Constraining the jet composition of GRB 221009A with the prompt TeV emission limit
Recent LHAASO observations of the prompt emission phase of the
brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A imposes a stringent limit on the flux ratio
between the TeV and MeV emissions, ,
during the period after the trigger. bf
This period covers the peak of the main MeV burst and is just before the TeV
afterglow emerges. Within the framework of internal shocks, we study the
internal absorption in GRB 221009A by generating a set of
synthetic bursts in a simulation that reproduces the observed feature of GRB
221009A. We find that the absorption does not lead to an
exponential cutoff, but rather a power-law spectrum, consistent with previous
works. We further find that the attenuation due to absorption
alone cannot explain the flux limit ratio of GRB 221009A, suggesting a low
ratio between synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) and synchrotron emission outputs.
This requires the magnetic field energy density to be much larger than the
synchrotron photon energy density so that the SSC flux is greatly suppressed.
This indicates that the jet composition of GRB 221009A is likely
Poynting-flux-dominated.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, comments are welcom
Mn3O4-Graphene Hybrid as a High Capacity Anode Material for Lithium Ion Batteries
We developed two-step solution-phase reactions to form hybrid materials of
Mn3O4 nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets for lithium ion
battery applications. Mn3O4 nanoparticles grown selectively on RGO sheets over
free particle growth in solution allowed for the electrically insulating Mn3O4
nanoparticles wired up to a current collector through the underlying conducting
graphene network. The Mn3O4 nanoparticles formed on RGO show a high specific
capacity up to ~900mAh/g near its theoretical capacity with good rate
capability and cycling stability, owing to the intimate interactions between
the graphene substrates and the Mn3O4 nanoparticles grown atop. The Mn3O4/RGO
hybrid could be a promising candidate material for high-capacity, low-cost, and
environmentally friendly anode for lithium ion batteries. Our
growth-on-graphene approach should offer a new technique for design and
synthesis of battery electrodes based on highly insulating materials.Comment: JACS in pres
Constraints on the intergalactic magnetic field strength from -ray observations of GRB 221009A
Characteristics of the cascade gamma-ray signal resulting from
very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray sources, such as gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), can
be used to constrain the strength and structure of intergalactic magnetic
fields (IGMF). There has been a debate on whether GRB 190114C, the first GRB
with observed TeV photons, can constrain the IGMF. Recently, LHAASO detected
the brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A, which has much larger energy in TeV band
and the spectrum extends to energy above 10 TeV, providing an unprecedented
opportunity to studying IGMF. We perform a Monte-Carlo simulation of the
cascade process with the public ELMAG code, considering the TeV data of GRB
221009A observed by LHAASO. By comparing the resulting cascade emission with
the flux limit obtained from Fermi-LAT observations, we infer a limit of for IGMF. This is much more stringent than that derived from
GRB 190114C.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Comments are welcom
Comprehensive molecular etiology analysis of nonsyndromic hearing impairment from typical areas in China
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Every year, 30,000 babies are born with congenital hearing impairment in China. The molecular etiology of hearing impairment in the Chinese population has not been investigated thoroughly. To provide appropriate genetic testing and counseling to families, we performed a comprehensive investigation of the molecular etiology of nonsyndromic deafness in two typical areas from northern and southern China.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 284 unrelated school children with hearing loss who attended special education schools in China were enrolled in this study, 134 from Chifeng City in Inner Mongolia and the remaining 150 from Nangtong City in JiangSu Province. Screening was performed for <it>GJB2</it>, <it>GJB3</it>, <it>GJB6</it>, <it>SLC26A4</it>, <it>12S rRNA</it>, <it>and tRNA</it><it>ser</it>(<it>UCN</it>) genes in this population. All patients with <it>SLC26A4 </it>mutations or variants were subjected to high-resolution temporal bone CT scan to verify the enlarged vestibular aqueduct.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mutations in the <it>GJB2 </it>gene accounted for 18.31% of the patients with nonsyndromic hearing loss, 1555A>G mutation in mitochondrial DNA accounted for 1.76%, and <it>SLC26A4 </it>mutations accounted for 13.73%. Almost 50% of the patients with nonsyndromic hearing loss in these typical Chinese areas carried <it>GJB2 </it>or <it>SLC26A4 </it>mutations. No significant differences in mutation spectrum or prevalence of <it>GJB2 </it>and <it>SLC26A4 </it>were found between the two areas.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In this Chinese population, 54.93% of cases with hearing loss were related to genetic factors. The <it>GJB2 </it>gene accounted for the etiology in about 18.31% of the patients with hearing loss, <it>SLC26A4 </it>accounted for about 13.73%, and <it>mtDNA </it>1555A>G mutation accounted for 1.76%. Mutations in <it>GJB3, GJB6</it>, and <it>mtDNA tRNA</it><it>ser</it>(<it>UCN</it>) were not common in this Chinese cohort. Conventionally, screening is performed for <it>GJB2</it>, <it>SLC26A4</it>, and mitochondrial <it>12S rRNA </it>in the Chinese deaf population.</p
LC/MS Guided Isolation of Alkaloids from Lotus Leaves by pH-Zone-Refining Counter-Current Chromatography
The traditional methods used in natural product separation primarily target the major components and the minor components may thus be lost during the separation procedure. Consequently, itās necessary to develop efficient methods for the preparative separation and purification of relatively minor bioactive components. In this paper, a LC/MS method was applied to guide the separation of crude extract of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) leaves whereby a minor component was identified in the LC/MS analysis. Afterwards, an optimized pH-zone-refining CCC method was performed to isolate this product, identified as N-demethylarmepavine. The separation procedure was carried out with a biphasic solvent system composed of hexane-ethyl acetate-methyl alcohol-water (1:6:1:6, v/v) with triethylamine (10 mM) added to the upper organic phase as a retainer and hydrochloric acid (5 mM) to the aqueous mobile phase eluent. Two structurally similar compounds ā nuciferine and roemerine ā were also obtained from the crude lotus leaves extract. In total 500 mg of crude extract furnished 7.4 mg of N-demethylarmepavine, 45.3 mg of nuciferine and 26.6 mg of roemerine with purities of 90%, 92% and 96%, respectively. Their structures were further identified by HPLC/ESI-MSn, FTICR/MS and the comparison with reference compounds
Human Parechovirus Infections in Monkeys with Diarrhea, China
Information about human parechovirus (HPeV) infection in animals is scant. Using 5ā² untranslated region reverse transcriptionāPCR, we detected HPeV in feces of monkeys with diarrhea and sequenced the complete genome of 1 isolate (SH6). Monkeys may serve as reservoirs for zoonotic HPeV transmissions and as models for studies of HPeV pathogenesis
