Verkenning van economische en foktechnische consequenties van georganiseerde fokkerij voor de biologische varkenshouderij
An explorative study has been carried out to review the breeding and economic related consequences of sow replacement systems for the organic pig farming sector. In the longer term, the use of maiden gilts from the conventional pig breeding is not expected to be tenable, and for this reason 'organic' breeding is required. The cost of maiden 'organic' gilts is calculated as approximately €410. Consequently, the cost increase compared to supply of 'conventional' gilts amounts to €7 per piglet and 12 cents per kg slaughter weight. Further studies in breeds appropriate for organic farming, structure of the breeding operations, collaboration, and the adoption of an international approach are required
