The origin and evolution of the zodiacal dust cloud
We have now analyzed a substantial fraction of the IRAS observations of the zodiacal cloud, particularly in the 25 micron waveband. We have developed a gravitational perturbation theory that incorporates the effects of Poynting-Robertson light drag (Gomes and Dermott, 1992). We have also developed a numerical model, the SIMUL mode, that reproduces the exact viewing geometry of the IRAS telescope and calculates the distribution of thermal flux produced by any particular distribution of dust particle orbits (Dermott and Nicholson, 1989). With these tools, and using a distribution of orbits based on those of asteroidal particles with 3.4 micron radii whose orbits decay due to Poynting-Robertson light drag and are perturbed by the planets, we have been able to: (1) account for the inclination and node of the background zodiacal cloud observed by IRAS in the 25 micron waveband; (2) relate the distribution of orbits in the Hirayama asteroid families to the observed shapes of the IRAS solar system dustbands; and (3) show that there is observational evidence in the IRAS data for the transport of asteroidal particles from the main belt to the Earth by Poynting-Robertson light drag
Modified full-face snorkel mask as COVID-19 personal protective equipment: Quantitative results
The COVID-19 crisis has resulted in a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE). Adapting commercially available full-faced snorkel masks has been proposed as an alternative to narrow the gap in PPE. An advantage of the full-faced snorkel mask design is that it serves two critical purposes: eye and face protection, and high quality air filtration to protect against SARS-CoV-2. We performed quantitative testing on various full-faced snorkel masks with 3D printed adapters that accept commercially available particulate filters, and report on a design that passed Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) full-facepiece respirator standards
Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy share common cfDNA methylation profiles.
Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) contribute substantially to perinatal morbidity and mortality. Epigenetic changes point towards cardio-metabolic dysregulation for these vascular disorders. In early pregnancy, epigenetic changes using cell free DNA (cfDNA) are largely unexplored. We aimed to investigate these in HDP between 11 and 14 weeks of gestation by analysis of cfDNA methylation profiles in patients with hypertensive disorders. We identified patients without chronic hypertension but with subsequent development of preeclampsia (PE) (n = 11), with chronic hypertension (HT) but without PE development (n = 14), and lacking both PE and HT (n = 422). We matched patients according to PE risk factors into three groups (n = 5 each group): (1) PE: no HT but PE development, (2) HT: chronic hypertension but no PE and (3) Control: no PE or HT. We successfully optimized our cfDNA isolation process prior to whole genome bisulfite sequencing. Analysis of cfDNA methylation changes indicate a common predisposition in PE and HT groups, chiefly of maternal origin. Assessment of significant differentially methylated regions and annotated genes point towards a common cardiovascular predisposition in preeclampsia and hypertension groups in the first trimester. We postulate the pivotal role of the maternal cardiovascular system in HDP, which is already evident in the first trimester
Expression of a putative \u3ci\u3eflavonoid 3\u27-hydroxylase\u3c/i\u3e in sorghum mesocotyls synthesizing 3-deoxyanthocyanidin phytoalexins
In sorghum, ingress of Cochliobolus heterostrophus stimulates the synthesis of 3-deoxyanthocyanidins that act as phytoalexins. Apigeninidin and luteolinidin are two major phytoalexins induced in the first 24 h after infection. In an attempt to understand genetic regulation of the biosynthesis of sorghum phytoalexins, we isolated a differentially expressed partial cDNA. Characterization and comparison showed that this cDNA sequence corresponds to a putative flavonoid 3’-hydroxylase. Full length sequence characterization allowed us to establish that the sorghum putative f3’h cDNA encodes a peptide of 517 amino acids that has domains conserved among cytochrome P450 proteins functioning in the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway. Heterologous expression of the putative f3’h cDNA in Escherichia coli yielded a membrane preparation that catalyzed the hydroxylation of naringenin. We show here that transcription of the flavonoid 3’-hydroxylase was coordinately regulated with that of chalcone synthase and dihydroflavonol reductase, and expression of these genes was induced within the first 24 h of fungal challenge. Synthesis of apigeninidin and luteolinidin followed the induced expression of the f3’h gene, implicating its role in fungal induced expression of sorghum phytolaexins
Impact of EMA regulatory label changes on systemic diclofenac initiation, discontinuation, and switching to other pain medicines in Scotland, England, Denmark, and The Netherlands
Purpose: In June 2013 a European Medicines Agency referral procedure concluded that diclofenac was associated with an elevated risk of acute cardiovascular events and contraindications, warnings, and changes to the product information were implemented across the European Union. This study measured the impact of the regulatory action on the prescribing of systemic diclofenac in Denmark, The Netherlands, England, and Scotland. Methods: Quarterly time series analyses measuring diclofenac prescription initiation, discontinuation and switching to other systemic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs), topical NSAIDs, paracetamol, opioids, and other chronic pain medication in those who discontinued diclofenac. Absolute effects were estimated using interrupted time series regression. Results: Overall, diclofenac prescription initiations fell during the observation periods of all countries. Compared with Denmark where there appeared to be amore limited effect, the regulatory action was associated with significant immediate reductions in diclofenac initiation in The Netherlands (−0.42%, 95% CI, −0.66% to −0.18%), England (−0.09%, 95% CI, −0.11% to −0.08%), and Scotland (−0.67%, 95% CI, −0.79% to −0.55%); and falling trends in diclofenac initiation in the Netherlands (−0.03%, 95% CI, −0.06% to −0.01% per quarter) and Scotland (−0.04%, 95% CI, −0.05% to −0.02% per quarter). There was no significant impact on diclofenac discontinuation in any country. The regulatory action was associated with modest differences in switching to other pain medicines following diclofenac discontinuation. Conclusions: The regulatory action was associated with significant reductions in overall diclofenac initiation which varied by country and type of exposure. There was no impact on discontinuation and variable impact on switching
Atomic and vibrational origins of mechanical toughness in bioactive cement during setting
Bioactive glass ionomer cements (GICs) have been in widespread use for ~40 years in dentistry and medicine. However, these composites fall short of the toughness needed for permanent implants. Significant impediment to improvement has been the requisite use of conventional destructive mechanical testing, which is necessarily retrospective. Here we show quantitatively, through the novel use of calorimetry, terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and neutron scattering, how GIC’s developing fracture toughness during setting is related to interfacial THz dynamics, changing atomic cohesion and fluctuating interfacial configurations. Contrary to convention, we find setting is non-monotonic, characterized by abrupt features not previously detected, including a glass–polymer coupling point, an early setting point, where decreasing toughness unexpectedly recovers, followed by stress-induced weakening of interfaces. Subsequently, toughness declines asymptotically to long-term fracture test values. We expect the insight afforded by these in situ non-destructive techniques will assist in raising understanding of the setting mechanisms and associated dynamics of cementitious materials
