Variations of model checking
The logic ATCTL is a convenient logic to specify properties with actions and real-time. It is intended as a property language for Lightweight UML models [12], which consist mainly of simplified class diagrams and statecharts. ATCTL combines two known extensions of CTL, namely ACTL and TCTL. The reason to extend CTL with both actions and real time is that in LUML stateĀætransition diagrams, we specify states, actions and real time, and our properties refer to all of these elements. The analyst therefore needs a property language that contains constructs for all these elements. ATCTL can be reduced to ACTL as well as to TCTL, and therefore also to CTL. This gives us a choice of tools for model checking; we have used is Kronos [13], a TCTL model checker
Quantum Mechanics as a Simple Generalization of Classical Mechanics
A motivation is given for expressing classical mechanics in terms of diagonal
projection matrices and diagonal density matrices. Then quantum mechanics is
seen to be a simple generalization in which one replaces the diagonal real
matrices with suitable Hermitian matrices.Comment: 9 pages, LaTe
(4+2)-cycloaddition of nitroalkenes with ynamines; formation of a 4H-1,2-oxazine 2-oxide derivative
The formation of a thermally unstable (4+2)-cycloadduct, a 4H-1,2-oxazine 2-oxide derivative ( ), from the reaction of 1-nitrocyclopentene with 1-phenyl-2-(1-pyrrolidinyl)acetylene has been proven by the structure elucidation of isoxazole derivative which results from thermal rearrangement and by the structure determination of the 1,3-dipolar adducts of with electron-deficient acetylenes
Dependability checking with StoCharts: Is train radio reliable enough for trains?
Performance, dependability and quality of service (QoS) are prime aspects of the UML modelling domain. To capture these aspects effectively in the design phase, we have recently proposed STOCHARTS, a conservative extension of UML statechart diagrams. In this paper, we apply the STOCHART formalism to a safety critical design problem. We model a part of the European Train Control System specification, focusing on the risks of wireless communication failures in future high-speed cross-European trains. Stochastic model checking with the model checker PROVER enables us to derive constraints under which the central quality requirements are satisfied by the STOCHART model. The paper illustrates the flexibility and maturity of STOCHARTS to model real problems in safety critical system design
Avian piscivores: basis for policy.
In Britain, many birds eat fish in fresh waters but only three species, cormorant, red-breasted merganser and goosander, are commonly perceived to present serious problems for freshwater fisheries. Complaints are mainly that cormorants eat large fish and that all three bird species eat so many juvenile fish, that there are subsequently fewer fish to be harvested or angled, but also
that persistent predation by birds changes fish behaviour so that they are less 'catchable'.
To this end, this report reviews existing information on the current status, foraging ecology, and population biology
of the three bird species as background to their potential impact on fisheries. Discusses fish population dynamics within the context of predation effects. Reviews existing experimental evidence for impacts on fish populations and fisheries; and describes current legislation, discusses potential criteria for serious damage to a fishery, and
suggests ways forward for NRA policy and research
Chemistry of pyrrolizines; reactions with cyanogen bromide and trifluoroacetic anhydride
Interaction of the pyrrolizine 3 with cyanogen bromide in a tetrahydrofuran/water mixture affords addition to the enamine double bond with formation of 5 which can be aromatized to 6 by silica gel. Reaction of 6 with cyanogen bromide in the same solvent mixture yields the indoline 8a which structure is proved in a chemical way by conversion of the product into the aldehyde 8d. The different reaction pathway is discussed in terms of steric hindrance by the ester groups. Treatment of 6 with trifluoroacetic anhydride gives the trifluoroacetylated compound 11. Removal of the sterically hindered ester groups in 6, with acetic acid in quinoline at 200Ā°, is accompanied by the simultaneous decarboxylation to yield the pyrrolo[1,2-a]indole 1
Low-Energy Spin Dynamics of CuO Chains in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x)
We study the spin fluctuation dynamics of Cu-O chains in the oxygen deficient
planes of YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x). The chains are described by a model including
antiferromagnetic interactions between the spins and Kondo-like scattering of
the oxygen holes by the copper spins. There are incommensurate spin
fluctuations along the direction of the chains. The dynamic structure factor of
this system is qualitatively different from that of a quasi one-dimensional
localized antiferromagnet due to the presence of itinerant holes. We compute
the dynamic structure factor that could be measured in neutron scattering
experiments.Comment: 2 pages, 2 eps figures, LT22 proceedings, phbauth style file include
A comparative reliability analysis of ETCS train radio communications
StoCharts have been proposed as a UML statechart extension for performance and dependability evaluation, and were applied in the context of train radio reliability assessment to show the principal tractability of realistic cases with this approach. In this paper, we extend on this bare feasibility result in two important directions. First, we sketch the cornerstones of a mechanizable translation of StoCharts to MoDeST. The latter is a process algebra-based formalism supported by the Motor/Mƶbius tool tandem. Second, we exploit this translation for a detailed analysis of the train radio case study
Twin-photon techniques for photo-detector calibration
The aim of this review paper is to enlighten some recent progresses in
quantum optical metrology in the part of quantum efficiency measurements of
photo-detectors performed with bi-photon states. The intrinsic correlated
nature of entangled photons from Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion
phenomenon has opened wide horizons to a new approach for the absolute
measurement of photo-detector quantum efficiency, outgoing the requirement for
conventional standards of optical radiation; in particular the simultaneous
feature of the creation of conjugated photons led to a well known technique of
coincidence measurement, deeply understood and implemented for standard uses.
On the other hand, based on manipulation of entanglement developed for Quantum
Information protocols implementations, a new method has been proposed for
quantum efficiency measurement, exploiting polarisation entanglement in
addition to energy-momentum and time ones, that is based on conditioned
polarisation state manipulation. In this review, after a general discussion on
absolute photo-detector calibration, we compare these different methods, in
order to give an accurate operational sketch of the absolute quantum efficiency
measurement state of the art
