Configurations of Handles and the Classification of Divergences in the String Partition Function
The divergences that arise in the regularized partition function for closed
bosonic string theory in flat space lead to three types of perturbation series
expansions, distinguished by their genus dependence. This classification of
infinities can be traced to geometrical characteristics of the string
worldsheet. Some categories of divergences may be eliminated in string theories

Gross Job Flows in Ukraine: Size, Ownership and Trade Effects
This paper documents and analyses gross job flows and their determinants in Ukraine using a unique data set of more than 2200 Ukrainian firms operating in both the manufacturing and the non-manufacturing sector for the years 1998-2000. There are several important findings in the paper. Job destruction is dominating job creation in both 1999 and 2000. In connection with other evidence we infer from this that Ukraine is only at the beginning of the restructuring process. The most clear-cut result of our analysis is the strong positive effect of new private firms on net employment growth, a finding established for other transition economies as well. At the same time, we do not find differences in the employment growth of state-owned and privatised firms. Apart from ownership effects we also find, at the firm level, an inverse correlation of size and net employment growth and of size and job reallocation. Finally, we establish that strong foreign trade links force firms to shed labour more aggressively and to engage in more restructuring when trade is directed to and originating from Western economies. Cosmic Strings, Zero Modes and SUSY breaking in Nonabelian N=1 Gauge Theories
We investigate the microphysics of cosmic strings in Nonabelian gauge
theories with N=1 supersymmetry. We give the vortex solutions in a specific
example and demonstrate that fermionic superconductivity arises because of the
couplings and interactions dictated by supersymmetry. We then use supersymmetry
transformations to obtain the relevant fermionic zero modes and investigate the
role of soft supersymmetry breaking on the existence and properties of the

Numerical studies of unsteady transonic flow over an oscillating airfoil
A finite-difference solution to the Navier-Stokes equations combined with a time-varying grid-generation technique was used to compute unsteady transonic flow over an oscillating airfoil. These computations were compared with experimental data (obtained at Ames Research Center) which form part of the AGARD standard configuration for aeroelastic analysis. A variety of approximations to the full Navier-Stokes equations was used to determine the effect of frequency, shock-wave motion, flow separation, and airfoil geometry on unsteady pressures and overall air loads. Good agreement is shown between experiment and theory with the limiting factor being the lack of a reliable turbulence model for high-Reynolds-number, unsteady transonic flows
Magnetic pressure support and accretion disk spectra
Stellar atmosphere models of ionized accretion disks have generally neglected
the contribution of magnetic fields to the vertical hydrostatic support,
although magnetic fields are widely believed to play a critical role in the
transport of angular momentum. Simulations of magnetorotational turbulence in a
vertically stratified shearing box geometry show that magnetic pressure support
can be dominant in the upper layers of the disk. We present calculations of
accretion disk spectra that include this magnetic pressure support, as well as
a vertical dissipation profile based on simulation. Magnetic pressure support
generically produces a more vertically extended disk atmosphere with a larger
density scale height. This acts to harden the spectrum compared to models that
neglect magnetic pressure support. We estimate the significance of this effect
on disk-integrated spectra by calculating an illustrative disk model for a
stellar mass black hole, assuming that similar magnetic pressure support exists

Health informatics education for clinicians and managers - What's holding up progress?
This paper reports outcomes of a national survey of health informatics (HI) education and training carried out in the UK. A questionnaire to elicit details of HI and IT skills teaching was derived from a national consensus document (Learning to Manage Health Information, LtMHI). Forms were sent to all pre-qualification medical and nursing schools and to a stratified sample of postgraduate and post-registration programmes. Three case studies were carried out in acute hospital trusts to gain insight into opportunities for continuing professional development in health informatics and IT. Our evidence suggests that in the UK, health informatics is not yet integrated into the clinical curriculum. Nearly all the pre-qualification courses made some provision for teaching IT skills. Nonetheless, many respondents felt that students did not receive sufficient training. There was considerable variation in the amount of HI teaching provided in the different educational sectors. The case studies suggested very little HI training was provided for clinical staff and take-up of provision was not monitored. A number of factors are holding up progress, the most important being a lack of staff with the knowledge and skills to provide academic leadership. Documenting helicopter operations from an energy standpoint
Results are presented of a study of the relative and absolute energy consumption of helicopters, including limited comparisons with fixed-wing aircraft, and selected surface transportation vehicles. Additional comparisons were made to determine the level of reduction in energy consumption expected from the application of advanced technologies to the helicopter design and sizing process. It was found that improvements in helicopter consumption characteristics can be accomplished through the utilization of advanced technology to reduce drag, structures weight, and powerplant fuel consumption
Accretion and evolution of solar system bodies
We use a combination of analytical and numerical methods to study dynamical processes involved in the formation of planets and smaller bodies in the solar system. Our goal was to identify and understand critical processes and to link them in a numerical model of planetesimal accretion. We study effects of these processes by applying them in the context of the standard model of solar system formation, which involves accretion of the terrestrial planets and cores of the giant planet from small planetesimals. The principal focus of our research effort is the numerical simulation of accretion of a swarm of planetesimals into bodies of planetary size. Our computer code uses a Monte Carlo method to determine collisional interactions within the swarm. These interactions are not determined simply by a relative velocity, but rather by explicit distributions of keplerian orbital elements. The planetesimal swarm is divided into a number of zones in semimajor axis, which are allowed to interact. The present version of our code has the capability of following detailed distributions of size, eccentricity, and inclination in each zone
Adaptation of a modern medium helicopter (Sikorsky S-76) to higher harmonic control
Sikorsky Aircraft has performed analytical studies, design analyses, and risk reduction tests have been performed for Higher Harmonic Control (HHC) on the S-76. The S-76 is an 8 to 10,000 lb helicopter which cruises at 145 kts. Flight test hardware has been assembled, main servo frequency response tested and upgraded, aircraft control system shake tested and verified, open loop controllers designed and fabricated, closed loop controllers defined and evaluated, and rotors turning ground and flight tests planned for the near future. Open loop analysis shows that about 2 deg of higher harmonic feathering at the blade 75% radius will be required to eliminate 4P vibration in the cockpit
