Local Protectionism and Regional Specialization: Evidence from China’s Industries
This paper uses a dynamic panel estimation method to investigate the determinants of regional specialization in China’s industries, paying particular attention to local protectionism. Less geographic concentration is found in industries where the past tax-plus-profit margins and the shares of state ownership are high, re- flecting stronger local government protection of these industries. The evidence also supports the scale-economies theory of regional specialization. Finally, the overall time trend of regional specialization of China’s industries is found to have reversed an early drop in the mid 1980s, and registered a significant increase in the later years.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/39951/3/wp565.pd
Do the technical indicators reward chartists? A study on the stock markets of China, Hong Kong and Taiwan
This paper studies the profitability of applying technical analysis that signals the entry and exit from the stock market in three Chinese stock markets - the Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taiwan Stock Exchanges. The Simple Moving Average (MA) and its extensions, Exponential MA, Dual MA, Triple MA, MACD and TRIX for both long and short strategies are examined. Applying the trading signals generated by the MA family to the Greater China markets, significantly positive returns are generated, which outperform the buy-and-hold strategy. The cumulative wealth obtained also surpasses that of the buy-and-hold strategy regardless of transaction costs. In addition, we study the performance of the MA family before and after the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and find that the MA family works well in both sub-periods and in different market conditions of bull runs, bear markets and mixed markets. That technical analysis can forecast the directions of these markets implies that the three China stock markets are not efficient.Technical analysis, Moving Average, buy-and-hold strategy
Soft vibrational mode associated with incommensurate orbital order in multiferroic CaMnO
We report inelastic light scattering measurements of lattice dynamics related
to the incommensurate orbital order in . Below the
ordering temperature , we observe extra
phonon peaks as a result of Brillouin-zone folding, as well as a soft
vibrational mode with a power-law -dependent energy, . This temperature dependence demonstrates the
second-order nature of the transition at , and it indicates that
the soft mode can be regarded as the amplitude excitation of the composite
order parameter. Our result strongly suggests that the lattice degrees of
freedom are actively involved in the orbital-ordering mechanism.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

Adverse drug reactions due to opioid analgesic use in New South Wales, Australia: a spatial-temporal analysis
Background: Pharmaceutical opioid analgesic use continues to rise and is associated with potentially preventable harm including hospitalisation for adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Spatial detection of opioid-related ADRs can inform future intervention strategies. We aimed to investigate the geographical disparity in hospitalised ADRs related to opioid analgesic use, and to evaluate the difference in patient characteristics between areas inside and outside the geographic clusters. This study was supported by the NHMRC CRE Medicines and Ageing Small
