Field Quantization, Photons and Non-Hermitean Modes
Field quantization in three dimensional unstable optical systems is treated
by expanding the vector potential in terms of non-Hermitean (Fox-Li) modes in
both the cavity and external regions. The cavity non-Hermitean modes (NHM) are
treated using the paraxial and monochromaticity approximations. The NHM
bi-orthogonality relationships are used in a standard canonical quantization
procedure based on introducing generalised coordinates and momenta for the
electromagnetic (EM) field. The quantum EM field is equivalent to a set of
quantum harmonic oscillators (QHO), associated with either the cavity or the
external region NHM. This confirms the validity of the photon model in unstable
optical systems, though the annihilation and creation operators for each QHO
are not Hermitean adjoints. The quantum Hamiltonian for the EM field is the sum
of non-commuting cavity and external region contributions, each of which is sum
of independent QHO Hamiltonians for each NHM, but the external field
Hamiltonian also includes a coupling term responsible for external NHM photon
exchange processes. Cavity energy gain and loss processes is associated with
the non-commutativity of cavity and external region operators, given in terms
of surface integrals involving cavity and external region NHM functions on the
cavity-external region boundary. The spontaneous decay of a two-level atom
inside an unstable cavity is treated using the essential states approach and
the rotating wave approximation. Atomic transitions leading to cavity NHM
photon absorption have a different coupling constant to those leading to photon
emission, a feature resulting from the use of NHM functions. Under certain

Redshifts and Velocity Dispersions of Galaxy Clusters in the Horologium-Reticulum Supercluster
We present 118 new optical redshifts for galaxies in 12 clusters in the
Horologium-Reticulum supercluster (HRS) of galaxies. For 76 galaxies, the data
were obtained with the Dual Beam Spectrograph on the 2.3m telescope of the
Australian National University at Siding Spring Observatory. After combining 42
previously unpublished redshifts with our new sample, we determine mean
redshifts and velocity dispersions for 13 clusters, in which previous
observational data were sparse. In six of the 13 clusters, the newly determined
mean redshifts differ by more than 750 km/s from the published values. In the
case of three clusters, A3047, A3109, and A3120, the redshift data indicate the
presence of multiple components along the line of sight. The new cluster
redshifts, when combined with other reliable mean redshifts for clusters in the
HRS, are found to be distinctly bi-modal. Furthermore, the two redshift
components are consistent with the bi-modal redshift distribution found for the

Laser-Induced Spall Of Aluminum And Aluminum Alloys At High Strain Rates
We conducted laser-induced spall experiments aimed at studying how a material's microstructure affects the tensile fracture characteristics at high strain rates (> 10(6) s(-1)). We used the Z-Beamlet Laser at Sandia National Laboratory to drive shocks and to measure the spall strength of aluminum targets with various microstructures. The targets were recrystallized, high-purity aluminum (Al-HP RX), recrystallized aluminum + 3 wt.% magnesium (Al-3Mg RX), and cold-worked aluminum + 3 wt.% magnesium (Al-3Mg CW). The Al-3Mg RX and Al-3Mg CW are used to explore the roles that solid-solution alloying and cold-work strengthening play in the spall process. Using a line-VISAR (Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector) and analysis of recovered samples, we were able to measure spall strength and determine failure morphology in these targets. We find that the spall strength is highest for Al-HP RX. Analysis reveals that material grain size plays a vital role in the fracture morphology and spall strength results.Mechanical Engineerin
Coherent population trapping in quantized light field
A full quantum treatment of coherent population trapping (CPT) is given for a
system of resonantly coupled atoms and electromagnetic field. We develop a
regular analytical method of the construction of generalized dark states (GDS).
It turns out that GDS do exist for all optical transitions ,
including bright transitions and with a
half-integer, for which the CPT effect is absent in a classical field. We
propose an idea to use an optically thick medium with a transition
with a half-integer as a ''quantum filter'', which transmits only

Hygromycin selection for the hpt gene, expressed from the CaMV-35S promoter, has been successful in transgenesis of a limited number of grass species. As an alternative to hpt selection Altpeter et al., (2000) reported successful transformation using paromomycin selection for the nptII gene expressed by the maize ubiquitin promoter. We have tested the utility of a number of selection cassettes using previously sporadically transformable species which nevertheless had very good tissue culture and regeneration protocols
Hierarchical clustering and formation of power-law correlation in 1-dimensional self-gravitating system
The process of formation of fractal structure in one-dimensional
self-gravitating system is examined numerically. It is clarified that
structures created in small spatial scale grow up to larger scale through
