers with shape, ciphers, magic squares, and root extraction techniques. In this study, the student is exposed to mathematical proofs, where appropriate, and is encouraged to create practice problems for other members of the class to solve. Also, areas for research are suggested so that the student may explore, even more deeply, areas which hold a particular interest for that student. These topics are treated with a three-pronged approach – historical, recreational, and practical. It is the author\u27s contention, supported by research, that this approach, along with the choice of topics, will assist in developing and enhancing the mathematics potential of the student to the highest possible extent

    Regulation of Autophagy By Signaling Through the Atg1/ULK1 Complex

    AbstractAutophagy is an intracellular degradation pathway highly conserved in eukaryotic species. It is characterized by selective or bulk trafficking of cytosolic structures—ranging from single proteins to cell organelles—to the vacuole or a lysosome, in which the autophagic cargo is degraded. Autophagy fulfils a large set of roles, including nutrient mobilization in starvation conditions, clearance of protein aggregates and host defence against intracellular pathogens. Not surprisingly, autophagy has been linked to several human diseases, among them neurodegenerative disorders and cancer. Autophagy is coordinated by the action of the Atg1/ULK1 kinase, which is the target of several important stress signaling cascades. In this review, we will discuss the available information on both upstream regulation and downstream effectors of Atg1/ULK1, with special focus on reported and proposed kinase substrates
