    Ecological and evolutionary processes at expanding range margins

    Many animals are regarded as relatively sedentary and specialized in marginal parts of their geographical distributions. They are expected to be slow at colonizing new habitats. Despite this, the cool margins of many species' distributions have expanded rapidly in association with recent climate warming. We examined four insect species that have expanded their geographical ranges in Britain over the past 20 years. Here we report that two butterfly species have increased the variety of habitat types that they can colonize, and that two bush cricket species show increased fractions of longer-winged (dispersive) individuals in recently founded populations. Both ecological and evolutionary processes are probably responsible for these changes. Increased habitat breadth and dispersal tendencies have resulted in about 3- to 15-fold increases in expansion rates, allowing these insects to cross habitat disjunctions that would have represented major or complete barriers to dispersal before the expansions started. The emergence of dispersive phenotypes will increase the speed at which species invade new environments, and probably underlies the responses of many species to both past and future climate change

    Competitive formation of spiro and ansa derivatives in the reactions of tetrafluorobutane-1,4-diol with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene: a comparison with butane-1,4-diol

    Reaction of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene, N3P3Cl6 (1), in two stoichiometries (1:1.2 and 1:3) with the sodium derivative of the fluorinated diol, 2,2,3,3-tetrafluorobutane-1,4-diol, (2), in THF solution at room temperature afforded six products, whose structures have been characterized by X-ray crystallography and 1H, 19F and 31P NMR spectroscopy: the mono-spiro compound, N3P3Cl4(OCH2CF2CF2CH2O), (3), its ansa isomer, (4), a di-spiro derivative N3P3Cl2(OCH2CF2CF2CH2O)2, (5), its spiro-ansa (6) and non-gem cis bis-ansa (7) isomers and a tri-spiro compound N3P3(OCH2CF2CF2CH2O)3, (8). The tri-spiro derivative (8) was also formed in the reaction of the ansa compound (4) with diol (2) in a 1:3 ratio in THF at room temperature. The reactions of (1) with step-wise additions of (2) were also investigated at low temperature (-780C) to give the same range of products as at room temperature. The results of all reactions are compared with previous work on the reactions of (1) with butane-1,4-diol/pyridine mixtures and with the reaction of hexafluorocyclotriphosphazene, N3P3F6 (9), with the silyl derivative of the diol (2), (Me3SiOCH2CF2)2, in a 1:0.4 mole ratio in the same solvent, THF

    Stereoisomerism in pentaerythritol-bridged cyclotriphosphazene tri-spiranes: spiro and ansa 1,3-propanediyldioxy disubstituted derivatives

    Four isomeric products were isolated and purified from the reaction of 1,3-propanediol with the tetra-spirane cyclophosphazene-organophosphate compound (1): viz. the di-monospiro (2a), di-monoansa (2b) and two monospiro-monoansa derivatives (2c) and (2d). It is shown by 31P NMR spectroscopy on addition of a chiral solvating agent (CSA) that both the di-monospiro (2a) and di-monoansa (2b) derivatives are racemates, as expected, whereas no splitting of NMR signals occurred on addition of CSA to solutions of (2c) and (2d). It is found by X-ray crystallography that the two monospiro-monoansa spirane derivatives, (2c) and (2d), are meso diastereoisomers, which represent a new case of the stereochemistry of bis di-substituted cyclophosphazene derivatives of (1). It is also observed from the 31P NMR spectrum of the reaction mixture, supported by the yields of pure compounds, that formation of a spiro group is about 4.5 times more likely than that of an ansa moiety under the conditions of the reaction

    Assessing the fugitive emission of CH4 via migration along fault zones – Comparing potential shale gas basins to non-shale basins in the UK

    This study considered whether faults bounding hydrocarbon-bearing basins could be conduits for methane release to the atmosphere. Five basin bounding faults in the UK were considered: two which bounded potential shale gas basins; two faults that bounded coal basins; and one that bounded a basin with no known hydrocarbon deposits. In each basin, two mobile methane surveys were conducted, one along the surface expression of the basin bounding fault and one along a line of similar length but not intersecting the fault. All survey data was corrected for wind direction, the ambient CH4 concentration and the distance to the possible source. The survey design allowed for Analysis of Variance and this showed that there was a significant difference between the fault and control survey lines though a significant flux from the fault was not found in all basins and there was no apparent link to the presence, or absence, of hydrocarbons. As such, shale basins did not have a significantly different CH4 flux to non-shale hydrocarbon basins and non-hydrocarbon basins. These results could have implications for CH4 emissions from faults both in the UK and globally. Including all the corrected fault data, we estimate faults have an emissions factor of 11.5 ± 6.3 t CH4/km/yr, while the most conservative estimate of the flux from faults is 0.7 ± 0.3 t CH4/km/yr. The use of isotopes meant that at least one site of thermogenic flux from a fault could be identified. However, the total length of faults that penetrate through-basins and go from the surface to hydrocarbon reservoirs at depth in the UK is not known; as such, the emissions factor could not be multiplied by an activity level to estimate a total UK CH4 flux

    Sticky stuff : redefining bedform prediction in modern and ancient environments

Paterson was funded by the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS).The dimensions and dynamics of subaqueous bedforms are well known for cohesionless sediments. However, the effect of physical cohesion imparted by cohesive clay within mixed sand-mud substrates has not been examined, despite its recognized influence on sediment stability. Here we present a series of controlled laboratory experiments to establish the influence of substrate clay content on subaqueous bedform dynamics within mixtures of sand and clay exposed to unidirectional flow. The results show that bedform dimensions and steepness decrease linearly with clay content, and comparison with existing predictors of bedform dimensions, established within cohesionless sediments, reveals significant over-prediction of bedform size for all but the lowermost clay contents examined. The profound effect substrate clay content has on bedform dimensions has a number of important implications for interpretation in a range of modern and ancient environments, including reduced roughness and bedform heights in estuarine systems and the often cited lack of large dune cross-sets in turbidites. The results therefore offer a step change in our understanding of bedform formation and dynamics in these, and many other, sedimentary environments.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Spin operator matrix elements in the superintegrable chiral Potts quantum chain

    We derive spin operator matrix elements between general eigenstates of the superintegrable Z_N-symmetric chiral Potts quantum chain of finite length. Our starting point is the extended Onsager algebra recently proposed by R.Baxter. For each pair of spaces (Onsager sectors) of the irreducible representations of the Onsager algebra, we calculate the spin matrix elements between the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian of the quantum chain in factorized form, up to an overall scalar factor. This factor is known for the ground state Onsager sectors. For the matrix elements between the ground states of these sectors we perform the thermodynamic limit and obtain the formula for the order parameters. For the Ising quantum chain in a transverse field (N=2 case) the factorized form for the matrix elements coincides with the corresponding expressions obtained recently by the Separation of Variables Method.Comment: 24 pages, 1 figur

    HiQuake: The Human-Induced Earthquake Database

    HiQuake—The Human‐Induced Earthquake Database is the most complete database of anthropogenic projects proposed, on scientific grounds, to have induced earthquake sequences. It is freely available to download from the website given in Data and Resources. At the time this article was written, HiQuake contained ∼730∼730 anthropogenic projects proposed to have induced earthquakes, as well as associated project‐related and seismic data. The most commonly reported anthropogenic activities proposed to have induced earthquakes are mining and water reservoir impoundment. In recent years, the number of earthquake sequences proposed to have been induced by fluid‐injection activities has grown. The most commonly reported maximum observed magnitude in an induced earthquake sequence is 3≤MMAX<43≤MMAX<4 . The largest earthquake in HiQuake proposed to have been induced had a magnitude of MwMw 7.9 and occurred in China. Such large earthquakes release mostly stress of natural tectonic origin, but are conceivably triggered by small anthropogenic stress changes. The data in HiQuake are of variable quality because they are drawn from publications that span almost a century. We estimate underreporting to be ∼30%∼30% for M∼4M∼4 events, ∼60%∼60% for M∼3M∼3 events, and ∼90%∼90% for M∼2M∼2 events. The degree of certitude that the given earthquake sequences were anthropogenically induced is variable. HiQuake includes all earthquake sequences proposed on scientific grounds to have been human induced without regard to the strength of the case made. HiQuake is offered freely as a resource to interested parties, and judging the reliability of any particular case is the responsibility of the database user. HiQuake will be routinely updated to correct errors, update existing entries, and add new entries. It has the potential to help improve our understanding of induced earthquakes and to manage their impact on society

    Some remarks on a generalization of the superintegrable chiral Potts model

    The spontaneous magnetization of a two-dimensional lattice model can be expressed in terms of the partition function WW of a system with fixed boundary spins and an extra weight dependent on the value of a particular central spin. For the superintegrable case of the chiral Potts model with cylindrical boundary conditions, W can be expressed in terms of reduced hamiltonians H and a central spin operator S. We conjectured in a previous paper that W can be written as a determinant, similar to that of the Ising model. Here we generalize this conjecture to any Hamiltonians that satisfy a more general Onsager algebra, and give a conjecture for the elements of S.Comment: 18 pages, one figur
