Not AvailableLivelihood assessment was done for cassava and paddy farmers of Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu. A sample of 60 cassava and 60 paddy growers were selected using snow ball sampling technique and data were collected using a well-structured interview schedule which was supplemented through focus group discussions. Index was worked out for all the capitals for assessing the livelihood of farmers. Of the five livelihood capitals, the index for physical and natural capital was higher followed by the social, financial and human index. The overall rural sustainable livelihood index for paddy farmers was 62 which was higher than the cassava farmers (52). Significant differences were observed between the paddy and cassava farmers in farming experience, farm size, annual income, training undergone and family labour involvement. Financial support may be provided through the banks to improve the financial capital of the farmers. Not AvailableThis paper attempts to explore the status of tuber crops cultivation with regard to area, production and productivity across countries and exports of cassava and sweet potatoes from India. The result indicated that among various tuber crops, potatoes were vastly cultivated and consumed by Europe and Asia. At the same time, cassava and sweet potatoes were generally grown and consumed by Africa and Asia. In India, cassava and sweet potatoes are the most important tuber crops due to their large scale and varied uses. The growth rate analysis showed that the area under cassava (-1.38 percent) and sweet potatoes (-0.70 percent) as a whole showed a declining trend in India due to various agro-climatic conditions and socioeconomic constraints. In the context of climate change and considering the importance of root and tuber crops for food and nutritional security, it would be a smart move to bring more area under tuber crops cultivation to achieve 'self-reliance' and ' Make in India Mission'.Not Availabl

A sample of 60 sweet potato growers and 60 paddy growers were selected using snow ball sampling and data were collected using PRA tools, interview schedule and focus group discussions during July to December 2017. The sustainable livelihood index was worked out using the DFID methodology for all the capitals. Sweet potato growers realized 39 per cent higher net profit than the paddy growers. The overall human index was 46 for sweet potato growers and 52 for paddy growers. The overall physical capital index was more for sweet potato growers (72) as compared to paddy growers (70). Social capital index was similar to both the growers. The overall financial index was 40 for paddy growers and 36 for sweet potato growers.
