This study presents a geohistorical portrait of the setting up of indigenous reserves in Quebec. Through the analytical apprehension of this decisive event in the history of First Nations and of the society of Quebec itself, we aim to offer a socio-spatial typology capable of unveiling underlying dynamics of power and their implications. The landscape itself being a highly determining element with regards to the colonial context, geography has many relevant concepts and approaches at its disposal to render the complexity prevailing over the layout of the land and of the power structures that administer it. This comprehensive geographical analysis thus permits the identification of the spatiotemporal course of events in which the creation of reserves in Quebec participates as well as its contributing factors. By exposing the tendencies and temporalities relative to the creation of "Indian reserves" of Quebec and the role played by their geographical background, this critical study highlights the impact of the racial dynamics within the colonial State and how they have affected territorial planning, generating structuring effects that still have repercussions in Quebec society to this day

Multidimensional Scaling of Emotional Responses to Music: The Effect of Musical Expertise and of the Duration of the Excerpts.

Musically trained and untrained listeners were required to listen to 27 musical excerpts and to group those that conveyed a similar emotional meaning (Experiment 1). The groupings were transformed into a matrix of emotional dissimilarity that was analysed through multidimensional scaling methods (MDS). A 3-dimensional space was found to provide a good fit of the data, with arousal and emotional valence as the primary dimensions. Experiments 2 and 3 confirmed the consistency of this 3-dimensional space using excerpts of only 1 second duration. The overall findings indicate that emotional responses to music are very stable within and between participants, and are weakly influenced by musical expertise and excerpt duration. These findings are discussed in light of a cognitive account of musical emotion. Correspondence should be addressed to E. Bigand, LEA

IUPHAR-DB: new receptors and tools for easy searching and visualization of pharmacological data

    Get PDF
The IUPHAR database is an established online reference resource for several important classes of human drug targets and related proteins. As well as providing recommended nomenclature, the database integrates information on the chemical, genetic, functional and pathophysiological properties of receptors and ion channels, curated and peer-reviewed from the biomedical literature by a network of experts. The database now includes information on 616 gene products from four superfamilies in human and rodent model organisms: G protein-coupled receptors, voltage- and ligand-gated ion channels and, in a recent update, 49 nuclear hormone receptors (NHRs). New data types for NHRs include details on co-regulators, DNA binding motifs, target genes and 3D structures. Other recent developments include curation of the chemical structures of approximately 2000 ligand molecules, providing electronic descriptors, identifiers, link-outs and calculated molecular properties, all available via enhanced ligand pages. The interface now provides intelligent tools for the visualization and exploration of ligand structure-activity relationships and the structural diversity of compounds active at each target. The database is freely available at http://www.iuphar-db.org
