Effects of Residue Background Events in Direct Dark Matter Detection Experiments on the Determination of the WIMP Mass
In the earlier work on the development of a model-independent data analysis
method for determining the mass of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs)
by using measured recoil energies from direct Dark Matter detection experiments
directly, it was assumed that the analyzed data sets are background-free, i.e.,
all events are WIMP signals. In this article, as a more realistic study, we
take into account a fraction of possible residue background events, which pass
all discrimination criteria and then mix with other real WIMP-induced events in
our data sets. Our simulations show that, for the determination of the WIMP
mass, the maximal acceptable fraction of residue background events in the
analyzed data sets of O(50) total events is ~20%, for background windows of the
entire experimental possible energy ranges, or in low energy ranges; while, for
background windows in relatively higher energy ranges, this maximal acceptable
fraction of residue background events can not be larger than ~10%. For a WIMP
mass of 100 GeV with 20% background events in the windows of the entire
experimental possible energy ranges, the reconstructed WIMP mass and the
1-sigma statistical uncertainty are ~97 GeV^{+61%}_{-35%} (~94

Spin-3/2 Nucleon and Delta Baryons in Lattice QCD
We present first results for masses of spin-3/2 N and Delta baryons in
lattice QCD using Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) fermions. Spin-3/2
interpolating fields providing overlap with both spin-3/2 and spin-1/2 states
are considered. In the isospin-1/2 sector, we observe, after appropriate spin
and parity projection, a strong signal for the J^P=3/2^- state together with a
weak but discernible signal for the 3/2^+ state with a mass splitting near that
observed experimentally. We also find good agreement between the 1/2^+/- masses
and earlier nucleon mass simulations with the standard spin-1/2 interpolating
field. For the isospin-3/2 Delta states, clear mass splittings are observed
between the various 1/2^+/- and 3/2^+/- channels, with the calculated level
orderings in good agreement with those observed empirically.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 2 table
Using Nonlinear Response to Estimate the Strength of an Elastic Network
Disordered networks of fragile elastic elements have been proposed as a model
of inner porous regions of large bones [Gunaratne et.al., cond-mat/0009221,
http://xyz.lanl.gov]. It is shown that the ratio of responses of such
a network to static and periodic strain can be used to estimate its ultimate
(or breaking) stress. Since bone fracture in older adults results from the
weakening of porous bone, we discuss the possibility of using as a
non-invasive diagnostic of osteoporotic bone.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Direct Instantons in QCD Nucleon Sum Rules
We study the role of direct (i.e. small-scale) instantons in QCD correlation
functions for the nucleon. They generate sizeable, nonperturbative corrections
to the conventional operator product expansion, which improve the quality of
both QCD nucleon sum rules and cure the long-standing stability problem, in

Strength Reduction in Electrical and Elastic Networks
Particular aspects of problems ranging from dielectric breakdown to metal
insu- lator transition can be studied using electrical o elastic networks. We
present an expression for the mean breakdown strength of such networks.First,
we intro- duce a method to evaluate the redistribution of current due to the
removal of a finite number of elements from a hyper-cubic network of
conducatances.It is used to determine the reduction of breakdown strength due
to a fracture of size .Numerical analysis is used to show that the
analogous reduction due to random removal of elements from electrical and
elastic networks follow a similar form.One possible application, namely the use

Wavelets and graph -algebras
Here we give an overview on the connection between wavelet theory and
representation theory for graph -algebras, including the higher-rank
graph -algebras of A. Kumjian and D. Pask. Many authors have studied
different aspects of this connection over the last 20 years, and we begin this
paper with a survey of the known results. We then discuss several new ways to
generalize these results and obtain wavelets associated to representations of
higher-rank graphs. In \cite{FGKP}, we introduced the "cubical wavelets"
associated to a higher-rank graph. Here, we generalize this construction to
build wavelets of arbitrary shapes. We also present a different but related
construction of wavelets associated to a higher-rank graph, which we anticipate
will have applications to traffic analysis on networks. Finally, we generalize
the spectral graph wavelets of \cite{hammond} to higher-rank graphs, giving a
third family of wavelets associated to higher-rank graphs
Extragalactic Sources for Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Nuclei
In this article we examine the hypothesis that the highest energy cosmic rays
are complex nuclei from extragalactic sources. Under reasonable physical
assumptions, we show that the nearby metally rich starburst galaxies (M82 and
NGC 253) can produce all the events observed above the ankle. This requires
diffusion of particles below eV in extragalactic magnetic fields nG. Above eV, the model predicts the presence of
significant fluxes of medium mass and heavy nuclei with small rate of change of
composition. Notwithstanding, the most salient feature of the
starburst-hypothesis is a slight anisotropy induced by iron debris just before

Intermediate inflation in Gauss-Bonnet braneworld
In this article we study an intermediate inflationary universe models using
the Gauss-Bonnet brane. General conditions required for these models to be
realizable are derived and discussed. We use recent astronomical observations

Poincare Invariant Algebra From Instant to Light-Front Quantization
We present the Poincare algebra interpolating between instant and light-front
time quantizations. The angular momentum operators satisfying SU(2) algebra are
constructed in an arbitrary interpolation angle and shown to be identical to
the ordinary angular momentum and Leutwyler-Stern angular momentum in the
instant and light-front quantization limits, respectively. The exchange of the
dynamical role between the transverse angular mometum and the boost operators

Only randomized and alternate allocated studies were included from the major electronic databases using the search terms "ligasure" and "haemorrhoids" Duration of operation, blood loss during operation, postoperative pain score, wound healing, in-hospital stay, time to return to normal activities and complications were assessed.\ud

The 11 trials contained a total of 1,046 patients; the largest study was based on 273 patients and two earlier studies were based on 34 patients. No significant gender mismatch between the groups was reported in any of the studies. The patients’ ages were similar between groups in the studies, as was disease severity. All 11 studies reported a shorter duration of the operation when using LigaSure compared to the conventional technique (p<0.001). The postoperative pain score (p=0.001) and blood loss during operation (p=0.001) were significantly reduced. After LigaSure haemorrhoidectomy wound healing (p=0.004) and the return to normal activities (p=0.001) were significantly faster than after conventional haemorrhoidectomy. However, the overall incidence of complications reported was not significantly different (p=0.056).\ud

LigaSure is an effective instrument for haemorrhoidectomy which results in less blood loss, quicker wound healing and earlier return to work.\u
