    Risk of breast cancer in young women in relation to body size and weight gain in adolescence and early adulthood

    Findings have been inconsistent on effects of adolescent body size and adult weight gain on risk of breast cancer in young women. These relations were examined in a population-based case control study of 1590 women less than 45 years of age newly diagnosed with breast cancer during 1990–1992 in three areas of the US and an age-matched control group of 1390 women. Height and weight were measured at interview and participants asked to recall information about earlier body size. Logistic regression was used to estimate the relative risk of breast cancer adjusted for other risk factors. Women who were either much heavier or lighter than average in adolescence or at age 20 were at reduced risk. Weight gain after age 20 resulted in reduced risk, but the effect was confined to early-stage and, more specifically, lower grade breast cancer. Neither the risk reduction nor the variation by breast cancer stage or grade was explained by the method of cancer detection or by prior mammography history. These findings suggest that relations between breast cancer risk in young women and body weight at different ages is complex and that the risk reduction with adult weight gain is confined to less aggressive cancers. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig

    Morphological Mutations of Dwarf Galaxies

    Dwarf galaxies (DGs) are extremely challenging objects in extragalactic astrophysics. They are expected to originate as the first units in Cold Dark-Matter cosmology. They are the galaxy type most sensitive to environmental influences and their division into multiple types with various properties have invoked the picture of their variant morphological transformations. Detailed observations reveal characteristics which allow to deduce the evolutionary paths and to witness how the environment has affected the evolution. Here we review peculiarities of general morphological DG types and refer to processes which can deplete gas-rich irregular DGs leading to dwarf ellipticals, while gas replenishment implies an evolutionary cycling.     Towards time-resolved diffraction studies with glycogen phosphorylase.

    Laue diffraction with high intensity, broad-spectrum synchrotron radiation sources allows three-dimensional data sets on protein crystals to be recorded in seconds or milliseconds and opens the way for time-resolved studies on dynamic events in crystals. This chapter briefly reviews the field and describes progress towards time-resolved studies with glycogen phosphorylase. Methods for the synchronization of the start of reaction with the start of data collection have been developed for the phosphorolytic reaction of glycogen phosphorylase. The compound 3,5-dinitrophenylphosphate is photolabile, yielding Pi and the by-product, 3,5-dinitrophenol, which is non-reactive with the enzyme. Spectroscopic studies show that the compound has good quantum yield and that photolysis is rapid (greater than 1000 s-1). Release of the dinitrophenylate anion, following a pulse of light from a xenon flash lamp, has been monitored with a diode array spectrophotometer specially adapted for measurements on crystals. In a laboratory X-ray experiment with crystals of glycogen phosphorylase b, release of Pi and formation of the enzyme-product complex have been demonstrated.
