VULNERABLITY OF RURAL LIVELIHOODS IN NINH THUAN PROVINCE TO DROUGHT

    Get PDF
The risk of drought poses a significant challenge to agricultural production in Ninh Thuan Province. Therefore, this study aims to identify the factors that influence farmersā€™ livelihood outcomes due to the impact of drought. Data were collected from a survey of 231 farmers randomly selected from the districts of Thuan Nam, Thuan Bac, and Ninh Hai. In addition to descriptive statistics, a Tobit regression model was used to identify the factors influencing livelihood outcomes during mild and severe droughts. The results showed that farmersā€™ livelihood outcomes were generally low. The regression identified the financial (Ī²=0.230 and 0.205), social (Ī²=0.200 and 0.291), and human capital (Ī²=0.195 and 0.196) impacts on farmersā€™ livelihood outcomes from both mild and severe droughts. During mild drought years, seasonal adjustment (Ī²=-0.009) and migration (Ī²=0.013) were found to significantly influence livelihood outcomes. In severe drought years, government support (Ī²=-0.030) negatively affected livelihood outcomes. There is a need to establish an early warning system for climate change and extreme weather events while simultaneously disseminating information widely to farmers so that they can take timely measures to cope. Enhancing human capital by raising awareness and skills in adapting to drought and developing comprehensive abilities to implement drought adaptation strategies is needed

Combining content and social features in a deep learning approach to Vietnamese email prioritization

    Get PDF
The email overload problem has been discussed in numerous email-related studies. One of the possible solutions to this problem is email prioritization, which is the act of automatically predicting the importance levels of received emails and sorting the userā€™s inbox accordingly. Several learning-based methods have been proposed to address the email prioritization problem using content features as well as social features. Although these methods have laid the foundation works in this field of study, the reported performance is far from being practical. Recent works on deep neural networks have achieved good results in various tasks. In this paper, the authors propose a novel email prioritization model which incorporates several deep learning techniques and uses a combination of both content features and social features from email data. This method targets Vietnamese emails and is tested against a self-built Vietnamese email corpus. Conducted experiments explored the effects of different model configurations and compared the effectiveness of the new method to that of a previous work

The chapter presents mainly on different extraction methods of tannin. Some technical means required for effective extraction are also presented, for example, collection and treatment of plant and drying and storage of plant. Opportunity and challenges in application of extraction methods are also exhibited in the chapter

How Foreign Ownership and Competition Affect the Credit Growth of Commercial Banks: Evidence from A Transitional Economy

    Get PDF
This study examines the relationship between foreign ownership and market competition, proxied by bank market power, affecting the credit growth of 32 commercial banks in Vietnam from 2010 to 2020. The Random Effects Model and the Dynamic System Generalized Method of Moments were used to analyze an unbalanced panel of 278 annual observations. The findings report that foreign ownership reduces credit growth, with each percentage increase in foreign ownership reducing credit growth by 0.74%. The results indicate an inverse U-shaped relationship between competitive advantage and credit growth, with a turning point of 0.46. The main findings were found to be robust after employing an alternative market power proxy. The study recommends that bank managers and policymakers limit foreign ownership and control commercial banksā€™ market power to promote sustainable credit growth

Study Structure and Properties of Nanocomposite Material Based on Unsaturated Polyester with Clay Modified by Poly(ethylene oxide)

In recent years, polymer clay nanocomposites have been attracting considerable interests in polymers science because of their advantages. There are many scientists who researched about this kind of material and demonstrated that when polymer matrix was added to little weight of clay, properties were enhanced considerably. Because clay is a hydrophilic substance so it is difficult to use as filler in polymer matrix having hydrophobic nature, so clay needs to be modified to become compatible with polymer. In this study, poly(ethylene oxide) was used as a new modifier for clay to replace some traditional ionic surfactants such as primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary alkyl ammonium or alkylphosphonium cations having the following disadvantages: disintegrate at high temperature, catalyze polymer degradation, and make nanoproducts colorific, and so forth. In order to evaluate modifying effect of poly(ethylene oxide), modified clay products were characterize d by X-ray spectrum. Then organoclay was used to prepare nanocomposite based on unsaturated polyester. Morphology and properties of nanocomposites were measure d by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, tensile strength, and thermal stability. The results showed that clay galleries changed to intercalated state in the nanocomposites. Properties of nanocomposites were improved a lot when the loading of the organoclay was used at 1ā€‰phr

Income Diversification and Financial Performance: The Mediating Effect of Banksā€™ Size, Ownership Structure, and the Financial Crisis in Vietnam

    Get PDF
Research aims: This study focuses on the correlation between income diversification and financial performance, taking into account banksā€™ size, type of ownership, and the financial crisis.Design/Methodology/Approach: This study uses financial data of 29 commercial banks in Vietnam during the period from 2005 to 2018. This research employs a Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) regression.Research findings: The results do not find statistical evidence of a direct effect of banksā€™ income diversification on their financial performance. However, when considering the classification factors, such as the bankā€™s size and ownership type, the findings show that big banks and state-owned banks could take advantage of diversification strategies to boost their profitability. Moreover, the study has proven that income diversification generates a significant positive effect on banksā€™ financial performance during the crisis time.Theoretical contribution/Originality: This study provides a theoretical evidence on the direct effect of income diversification on a bankā€™s financial performance concerning banksā€™ size, ownership type, and the financial crisis.Practitioner/Policy implication: Further, this research also offers the bankā€™s managers, policymakers, and investors an insight of good banksā€™ financial performance in the context of an unstable economy.Research limitation/Implication: The limitations still exist in this research, such as (1) the number of banks participating in the research sample was a predictable limitation; (2) this research mainly focused on financial variables but ignored the variables representing the managersā€™ behavior and the banksā€™ organizational structure; (3) the future studies can focus on these aspects to explore further the hidden picture of diversification strategy and banking performance
