String Form Factors
We compute the cross section for scattering of light string probes by
randomly excited closed strings. For high energy probes, the cross section
factorizes and can be used to define effective form factors for the excited
targets. These form factors are well defined without the need for infinite
subtractions and contain information about the shape and size of typical
strings. For highly excited strings the elastic form factor can be written in
terms of the `plasma dispersion function', which describes charge screening in

Modelling the electric field applied to a tokamak
The vector potential for the Ohmic heating coil system of a tokamak is
obtained in semi-analytical form. Comparison is made to the potential of a
simple, finite solenoid. In the quasi-static limit, the time rate of change of
the potential determines the induced electromotive force through the

Exploring the psychology of suicidal ideation: A theory driven network analysis
Two leading theories within the field of suicide prevention are the interpersonal psychological theory of suicidal behaviour (IPT) and the integrated motivational-volitional (IMV) model. The IPT posits that suicidal thoughts emerge from high levels of perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness. The IMV model is a multivariate framework that conceptualizes defeat and entrapment as key drivers of suicide ideation. We applied network analysis to cross-sectional data collected as part of the Scottish Wellbeing Study, in which a nationally representative sample of 3508 young adults (18â34 years) completed a battery of psychological measures. Network analysis can help us to understand how the different theoretical components interact and how they relate to suicide ideation. Within a network that included only the core factors from both models, internal entrapment and perceived burdensomeness were most strongly related to suicide ideation. The core constructs defeat, external entrapment and thwarted belonginess were mainly related to other factors than suicide ideation. Within the network of all available psychological factors, 12 of the 20 factors were uniquely related to suicide ideation, with perceived burdensomeness, internal entrapment, depressive symptoms and history of suicide ideation explaining the most variance. None of the factors was isolated, and we identified four larger clusters: mental wellbeing, interpersonal needs, personality, and suicide-related factors. Overall, the results suggest that relationships between suicide ideation and psychological risk factors are complex, with some factors contributing direct risk, and others having indirect impact
Cosmological Applications of Gravitational Lensing
The last decade has seen an enormous increase of activity in the field of
gravitational lensing, mainly driven by improvements of observational
capabilities. I will review the basics of gravitational lens theory, just
enough to understand the rest of this contribution, and will then concentrate
on several of the main applications in cosmology. Cluster lensing, and weak

A Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology Can Transform Mental Health Research
For more than a century, research on psychopathology has focused on categorical diagnoses. Although this work has produced major discoveries, growing evidence points to the superiority of a dimensional approach to the science of mental illness. Here we outline one such dimensional systemâthe Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP)âthat is based on empirical patterns of co-occurrence among psychological symptoms. We highlight key ways in which this framework can advance mental-health research, and we provide some heuristics for using HiTOP to test theories of psychopathology. We then review emerging evidence that supports the value of a hierarchical, dimensional model of mental illness across diverse research areas in psychological science. These new data suggest that the HiTOP system has the potential to accelerate and improve research on mental-health problems as well as efforts to more effectively assess, prevent, and treat mental illness.FSW â Publicaties zonder aanstelling Universiteit Leide
Obesity, inflammation, and insulin resistance
White adipose tissue (WAT) is considered an endocrine organ. When present in excess, WAT can influence metabolism via biologically active molecules. Following unregulated production of such molecules, adipose tissue dysfunction results, contributing to complications associated with obesity. Previous studies have implicated pro- and anti-inflammatory substances in the regulation of inflammatory response and in the development of insulin resistance. In obese individuals, pro-inflammatory molecules produced by adipose tissue contribute to the development of insulin resistance and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. On the other hand, the molecules with anti-inflammatory action, that have been associated with the improvement of insulin sensitivity, have your decreased production. Imbalance of these substances contributes significantly to metabolic disorders found in obese individuals.
