Examination of a newly discovered specimen of Nuvol showed that our earlier species determination of Nuvol umbrosus Navás had been incorrect and that our “redescription” of the species actually applied to an undescribed species. Here, we redescribe the true N. umbrosus, based on a newly discovered male specimen. This specimen closely resembles Navás’ description, and it was collected from the Atlantic Forest as was the original type specimen. In addition, we assign the previously misidentified Nuvol specimens from the Amazonian region to a separate species, Nuvol satur Sosa & Tauber, sp. nov. As a result of these actions, the genus Nuvol now contains two morphologically and geographically distinct species. In addition, the abdomens and genitalia of both sexes of Nuvol are now described (although each from a separate species)

In the northeastern of Pará, cowpea is one of the main protein sources of the population. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of liming, the P and K mineral fertilization, and the combination of seed inoculation with Rhizobium associated with mineral N supplementation in the growth and production of cowpea cultivars. Two experiments were carried out in two consecutive years at the Federal Rural University of Amazonia (Capitão Poço-PA). A randomized block experimental design with subdivided plots was used with four replications, two cowpea cultivars (BRS Tapaihum and BRS Marataoã) and six fertilization and liming treatments: i) without fertilization and without liming; ii) P and K mineral fertilization, liming and seed inoculation with Rhizobium; iii) P and K mineral fertilization and seed inoculation with Rhizobium; iv) N, P and K mineral fertilization and liming; v) P and K mineral fertilization and liming; and vi) N, P and K mineral fertilization, liming and seed inoculation with Rhizobium. Cowpea responded to liming and P and K mineral fertilization, but not N fertilization. There was no difference between the supply of N through seed inoculation or mineral fertilization. Thus, it is suggested to inoculate seeds with Rhizobium in order to maintain the soil N reserv

Dementia in Latin America : paving the way towards a regional action plan

Regional challenges faced by Latin American and Caribbean countries (LACs) to fight dementia, such as heterogeneity, diversity, political instabilities, and socioeconomic disparities, can be addressed more effectively grounded in a collaborative setting based on the open exchange of knowledge. In this work, the Latin American and Caribbean Consortium on Dementia (LAC-CD) proposes an agenda for integration to deliver a Knowledge to Action Framework (KtAF). First, we summarize evidence-based strategies (epidemiology, genetics, biomarkers, clinical trials, nonpharmacological interventions, networking and translational research) and align them to current global strategies to translate regional knowledge into actions with transformative power. Then, by characterizing genetic isolates, admixture in populations, environmental factors, and barriers to effective interventions and mapping these to the above challenges, we provide the basic mosaics of knowledge that will pave the way towards a KtAF. We describe strategies supporting the knowledge creation stage that underpins the translational impact of KtAF

Ceraeochrysa Adams is one of the largest and widely distributed green lacewing genus. Many species has been related as an important biological control agents of insects pest in agricultural situations. In Venezuela, the study of green lacewings has been passed over and only Ceraeochrysa cubana, C. everes, and C. valida species has been reported. Considering this problem, several sampling in Lara (Tarabana), Yaracuy (Aroa, Nirgua), Portuguesa (Las Matas), Barinas (Socopo) and Miranda (Tacata) states were made intending to make an inventory of Ceraeochrysa species that occur in orchards of Citrus spp. in Venezuela. The insects samples were collected with proper nets, put on plastic bottles, taken to the lab, frozen, pinned and dried. Afterward, the abdomen was cut and macerated in KOH 10% solution by two hours, tinted with clorazol-black and it was made the corresponding analyses to identify the exemplars by comparing their genitals among available specialized essays and publications. It was found C. cincta, C. cubana, C. everes and C. valida species already reported to Venezuela and the species C. acmon, C. caligata, C. claveri, C. dislepis, C. sanchezi, C. scapularis, C. squama, C. montoyana, in addition to exemplars Ceraeochrysa sp1, Ceraeochrysa sp2, Ceraeochrysa sp3 and Ceraeochrysa sp4. For each sample it had been made the re-descriptions and descriptions correspondents. The re-description were justified by the intraspecifics variations that were observed, then a taxonomic key were drawn to indentify the species and, for each of them, were realized model sheets that brings us the standings characteristics of studied species. Further studies will be necessary to use these species in pest management programs

Ilustrações e fotografias dos exemplares estudados são disponibilizadasChrysopidae is a large family whose species are natural enemies of arthropods pests in several crops. The larvae and sometimes adult are predators of mites, mealybugs, whiteflies, small true bugs and eggs and neonate larvae. In Venezuela, taxonomic studies on chrysopids are rare and only 30 species from eight genus were previously described. Therefore, objective of this research was to carry out a scientific inventory of the Ceraeochrysa, Chrysoperla, Chrysopodes and Plesiochrysa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) species in Venezuelan ecosystems and Specimens deposited in the allowing Museum: Universidad Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado (UCOB) and Museo del Instituto de Zoología Agricola (MIZA) Universidad Central de Venezuela were examined. The apical region of the abdomen was extracted and made translucid in KOH 10% by 60 minutes. After that, the internal content in the abdomen was washed with distilled water and colored with Black Clorazol. The species characterization was made using the genitalia characters. 24 Ceraeochrysa species, 14 Chrysopodes, four Chrysoperla and seven Plesiochrysa were described. Venezuela has a great diversity of genera and species of Chrysopidae poorly studied and further studies are necessary to constitute a solid background about the different species and the potential use of these biological control programs. The specimens collected for the development of this research, enables the founding of the Chrysopidae collection of UCOB Museum. Illustrations and photographs of the species studied are providedCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES

The aim of this study was to verify the pattern and the spatial and temporal behavior of the corn earworm and corn-silk fly in the corn crop. Hybrid corn was planted without chemical insect control in one hectare, this area was divided into 100 plots of 100 m². For the occurrence of Euxesta spp. all parts of the plants were visually analyzed, whereas for Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) 10 ears were removed at random from each plot, totaling 1,000 ears per sample. Population fluctuation was related to the phenological stages of corn. For spatial behavior, the dispersion indices, frequency distribution models and geostatistics (Krigagem) were analyzed. The corn earworm (small and large) and corn-silk fly showed aggregate pattern and spatial behavior. The reach of caterpillars 1 cm, with spatial dependence being considered moderate. The corn-silk fly had a maximum area of influence of 1.33 ha with moderate and weak spatial dependence. The maps demonstrated that these insects occur dispersed throughout the corn area, but with aggregations influenced by the adjacent areas and edges of the crop. The largest occurrence of corn earworms was at the R3 stage. It was also found that the corn-silk fly followed the occurrence of the corn earworm. It is concluded that the studied pests have an aggregate spatial tendency in the corn crop and with the influence of adjacent areas, in addition to presenting related population peaks in the reproductive period of the corn crop
