To reach the effectiveness of study, it is recommended to work on active learning method. The learning activity must be done with emphasis on the students’ characteristics. The characteristic means internal factors (cognitive entry behavior and affective entry characteristics), which are considered important as solving problems. The previous studies have shown that there is a correlation between achievement test and students’ characteristic entry behavior. At the beginning of the academic year of 2003, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Indonesia started active learning with PBL curriculum for the BDS degree. From a study about the correlation between the achievement and students’ entry behavior (previous knowledge, self concept, attitude, and anxiety during attending the test) the study showed that characteristic entry behavior contributes to the student’s achievement test. The results supported the previous study

Objective: This study aimed to identify post-cure's effect on the depth of cure (DOC) of a short fiber-reinforced resin composite (SFRC).Methods: Six EverX PosteriorTM shade A3 specimens were cured with a light-emitting diode light curing unit with 800 mW/cm2 of light irradiation for 20 s. The specimens were divided into two groups. The first was measured immediately post-cure and the second was measured 24-h post-cure. They were measured with a Vickers microhardness profile test. An independent t-test was used to analyze the significance of the differences between the DOC value and different variables. Results: The DOC of the specimens measured immediately post-cure was 3.02±0.02 mm. The DOC of the specimens measured 24-h post-cure was 3.93±0.03 mm.Conclusion: The DOC of the specimens measured 24-h post-cure was significantly higher than the DOC of the specimens measured immediately post-cure. Post-cure polymerization (24-h post-cure) can increase the DOC values of an SFRC

Caries has high prevalence oral problem in Indonesia. Bovine milk and its product has been proven to have anticariogenic effect. To analyze effect of immersed  enamel surface in bovine milk and protein whey after demineralization. Twenty one specimens of human premolar tooth enamel measured its hardness before the treatment, after demineralized with 1% citric acid (pH 2.5), and after immersed in bovine milk, whey protein and aquades for 90 minutes. Enamel hardness number was measured using Knoop Microhardness Tester with 25 g load for 5 seconds. Statistical analysis with Repeated Anova showed significant increased of enamel hardness in bovine milk and protein whey groups (p<0.05). There was no significant differences between group immersed in bovine milk and whey protein (p>0.05). Bovine milk and whey protein could remineralize enamel surface but not be able to restore the original value of email surface hardness

Objective: This study evaluated the light-curing distance and resin thickness effects on the depth of cure of short fiber–reinforced resin composites (SFRCs).Methods: Fifteen SFRC specimens with a diameter of 6 mm and thickness of 4 mm were divided into groups (n=5) with light-curing distances of 0, 2, and 4 mm. Another 15 specimens with a diameter of 6 mm and thicknesses of 3, 4, and 5 mm (n=5) were subjected to a 0-mm light-curing distance. Microhardness tests were conducted using a Vickers hardness tester (load: 200 g; dwell time: 15 s), and the depth of cure was assessed by calculating the hardness ratio of the bottom to the top surface (%). Statistical tests included one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by post hoc Fisher's LSD tests. Results: The depths of cure with 0-, 2-, and 4-mm light-curing distances were 79.0±0.7%, 77.0±0.6%, and 75.0±0.8%, while those with thicknesses of 3, 4, and 5 mm were 81.0±1.0%, 78.2±1.0%, and 34.4±2.0%, respectively. Significant differences (p<0.05) in the depth of cure were found in all groups. Conclusion: A depth of cure >80% was only attained with a 3-mm resin thickness and 0-mm light-curing distance

Rapid development in dental material sciences rendered various dental plaster production and one of them mostly used is dental stone plaster. According to survey conducted in Jakarta in 1997-1998, there are at least seven kinds of them. They are oftenly sold without marking (such as lot numbers, date of manifacture, net weight, physical properties) as regulations in accordance with ADA or ISO. This condition can affect entirely the materials using. On the other hand the prices highly increased (>300%) in 1997-1998 has made consumers preferring to choose the materials economically, although there are various brands in the market. The dentist should be informed about the importance of the packaging marking, so that they prefer to choose the right materials

The objective of this study was to find out the relationship between prior learning and performance of final test on dental material science. A sample of 70 respondents was randomly selected from students in the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Indonesia, Jakarta. The data were taken through objective (for entry learning) and essay tests. The relation among prior learning and final test on dental material science was analysed by partial correlation and multiple regression techniques. The resulting findings are as follows: there was a positive correlation between student’s prior learning and performance of final test (r = 0.533). This study also revealed that the mean score of students’ ability on prior learning and final test were higher than their theoretical mean score. It can be concluded that prior learning significantly contributed to learning achievement in dental material science
