Combinatorics of reductions between equivalence relations
We discuss combinatorial conditions for the existence of various types of
reductions between equivalence relations, and in particular identify necessary
and sufficient conditions for the existence of injective reductions.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
Teacher Attitudes About Compensation Reform: Implications for Reform Implementation 2010
Examines teachers' views of merit pay and alternative compensation for those in hard-to-staff subject areas and schools and those with special knowledge and skills. Analyzes determining factors for varying levels of support. Outlines policy implications
Teacher Attitudes About Compensation Reform: Implications for Reform Implementation 2007
Examines how teachers' views of merit pay and additional pay for hard-to-staff schools, subjects, and additional certification differ by individual characteristics, including subject area, experience, and school performance. Considers policy implications
‘Arts and smarts’:assessing the impact of arts participation on academic performance during school years. Systematic literature review (Work package 2)
White Hat Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Structured Web Data for Libraries
“White hat” search engine optimization refers to the practice of publishing web pages that are useful to humans, while enabling search engines and web applications to better understand the structure and content of your website. This article teaches you to add structured data to your website so that search engines can more easily connect patrons to your library locations, hours, and contact information. A web page for a branch of the Greater Sudbury Public Library retrieved in January 2015 is used as the basis for examples that progressively enhance the page with structured data. Finally, some of the advantages structured data enables beyond search engine optimization are explored
Artificially enhanced research : Free software and fantastic research
The free software community has developed a number of tools that are useful to researchers. This presentation introduces four tools: the LibX toolbar to extend library searching throughout your Web experience; the Zotero plug-in for collecting, organizing, and citing your research materials; the LU|ZONE|UL institutional repository built on DSpace for making your research openly accessible; and the quick lookup Linux laptops that have made quick searches fast and easy for library visitors and saved Laurentian University tens of thousands of dollars in hardware replacement costs
Mobility and transverse flow visualization using phase variance contrast with spectral domain optical coherence tomography
Phase variance-based motion contrast is demonstrated using two phase analysis methods in a spectral domain optical coherence tomography system. Mobility contrast is demonstrated for an intensity matched Intralipid solution placed without flow within agarose wells. Vasculature oriented transversely to the imaging direction has been imaged for 3-4 dpf in vivo zebrafish using the phase variance contrast methods. 2D phase variance contrast images are demonstrated with imaging times only 25% higher than a Doppler flow image with comparable statistics. En face images created by integrating depth regions of 3D zebrafish intensity and phase variance contrast data demonstrate vasculature consistent with expected images
What Can Gamma Ray Bursts Teach Us About Dark Energy?
It has been suggested that Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB) may enable the expansion
rate of our Universe to be measured out to very high redshifts (z \gsim 5)
just as type Ia supernovae have done at 1--1.5. We explore this
possibility here, and find that GRB have the potential to detect dark energy at
high statistical significance, but they are unlikely to be competitive with
future supernovae missions, such as SNAP, in measuring the properties of the
dark energy. The exception to this conclusion is if there is appreciable dark
energy at early times, in which case the information from GRB's will provide an
excellent complement to the information from supernovae.Comment: 5 pages, 9 figure
