    In this essay, I consider how the theological virtue of hope might be practiced. I will first explain Thomas Aquinas’s account of this virtue, including its structural relation to the passion of hope, its opposing vices, and its relationship to the friendship of charity. Then, using narrative and character analysis from the film The Shawshank Redemption, I examine a range of hopeful and proto-hopeful practices concerning both the goods one hopes for and the power one relies on to attain those goods. In particular, I show how the film’s picture of the role friends and friendship play in catalyzing hope is a compelling metaphor for Christian hope’s reliance on Go

    Optimum lattice arrangement developed from a rigorous analytical basis

    The spanwise vortex-lattice arrangement is mathematically established by lattice solutions of the slender wing which are shown to be analogous to the chordwise vortex-lattice thin wing solution. Solutions for any number N of panels wing theory lift and induced drag and thin wing theory lift and moment are predicted exactly. As N approaches infinity, the slender wing elliptic spanwise loading and thin wing cotangent chordwise loading are predicted, which proves there is mathematical convergence of the vortex-lattice method to the exact answer. Based on this planform spanwise lattice arrangement, an A-vortex-lattice spanwise system is developed for an arbitrary aspect ratio A. This A-lattice has the optimum characteristic of predicting lift accurately for any value of N

    Aircraft control by propeller cyclic blades

    A theory is developed for aircraft control obtained from the propeller forces and moments generated by blade angle variation during a blade revolution. The propeller blade is pitched harmonically one cycle per propeller revolution which results in vehicle control forces and moments, termed cyclic-control. Using a power series respresentation of an arbitrary function of cyclic-blade angle, cyclic-control theory is developed which leads to exact solutions in terms of derivatives of steady-state thrust and power with respect to blade angle. An alternative solution, when the cyclic-blade angle function is limited to a sinusoidal cycle, is in terms of Bessel functions. An estimate of non-steady azimuth angle change or lag is presented. Cyclic-control analysis applied to the counter-rotating propeller shows that control forces or moments can be uniquely isolated from each other. Thus the dual rotor, in hovering mode, has propulsion without rotor tilt or moments, or, when in propeller mode at the tail of an air ship or submarine, vehicle control with no vehicle movement. Control isolation is also attainable from three or more propellers in-line

    For how long are newly chartered banks financially fragile?

    We examine the financial performance of 1,664 commercial banks chartered between 1980 and 1985, a period of intense chartering activity just preceding the banking recession of the late-1980s. We compare new banks to a benchmark sample of 2,047 small established banks. Using a split population duration model, we estimate the probability distribution of long-run failure for both sets of banks over a 14 year period, and assess how regulatory, environmental, and bank specific conditions affect that probability distribution. We find that the fragility of a new bank varies over time in a fairly regular ‘life cycle’ pattern, but that how this basic life cycle pattern is positioned vis a vis the business cycle also matters. On average, new banks are initially less likely to fail than established banks; after about four years they become more likely to fail than established banks; and as time passes and new banks mature they fail at rates similar to established banks. But banks chartered just prior to the banking recession failed at the highest rates, and their estimated hazard functions followed an extreme life cycle shape. State laws restricting the acquisition of de novo banks are associated with higher rates of new bank failure, but easy-entry chartering policies are not. We find that de novo failure is more sensitive to capital levels than established bank failure, evidence that Justifies recent increases in minimum capital requirements for de novo banks. Finally, our results suggest that early warning signals may be easier to identify for de novo banks than for established banks, perhaps because banks in the early stages of their life cycles are less heterogeneous and hence simpler to model than mature banks.Bank management ; Bank supervision
