Arrangement for four-part chorus and piano of Sir John Frederick Bridge\u27s The Cradle of Christ. The lyrics are taken from a thirteenth century Latin hymn by Jacopone da Todi, translated in 1866 by Rev. Dr. John Mason Neale. The work was composed for the 1894 Hereford Musical Festival, and was dedicated to Rev. George Prothero, the Sub-dean of Westminster Abbey. Non-Gaussian velocity distributions - The effect on virial mass estimates of galaxy groups
We present a study of 9 galaxy groups with evidence for non-Gaussianity in
their velocity distributions out to 4R200. This sample is taken from 57 groups
selected from the 2PIGG catalog of galaxy groups. Statistical analysis
indicates that non-Gaussian groups have masses significantly higher than
Gaussian groups. We also have found that all non-Gaussian systems seem to be
composed of multiple velocity modes. Besides, our results indicate that
multimodal groups should be considered as a set of individual units with their
own properties. In particular, we have found that the mass distribution of such
units are similar to that of Gaussian groups. Our results reinforce the idea of
non-Gaussian systems as complex structures in the phase space, likely
corresponding to secondary infall aggregations at a stage before virialization.
The understanding of these objects is relevant for cosmological studies using

Germline DNA Repair Gene Mutations in Young-onset Prostate Cancer Cases in the UK: Evidence for a More Extensive Genetic Panel
Background
Rare germline mutations in DNA repair genes are associated with prostate cancer (PCa) predisposition and prognosis.
Objective
To quantify the frequency of germline DNA repair gene mutations in UK PCa cases and controls, in order to more comprehensively evaluate the contribution of individual genes to overall PCa risk and likelihood of aggressive disease.
Design, setting, and participants
We sequenced 167 DNA repair and eight PCa candidate genes in a UK-based cohort of 1281 young-onset PCa cases (diagnosed at ≤60 yr) and 1160 selected controls.
Outcome measurements and statistical analysis
Gene-level SKAT-O and gene-set adaptive combination of p values (ADA) analyses were performed separately for cases versus controls, and aggressive (Gleason score ≥8, n = 201) versus nonaggressive (Gleason score ≤7, n = 1048) cases.
Results and limitations
We identified 233 unique protein truncating variants (PTVs) with minor allele frequency <0.5% in controls in 97 genes. The total proportion of PTV carriers was higher in cases than in controls (15% vs 12%, odds ratio [OR] = 1.29, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01–1.64, p = 0.036). Gene-level analyses selected NBN (pSKAT-O = 2.4 × 10−4) for overall risk and XPC (pSKAT-O = 1.6 × 10−4) for aggressive disease, both at candidate-level significance (p < 3.1 × 10−4 and p < 3.4 × 10−4, respectively). Gene-set analysis identified a subset of 20 genes associated with increased PCa risk (OR = 3.2, 95% CI 2.1–4.8, pADA = 4.1 × 10−3) and four genes that increased risk of aggressive disease (OR = 11.2, 95% CI 4.6–27.7, pADA = 5.6 × 10−3), three of which overlap the predisposition gene set.
Conclusions
The union of the gene-level and gene-set-level analyses identified 23 unique DNA repair genes associated with PCa predisposition or risk of aggressive disease. These findings will help facilitate the development of a PCa-specific sequencing panel with both predictive and prognostic potential.

Elucidating novel disease mechanisms in severe asthma
Corticosteroids are broadly active and potent anti-inflammatory agents that, despite the introduction of biologics, remain as the mainstay therapy for many chronic inflammatory diseases, including inflammatory bowel diseases, nephrotic syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. Significantly, there are cohorts of these patients with poor sensitivity to steroid treatment even with high doses, which can lead to many iatrogenic side effects. The dose-limiting toxicity of corticosteroids, and the lack of effective therapeutic alternatives, leads to substantial excess morbidity and healthcare expenditure. We have developed novel murine models of respiratory infection-induced, severe, steroid-resistant asthma that recapitulate the hallmark features of the human disease. These models can be used to elucidate novel disease mechanisms and identify new therapeutic targets in severe asthma. Hypothesis-driven studies can elucidate the roles of specific factors and pathways. Alternatively, 'Omics approaches can be used to rapidly generate new targets. Similar approaches can be used in other diseases
Star Formation in the Milky Way and Nearby Galaxies
We review progress over the past decade in observations of large-scale star
formation, with a focus on the interface between extragalactic and Galactic
studies. Methods of measuring gas contents and star formation rates are
discussed, and updated prescriptions for calculating star formation rates are
provided. We review relations between star formation and gas on scales ranging

Social group size affects Mycobacterium bovis infection in European badgers (Meles meles)
1. In most social animals, the prevalence of directly transmitted pathogens increases in larger groups and at higher population densities. Such patterns are predicted by models of Mycobacterium bovis infection in European badgers (Meles meles). 2. We investigated the relationship between badger abundance and M. bovis prevalence, using data on 2696 adult badgers in 10 populations sampled at the start of the Randomized Badger Culling Trial. 3. M. bovis prevalence was consistently higher at low badger densities and in small social groups. M. bovis prevalence was also higher among badgers whose genetic profiles suggested that they had immigrated into their assigned social groups. 4. The association between high M. bovis prevalence and small badger group size appeared not to have been caused by previous small-scale culling in study areas, which had been suspended, on average, 5 years before the start of the current study. 5. The observed pattern of prevalence might occur through badgers in smaller groups interacting more frequently with members of neighbouring groups; detailed behavioural data are needed to test this hypothesis. Likewise, longitudinal data are needed to determine whether the size of infected groups might be suppressed by disease-related mortality. 6. Although M. bovis prevalence was lower at high population densities, the absolute number of infected badgers was higher. However, this does not necessarily mean that the risk of M. bovis transmission to cattle is highest at high badger densities, since transmission risk depends on badger behaviour as well as on badger density
Discovery and Validation of a New Class of Small Molecule Toll-Like Receptor 4 (TLR4) Inhibitors
Many inflammatory diseases may be linked to pathologically elevated signaling via the receptor for lipopolysaccharide (LPS), toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). There has thus been great interest in the discovery of TLR4 inhibitors as potential anti-inflammatory agents. Recently, the structure of TLR4 bound to the inhibitor E5564 was solved, raising the possibility that novel TLR4 inhibitors that target the E5564-binding domain could be designed. We utilized a similarity search algorithm in conjunction with a limited screening approach of small molecule libraries to identify compounds that bind to the E5564 site and inhibit TLR4. Our lead compound, C34, is a 2-acetamidopyranoside (MW 389) with the formula C17H27NO9, which inhibited TLR4 in enterocytes and macrophages in vitro, and reduced systemic inflammation in mouse models of endotoxemia and necrotizing enterocolitis. Molecular docking of C34 to the hydrophobic internal pocket of the TLR4 co-receptor MD-2 demonstrated a tight fit, embedding the pyran ring deep inside the pocket. Strikingly, C34 inhibited LPS signaling ex-vivo in human ileum that was resected from infants with necrotizing enterocolitis. These findings identify C34 and the β-anomeric cyclohexyl analog C35 as novel leads for small molecule TLR4 inhibitors that have potential therapeutic benefit for TLR4-mediated inflammatory diseases. © 2013 Neal et al
A reliability-aware chance-constrained battery sizing method for island microgrid
Island Microgrids can coordinate local energy resources, provide post-fault reliability improvements for local customers, and aggregate local power and energy resources to offer services to the wider system. A crucial component of an Island Microgrid is the battery energy storage system, which can manage local imbalances, alleviate constraints, and improve reliability by enabling post-fault islanding. A planning and sizing method is required to quantify and maximize the benefits of battery energy storage while avoiding over-investment and under-utilization. This paper combines comprehensive reliability assessment with chance-constrained convex optimization, via second-order cone programming, to optimally size energy storage within an Island Microgrid. Chance constraints are applied to the battery state-of-charge to avoid sizing the energy storage to accommodate extreme cases of uncertainty, avoiding uneconomic investment. The probability of reaching a state-of-charge constraint also indicates the likelihood that the battery energy storage system will be unable to facilitate island operation in the event of an outage, which affects the Island Microgrid reliability. The method is demonstrated on a real Austrian distribution network as part of the MERLON project. Results illustrate that an optimal trade-off can be identified between system reliability and operating cost when the probability of violating the chance constraints is 4.8%
Confirmation of low genetic diversity and multiple breeding females in a social group of Eurasian badgers from microsatellite and field data
The Eurasian badger (
Meles meles
) is a facultatively social carnivore that shows only rudimentary
co-operative behaviour and a poorly defined social hierarchy. Behavioural evidence
and limited genetic data have suggested that more than one female may breed in a
social group. We combine pregnancy detection by ultrasound and microsatellite locus
scores from a well-studied badger population from Wytham Woods, Oxfordshire, UK, to
demonstrate that multiple females reproduce within a social group. We found that at least
three of seven potential mothers reproduced in a group that contained 11 reproductive age
females and nine offspring. Twelve primers showed variability across the species range and only five of these were variable in Wytham. The microsatellites showed a reduced repeat number, a significantly higher number of nonperfect repeats, and moderate heterozygosity
levels in Wytham. The high frequency of imperfect repeats and demographic phenomena might be responsible for the reduced levels of variability observed in the badger
Mating system of the Eurasian badger, Meles meles, in a high density population
Badgers are facultatively social, forming large groups at high density. Group-living appears
to have high reproductive costs for females, and may lead to increased levels of inbreeding.
The extent of female competition for reproduction has been estimated from field data, but
knowledge of male reproductive success and the extent of extra-group paternity remains
limited. Combining field data with genetic data (16 microsatellite loci), we studied the mating
system of 10 badger social groups across 14 years in a high-density population. From 923
badgers, including 425 cubs, we were able to assign maternity to 307 cubs, with both parents
assigned to 199 cubs (47%) with 80% confidence, and 14% with 95% confidence. Age had a
significant effect on the probability of reproduction, seemingly as a result of a deficit of
individuals aged two years and greater than eight years attaining parentage. We estimate
that approximately 30% of the female population successfully reproduced in any given
year, with a similar proportion of the male population gaining paternity across the same
area. While it was known there was a cost to female reproduction in high density populations,
it appears that males suffer similar, but not greater, costs. Roughly half of assigned paternity
was attributed to extra-group males, the majority of which were from neighbouring social
groups. Few successful matings occurred between individuals born in the same social group
(22%). The high rate of extra-group mating, previously unquantified, may help reduce inbreeding,
potentially making philopatry a less costly strategy
