    Microwave spectroscopy of positronium atoms in free space

    We report measurements of the positronium (Ps) 2 3 S 1 → 2 3 P 2 interval in which atoms traveling in free space were irradiated with microwave radiation generated using a horn antenna. Previous measurements of this transition, performed using atoms in waveguides, exhibited asymmetric and shifted line shapes. In the free-space measurements we report here, much smaller line-shape asymmetry was observed, but with large frequency shifts that varied with the orientation of the horn antenna. Our observations are supported by line-shape simulations and demonstrate that variations in the microwave radiation field distribution can perturb measured line shapes and give rise to apparent frequency shifts without necessarily causing large asymmetries; this effect can explain previous measurements in which an apparent discrepancy with predictions from quantum electrodynamics was ob- served [L.     Measurement of the annihilation decay rate of 2³S₁ positronium

    We report a measurement of the annihilation decay rate of 2 3S1 positronium (Ps) atoms, Γexp(2 3S1). Ground state atoms optically excited to radiatively metastable 2 3S1 states were quenched via Stark mixing by the application of a time-delayed electric field. Rapid radiative decay of the Stark mixed states to the ground state, followed by self-annihilation, was observed via the annihilation radiation time spectrum, and used to determine the number of excited state atoms remaining at different times, and hence the decay rate. We obtain Γexp(2 3S1) = 843 ± 72 kHz, in broad agreement with the Zeeman-shifted theoretical value of 890 kHz

    Cassini observations of the thermal plasma in the vicinity of Saturn's main rings and the F and G rings

    The ion mass spectrometer on Cassini detected enhanced ion flux near Saturn's main rings that is consistent with the presence of atomic and molecular oxygen ions in the thermal plasma. The ring "atmosphere'' and "ionosphere'' are likely produced by UV photosputtering of the icy rings and subsequent photoionization of O-2. The identification of the O+ and O-2(+) ions is made using time-of-flight analysis and densities and temperatures are derived from the ion counting data. The ion temperatures over the main rings are a minimum near synchronous orbit and increase with radial distance from Saturn as expected from ion pick up in Saturn's magnetic field. The O-2(+) temperatures provide an estimate of the neutral O-2 temperature over the main rings. The ion mass spectrometer also detected significant O-2(+) outside of the main rings, near the F ring. It is concluded that between the F and G rings, the heavy ion population most likely consists of an admixture of O-2(+) and water group ions O+, OH+, and H2O+

Comprehensive oral assessment clinics were introduced and established as an integral part of comprehensive medical assessments for children with welfare concerns in Greater Glasgow and Clyde. An assessment protocol and standardised paperwork for comprehensive oral assessments were developed to enhance information sharing and patient access to appropriate care.     Multiring electrostatic guide for Rydberg positronium

    We report the results of experiments in which positronium (Ps) atoms, optically excited to Rydberg-Stark states with principal quantum numbers ranging from n = 13 to 19, were transported along the axis of a multiring electrode structure. By applying alternate positive and negative potentials to the ring electrodes, inhomogeneous electric fields suitable for guiding low-field-seeking atoms along the guide axis were generated. The multiring configuration used has the advantage that once the atoms are confined within it appropriate time-varying fields can be generated for deceleration and trapping. However, in this type of structure the possibility of nonadiabatic transitions of the fast (100 km/s) Ps atoms to unconfined high-field-seeking states exists. We show that for typical guiding fields this is not a significant loss mechanism and that efficient Ps transport can be achieved. Our data are in accordance with a Landau-Zener analysis of adiabatic transport through the field minima and Monte Carlo simulations that take into account Ps velocity distributions, electric dipole moments, and lifetimes, as well as the electric-field distributions in the guide

    Moisture transport by Atlantic tropical cyclones onto the North American continent

    Tropical Cyclones (TCs) are an important source of freshwater for the North American continent. Many studies have tried to estimate this contribution by identifying TC-induced precipitation events, but few have explicitly diagnosed the moisture fluxes across continental boundaries. We design a set of attribution schemes to isolate the column-integrated moisture fluxes that are directly associated with TCs and to quantify the flux onto the North American Continent due to TCs. Averaged over the 2004–2012 hurricane seasons and integrated over the western, southern and eastern coasts of North America, the seven schemes attribute 7 to 18 % (mean 14 %) of total net onshore flux to Atlantic TCs. A reduced contribution of 10 % (range 9 to 11 %) was found for the 1980–2003 period, though only two schemes could be applied to this earlier period. Over the whole 1980–2012 period, a further 8 % (range 6 to 9 % from two schemes) was attributed to East Pacific TCs, resulting in a total TC contribution of 19 % (range 17 to 22 %) to the ocean-to-land moisture transport onto the North American continent between May and November. Analysis of the attribution uncertainties suggests that incorporating details of individual TC size and shape adds limited value to a fixed radius approach and TC positional errors in the ERA-Interim reanalysis do not affect the results significantly, but biases in peak wind speeds and TC sizes may lead to underestimates of moisture transport. The interannual variability does not appear to be strongly related to the El Nino-Southern Oscillation phenomenon

    Simultaneous Extraction of the Fermi constant and PMNS matrix elements in the presence of a fourth generation

    Several recent studies performed on constraints of a fourth generation of quarks and leptons suffer from the ad-hoc assumption that 3 x 3 unitarity holds for the first three generations in the neutrino sector. Only under this assumption one is able to determine the Fermi constant G_F from the muon lifetime measurement with the claimed precision of G_F = 1.16637 (1) x 10^-5 GeV^-2. We study how well G_F can be extracted within the framework of four generations from leptonic and radiative mu and tau decays, as well as from K_l3 decays and leptonic decays of charged pions, and we discuss the role of lepton universality tests in this context. We emphasize that constraints on a fourth generation from quark and lepton flavour observables and from electroweak precision observables can only be obtained in a consistent way if these three sectors are considered simultaneously. In the combined fit to leptonic and radiative mu and tau decays, K_l3 decays and leptonic decays of charged pions we find a p-value of 2.6% for the fourth generation matrix element |U_{e 4}|=0 of the neutrino mixing matrix.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures with 16 subfigures, references and text added refering to earlier related work, figures and text in discussion section added, results and conclusions unchange

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Endometriosis is a gynecological disease defined by the histological presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity. Women with endometriosis have an increased risk of different types of malignancies, especially ovarian cancer and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Though there are several theories, researchers remain unsure as to the definitive cause of endometriosis. Our objective was to test the validity of the theory of mĂŒllerianosis for endometriosis, that is the misplacing of primitive endometrial tissue along the migratory pathway of foetal organogenesis</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We have collected at autopsy 36 human female foetuses at different gestational age. We have performed a morphological and immunohistochemical study (expression of oestrogen receptor and CA125) on the pelvic organs of the 36 foetuses included en-block and totally analyzed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In 4 out of 36 foetuses we found presence of misplaced endometrium in five different ectopic sites: in the recto-vaginal septum, in the proximity of the Douglas pouch, in the mesenchimal tissue close to the posterior wall of the uterus, in the rectal tube at the level of muscularis propria, and in the wall of the uterus. All these sites are common location of endometriosis in women.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We propose that a cause of endometriosis is the dislocation of primitive endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity during organogenesis.</p

    Formalization of Transform Methods using HOL Light

    Transform methods, like Laplace and Fourier, are frequently used for analyzing the dynamical behaviour of engineering and physical systems, based on their transfer function, and frequency response or the solutions of their corresponding differential equations. In this paper, we present an ongoing project, which focuses on the higher-order logic formalization of transform methods using HOL Light theorem prover. In particular, we present the motivation of the formalization, which is followed by the related work. Next, we present the task completed so far while highlighting some of the challenges faced during the formalization.     The chemical evolution of the solar neighbourhood
