James O. McKinsey

The first book on the subject of budgeting, and the first textbook on managerial accounting, were both authored by James O. McKinsey, a professor at the University of Chicago. He was also one of the main contributors to the development of accounting education in the United States during the first third of the twentieth century. He became president of the American Association of University Instructors in Accounting, the predecessor of the American Accounting Association

Dr. S. Paul Garner, a life member of the Academy of Accounting Historians, has a hobby that most people only dream about: traveling to accounting-related meetings throughout the world. At the age of 71, Paul is nowhere near ending his travels. This year he plans to visit Brazil, Chile and Peru. In fact, if accounting history is being discussed at a meeting anywhere in the world, Dr. Garner will probably be in attendance

Accounting History hobbies; Pete McMickle\u27s rare book collection

Dr. Peter McMickle is a professor of accounting at Memphis State University, but his major claim to fame is his avocation rather than his vocation. Pete McMickle is best known for having accumulated what is; probably the world\u27s finest collection of rare and historic accounting books. His collection of rare books now exceeds 800 volumes. Many members of the Academy have observed portions of Pete\u27s collection as he has manned the Academy\u27s booth at the American Accounting Association meetings in recent years and brought along several of his rare volumes

Academy objectives for 1988

I am honored to be able to serve you as President of the Academy for 1988. Unlike in many organizations, the position of president is not just an honorary position, but a working one. However, I have some idea of the nature of the work ahead as I have served the Academy for over a dozen years in a variety of positions including participation on the membership committee, education committee, and board of trustees.
