Functioning of Primary Health Centers in the Selected Tribal Districts of Karnataka-India: Some Preliminary Observations
The study was intended to find how the Primary Health Centers in the Selected Tribal Districts of Karnataka-India are functioning and to reveal their problems and prospects. Cross-sectional, Observational study was done in a total of 35 PHCs, randomly selected from the three tribal dominant districts of Karnataka (Mysore, Chamaraja Nagar and Kodagu). A total of 35 medical and 50 para-medical staff were interviewed with pre tested questioners. For qualitative data, 100 tribal beneficiaries were selected (50 men, 50women). Data was collected through open-ended questionnaires using interviews, matrix method and focus groups study and data analyzed using SPSS software. The study found that non availability of essential fundamental facility, ill-mannered behavior of the staff, and absence of adequate man power, were some of the major reasons why tribals have negative perceptions about the PHCs. Further, this study has shown that there is a need of policy change regarding working style of PHCs
Coquaternionic quantum dynamics for two-level systems
The dynamical aspects of a spin- 1/2 particle in Hermitian coquaternionic quantum theory is investigated. It is shown that the time evolution exhibits three di erent characteristics, depending on the values of the parameters of the Hamiltonian. When energy eigenvalues are real, the evolution is either isomorphic to that of a complex Hermitian theory on a spherical state space, or else it remains unitary along an
open orbit on a hyperbolic state space. When energy eigenvalues form a complex conjugate pair, the orbit of the time evolution closes again even though the state space is hyperbolic
The TEC as a theory of embodied cognition.
We argue that the strengths of the Theory of Event Coding (TEC) can usefully be applied to a wider scope of cognitive tasks, and tested by more diverse methodologies. When allied with a theory of conceptual representation such as Barsalou's (1999a) perceptual symbol systems, and extended to data from eye-movement studies, the TEC has the potential to address the larger goals of an embodied view of cognition

The Legibility of Asian American Activism Studies
This essay examines āAsian American Activism studiesā and asks: What changes through the legibility of Asian American activism studies? What does Asian American activism research uniquely offer? We offer a historiographical analysis examining topical themes as well as theoretical and methodological interventions across time. We provide an overview of the articles in this special issue. We discuss future directions, attending to the ways that research on activism remains surprisingly sparse in certain major areas within Asian American studies as well as to the ways that particular trends within the field are anticipated to shape activism studies
Diffusion-controlled dissolution of a binary solid into a ternary liquid with partially-molten zone formation
We build a theoretical model of equilibrium dissolution of a homogeneous, solid mixture of two salts A and B, KCl and NaCl being used as the type example, into an aqueous solution of the two salts, with diffusive transport. We find that there are two sharp dissolution fronts, separating fluid, a partially molten zone containing a single solid and mixed solid. The phase change happens almost entirely at the two sharp fronts. In equilibrium, the leading front exhibits a small amount of precipitation of NaCl, simultaneous with complete dissolution of KCl. There is a unique surface in the space of far-field fluid KCl concentration, far-field fluid NaCl concentration and solid composition, dividing conditions where NaCl is the solid in the partially molten zone, from conditions where KCl is the solid in the partially molten zone. The movement rates of the dissolution fronts decrease as the concentration of either salt in the far-field fluid is increased. The movement rates of the dissolution fronts increase as either far-field temperature is increased, but this effect is smaller than that of concentration. In most circumstances, the dissolution front for a given salt moves more slowly, the more of that salt is present in the original solid, although the mass dissolution rate is not greatly affected by the solid composition
Effect of solute atoms on dislocation motion in Mg: an electronic structure perspective.
Solution strengthening is a well-known approach to tailoring the mechanical properties of structural alloys. Ultimately, the properties of the dislocation/solute interaction are rooted in the electronic structure of the alloy. Accordingly, we compute the electronic structure associated with, and the energy barriers to dislocation cross-slip. The energy barriers so obtained can be used in the development of multiscale models for dislocation mediated plasticity. The computed electronic structure can be used to identify substitutional solutes likely to interact strongly with the dislocation. Using the example of a-type screw dislocations in Mg, we compute accurately the Peierls barrier to prismatic plane slip and argue that Y, Ca, Ti, and Zr should interact strongly with the studied dislocation, and thereby decrease the dislocation slip anisotropy in the alloy
Universal quantum measurements
We introduce a family of operations in quantum mechanics that one can regard as "universal quantum measurements" (UQMs). These measurements are applicable to all finite dimensional quantum systems and entail the specification of only a minimal amount of structure. The first class of UQM that we consider involves the specification of the initial state of the systemāno further structure is brought into play. We call operations of this type "tomographic measurements", since given the statistics of the outcomes one can deduce the original state of the system. Next, we construct a disentangling operation, the outcome of which, when the procedure is applied to a general mixed state of an entangled composite system, is a disentangled product of pure constituent states. This operation exists whenever the dimension of the Hilbert space is not a prime, and can be used to model the decay of a composite system. As another example, we show how one can make a measurement of the direction along which the spin of a particle of spin s is oriented (s = 1/2, 1,...). The required additional structure in this case involves the embedding of CP^1 as a rational curve of degree 2s in CP^2s
