Berardinelli-Seip Syndrome
We have reported two cases of Berardinelli-syndrome in a family which is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of the adipose tissue, originally described by Berardinelli and Seip, has been reported in approximately 120 patients of various ethnic origins. Assuming that only 1 in 4 patients is reported.Patients present with acanthosis nigricans (dark velvety pigmentation of the skin) in the axilla, neck or groin, severe insulin resistance, high levels of serum insulin and serum triglycerides. The other clinical features consist of enlarged hands, feet and prominent mandible (acromegaloid features), increased sweating, umbilical hernia and lytic lesions (bone appear to be eaten-up on X-rays) in long bones of the upper and lower extremities (arms, forearm, hands, thigh, calf, legs and feet) such as humerus, femur, etc. Hepatomegaly from fatty liver is almost universal and may ultimately lead to cirrhosis. Splenomegaly is common. Nearly all patients have a prominent umbilicus or frank umbilical hernia. Females present with enlarged clitoris, increased body hair, absence of or irregular menstrual cycles, and polycystic ovaries (enlarged ovaries). Only a few affected women have had successful pregnancies, whereas affected men have normal fertilit
First-Principles Wannier Functions of Silicon and Gallium Arsenide
We present a self-consistent, real-space calculation of the Wannier functions
of Si and GaAs within density functional theory. We minimize the total energy
functional with respect to orbitals which behave as Wannier functions under
crystal translations and, at the minimum, are orthogonal. The Wannier functions
are used to calculate the total energy, lattice constant, bulk modulus, and the
frequency of the zone-center TO phonon of the two semiconductors with the
accuracy required nowadays in ab-initio calculations. Furthermore, the centers
of the Wannier functions are used to compute the macroscopic polarization of Si
and GaAs in zero electric field. The effective charges of GaAs, obtained by
finite differentiation of the polarization, agree with the results of linear
response theory.Comment: 12 pages, 2 PostScript figures, RevTeX, to appear in Physical Review
Length Research Paper The effects of the pine processionary moth on the increment of crimean pine trees in Bartin, Turkey
The pine processionary moth (PPM), causing significant damage on pine stands in Turkey, affects mainly crimean pine stands within the Ulus vicinity. To determine the damage, 20 sample plots of second site class crimean pine stands were measured; 10 of which were taken as the control sample and 10 of which were damaged by PPM. In all, 289 trees in the damaged areas and 316 trees in the control areas were measured. Consequently, it was ascertained that there was a loss of 22% in diameterincrement, 29% at basal area increment, 43% in height, 24.5% at height increment, and 37.5% in volume increment of damaged trees based on their age (70 years) in comparison with the control trees
Designing a template bank to observe compact binary coalescences in Advanced LIGO's second observing run
We describe the methodology and novel techniques used to construct a set of waveforms, or template bank, applicable to searches for compact binary coalescences in Advanced LIGO's second observing run. This template bank is suitable for observing systems composed of two neutron stars, two black holes, or a neutron star and a black hole. The Post-Newtonian formulation is used to model waveforms with total mass less than 4 and the most recent effective-one-body model, calibrated to numerical relativity to include the merger and ringdown, is used for total masses greater than 4 . The effects of spin precession, matter, orbital eccentricity and radiation modes beyond the quadrupole are neglected. In contrast to the template bank used to search for compact binary mergers in Advanced LIGO's first observing run, here we are including binary-black-hole systems with total mass up to several hundreds of solar masses, thereby improving the ability to observe such systems. We introduce a technique to vary the starting frequency of waveform filters so that our bank can simultaneously contain binary-neutron-star and high-mass binary-black hole waveforms. We also introduce a lower-bound on the filter waveform length, to exclude very short-duration, high-mass templates whose sensitivity is strongly reduced by the characteristics and performance of the interferometers
A Recursion-Theoretic Characterization of the Probabilistic Class PP
Probabilistic complexity classes, despite capturing the notion of feasibility, have escaped any treatment by the tools of so-called implicit-complexity. Their inherently semantic nature is of course a barrier to the characterization of classes like BPP or ZPP, but not all classes are semantic. In this paper, we introduce a recursion-theoretic characterization of the probabilistic class PP, using recursion schemata with pointers
Biodynamic lighting effects on the sleep pattern of people with dementia
Dementia can disturb the circadian rhythm more than in normal ageing people. And their biological clock is often not enough stimulated by light. Sleep disturbances form a high burden for informal caregivers and is the main reason for institutionalization. The effect of biodynamic lighting with varying intensity and colour resembling a daylight curve has hardly been objectively researched. In this study, we evaluate the exposure to biodynamic lighting on circadian functioning of 13 patients with dementia admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Three biodynamic lighting armatures designed for home use were placed in the common area for a period of three weeks and then removed for the same period. These periods were intermittent in an AB-phase design. Objective data of the sleeping pattern were collected using a bed sensor. During exposure the average frequency of night-time bed wandering significantly decreased from 11 to 5 times (P = 0.002). The average frequency of daytime napping significantly decreased from 16 to 7 times (P = 0.004). The average total night-time sleep significantly increased from 408 to 495 min (P = 0.007). The average total time out of bed at night significantly decreased from 180 to 104 min (P = 0.006). This pilot study found promising evidence (effect sizes >0.5) that biodynamic lighting, tailored to stimulate circadian entrainment, could be helpful in decreasing sleeping disturbances in patients with dementia. This biodynamic lighting setup could easily be used as a non-pharmacological intervention in a home situation
A global method for deterministic and stochastic homogenisation in BV
In this paper we study the deterministic and stochastic homogenisation of free-discontinuity functionals under linear growth and coercivity conditions. The main novelty of our deterministic result is that we work under very general assumptions on the integrands which, in particular, are not required to be periodic in the space variable. Combining this result with the pointwise Subadditive Ergodic Theorem by Akcoglu and Krengel, we prove a stochastic homogenisation result, in the case of stationary random integrands. In particular, we characterise the limit integrands in terms of asymptotic cell formulas, as in the classical case of periodic homogenisation
