    A 5 item version of the Compliance Questionnaire for Rheumatology (CQR5) successfully identifies low adherence to DMARDs

To date, the Compliance Questionnaire for Rheumatology (CQR) is the only self-report adherence measure created specifically for and validated in rheumatic diseases. However, the factor structure of the CQR has not been reported and it can be considered lengthy at 19 items. The aim of this study was to test the factor structure of the CQR and reduce the number of items whilst retaining robust explanation of non-adherence to DMARDs. Such a reduction would increase the clinical utility of the scale, to identify patients with sub-optimal adherence to DMARDs in the clinic as well as for research purposes.Peer reviewe

The broad lines from the type 1 nucleus can be scattered and be seen in the polarized flux spectrum, provided the geometry is correct. Whether the mechanism is electron or dust scattering has been a question of some debate. Since dust would normally have a low scattering efficiency in the infrared, near-IR spectropolarimetry should help in determing the nature of the scatterers. To this end we present the first near-IR spectropolarimetry of NGC 1068 a "Seyfert 2" galaxy in which polarized broad lines have been observed at optical wavelengths

    Subsurface microstructural changes in a cast heat resisting alloy caused by high temperature corrosion

    A cast HP ModNb alloy (Fe–25Cr–35Ni–1Nb, wt.%) was oxidised and carburised in CO–CO2 corresponding to aC = 0.1 and pO2 = 3 1016 atm at 1080 C. Formation of an external, chromium-rich oxide scale led to depletion of this metal in a deep alloy subsurface zone. Within that zone, secondary chromium-rich carbides dissolved, primary carbides oxidised, solute silicon and aluminium internally oxidised, and extensive porosity developed. Pore volumes correspond to the difference between metal loss by scaling and metal displacement by internal oxidation, assuming the scale–metal interface to be fixed. The pores are concluded to be Kirkendall void

    Automated identification of Fos expression

    The concentration of Fos, a protein encoded by the immediate-early gene c-fos, provides a measure of synaptic activity that may not parallel the electrical activity of neurons. Such a measure is important for the difficult problem of identifying dynamic properties of neuronal circuitries activated by a variety of stimuli and behaviours. We employ two-stage statistical pattern recognition to identify cellular nuclei that express Fos in two-dimensional sections of rat forebrain after administration of antipsychotic drugs. In stage one, we distinguish dark-stained candidate nuclei from image background by a thresholding algorithm and record size and shape measurements of these objects. In stage two, we compare performance of linear and quadratic discriminants, nearest-neighbour and artificial neural network classifiers that employ functions of these measurements to label candidate objects as either Fos nuclei, two touching Fos nuclei or irrelevant background material. New images of neighbouring brain tissue serve as test sets to assess generalizability of the best derived classification rule, as determined by lowest cross-validation misclassification rate. Three experts, two internal and one external, compare manual and automated results for accuracy assessment. Analyses of a subset of images on two separate occasions provide quantitative measures of inter- and intra-expert consistency. We conclude that our automated procedure yields results that compare favourably with those of the experts and thus has potential to remove much of the tedium, subjectivity and irreproducibility of current Fos identification methods in digital microscopy

    Water vapour effects of cyclic oxidation on Fe-Cr alloys

    Fe-Cr alloys (Cr: 9-30 wt%) were subjected to cyclic oxidation in Ar-20%O2, Ar-20%O2-5%H2O and Ar-10%H2-5%H2O (partial pressure of oxygen, pO2 = 1.1 ¥ 10-16atm). Oxidation weight change measurement showed that in general, increasing Cr content reduced the oxidation rate. At Cr 25%, the weight gain became very low due to formation of Cr2O3 layer. Adding 5%H2O to Ar-20%O2 accelerated the oxidation rate of alloys with Cr < 20%. However, this accelerating effect did not appear in high chromium content alloys. XRD analysis showed that for alloys with Cr < 20%, wustite and spinel were formed at low pO2, while at high pO2, hematite, iron oxide and spinel were formed. For high Cr content alloy only Cr2O3 was detected. Cross-section analysis showed that the spinel was formed by internal oxidation. The thickness and size of this internal oxide zone increased with increasing Cr content. A dense chromia layer was observed when the Cr content was above 25%. The oxides scales formed in water vapour were more porous and less compact than the scale formed in dry oxygen. The accelerating effect of water vapour on Fe-Cr oxidation is discussed in terms of gas-solid interactions

    A generalized model for fuel channel bore estimation in AGR cores

    One of the major life-limiting factors of an Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) nuclear power station is the graphite core as it cannot be repaired or replaced and therefore detailed information about the health of the core is vital for continued safe operation. The graphite bricks that comprise the core experience gradual degradation during operation as a result of irradiation. Routine physical inspection of the graphite core fuel channels is performed by specialist inspection equipment during outages every 12 months to 3 years. It has also been shown to be advantageous to supplement this periodic inspection information with analysis of operational data which can provide additional insights into the core health. One such approach is through the use of online monitoring data called the Fuel Grab Load Trace (FGLT). An FGLT is a measure of the perceived load of the fuel assembly with contributions from aerodynamic forces and frictional forces, which is related to bore diameter. This paper describes enhancements to existing analysis of FGLT data which, to date, has focussed solely on using data from a single reactor at a time to build bore estimation models, by considering data from multiple reactors to produce a generalised model of bore estimation. This paper initially describes the process of producing a bore estimation from an FGLT by isolating the contribution that relates to the fuel channel bore and then discusses the limitations with the existing bore estimation model. Improvements are then proposed for the bore estimation model and a detailed assessment is undertaken to understand the effect of each of these proposed improvements. In addition, the effect of introducing non-linear regression models to further enhance the bore estimation is explored. The existing model is trained on data from one reactor in the UK and therefore the results produced from it are only applicable to this reactor. However, out of the remaining 13 nuclear reactors currently in operation, 3 also have a similar construction to the reactor the model is trained on, and these should all produce similar FGLT data. Therefore, a generalised model is proposed that produces bore estimations for four AGRs station’s reactors, compared with one previously. It is shown that this approach offers an improved overall bore estimation model

    Gallavotti-Cohen theorem, Chaotic Hypothesis and the zero-noise limit

    The Fluctuation Relation for a stationary state, kept at constant energy by a deterministic thermostat - the Gallavotti-Cohen Theorem -- relies on the ergodic properties of the system considered. We show that when perturbed by an energy-conserving random noise, the relation follows trivially for any system at finite noise amplitude. The time needed to achieve stationarity may stay finite as the noise tends to zero, or it may diverge. In the former case the Gallavotti-Cohen result is recovered, while in the latter case, the crossover time may be computed from the action of `instanton' orbits that bridge attractors and repellors. We suggest that the `Chaotic Hypothesis' of Gallavotti can thus be reformulated as a matter of stochastic stability of the measure in trajectory space. In this form this hypothesis may be directly tested

    Evidence for a Black Hole Remnant in the Type IIL Supernova 1979C

    We present an analysis of archival X-ray observations of the Type IIL supernova SN 1979C. We find that its X-ray luminosity is remarkably constant at (6.5+/-0.1) x 10^38 erg/s over a period of 12 years between 1995 and 2007. The high and steady luminosity is considered as possible evidence for a stellar-mass (~ 5-10Msun) black hole accreting material from either a supernova fallback disk or from a binary companion, or possibly from emission from a central pulsar wind nebula. We find that the bright and steady X-ray light curve is not consistent with either a model for a supernova powered by magnetic braking of a rapidly rotating magnetar, or a model where the blast wave is expanding into a dense circumstellar wind.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, to appear in New Astronom

    Fluctuation Relations for Diffusion Processes

    The paper presents a unified approach to different fluctuation relations for classical nonequilibrium dynamics described by diffusion processes. Such relations compare the statistics of fluctuations of the entropy production or work in the original process to the similar statistics in the time-reversed process. The origin of a variety of fluctuation relations is traced to the use of different time reversals. It is also shown how the application of the presented approach to the tangent process describing the joint evolution of infinitesimally close trajectories of the original process leads to a multiplicative extension of the fluctuation relations.Comment: 38 page
