Ferroelectricity in multiferroic magnetite Fe3O4 driven by noncentrosymmetric Fe2+/Fe3+ charge-ordering: First-principles study
By means of first-principles simulations, we unambiguously show that improper
ferroelectricity in magnetite in the low-temperature insulating phase is driven
by charge-ordering. An accurate comparison between monoclinic ferroelectric Cc
and paraelectric P2/c structures shows that the polarization arises because of
"shifts" of electronic charge between octahedral Fe sites, leading to a
non-centrosymmetric Fe2+/Fe3+ charge-ordered pattern. Our predicted values for
polarization, in good agreement with available experimental values, are
discussed in terms of point-charge dipoles located on selected Fe tetrahedra,
pointing to a manifest example of electronic ferroelectricity driven by charge
rearrangement.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Exploration of Finite 2D Square Grid by a Metamorphic Robotic System
We consider exploration of finite 2D square grid by a metamorphic robotic
system consisting of anonymous oblivious modules. The number of possible shapes
of a metamorphic robotic system grows as the number of modules increases. The
shape of the system serves as its memory and shows its functionality. We
consider the effect of global compass on the minimum number of modules
necessary to explore a finite 2D square grid. We show that if the modules agree
on the directions (north, south, east, and west), three modules are necessary
and sufficient for exploration from an arbitrary initial configuration,
otherwise five modules are necessary and sufficient for restricted initial
configurations
Theoretical investigation of magnetoelectric effects in Ba2CoGe2O7
A joint theoretical approach, combining macroscopic symmetry analysis with
microscopic methods (density functional theory and model cluster Hamiltonian),
is employed to shed light on magnetoelectricity in Ba2CoGe2O7. We show that the
recently reported experimental trend of polarization guided by magnetic field
can be predicted on the basis of phenomenological Landau theory. From the
microscopic side, Ba2CoGe2O7 emerges as a prototype of a class of
magnetoelectrics, where the cross coupling between magnetic and dipolar degrees
of freedom needs, as main ingredients, the on-site spin-orbit coupling and the
spin-dependent O p - Co d hybridization, along with structural constraints
related to the noncentrosymmetric structural symmetry and the peculiar
configuration of CoO4 tetrahedrons.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted for publicatio
Charge Ordering and Ferroelectricity in Half-doped Manganites
By means of density-functional simulations for half-doped manganites, such as
pseudocubic Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and bilayer PrCa2Mn2O7, we discuss the occurrence of
ferroelectricity and we explore its crucial relation to the crystal structure
and to peculiar charge/spin/orbital ordering effects. In pseudocubic
Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3, ferroelectricity is induced in the Zener polaron type
structure, where Mn ions are dimerized. In marked contrast, in bilayer
PrCa2Mn2O7, it is the displacements of apical oxygens bonded to either Mn3+ or
Mn4+ ions that play a key role in the rising of ferroelectricity. Importantly,
local dipoles due to apical oxygens are also intimately linked to charge and
orbital ordering patterns in MnO2 planes, which in turn contribute to
polarization. Finally, an important outcome of our work consists in proposing
Born effective charges as a valid mean to quantify charge disproportionation
effects, in terms of anisotropy and size of electronic clouds around Mn ions.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted for publicatio
Positions of Point-Nodes in Borocarbide Superconductor YNi2B2C
To determine the superconducting gap function of YNi2B2C, we calculate the
local density of states (LDOS) around a single vortex core with the use of
Eilenberger theory and the band structure calculated by local density
approximation assuming various gap structures with point-nodes at different
positions. We also calculate the angular-dependent heat capacity in the vortex
state on the basis of the Doppler-Shift method. Comparing our results with the
STM/STS experiment, the angular-dependent heat capacity and thermal
conductivity, we propose the gap-structure of YNi2B2C, which has the
point-nodes and gap minima along . Our gap-structure is consistent with
all results of angular-resolved experiments.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Non-Gaussianity in Cosmic Microwave Background Temperature Fluctuations from Cosmic (Super-)Strings
We compute analytically the small-scale temperature fluctuations of the
cosmic microwave background from cosmic (super-)strings and study the
dependence on the string intercommuting probability . We develop an
analytical model which describes the evolution of a string network and
calculate the numbers of string segments and kinks in a horizon volume. Then we
derive the probability distribution function (pdf) which takes account of
finite angular resolution of observation. The resultant pdf consists of a
Gaussian part due to frequent scatterings by long string segments and a
non-Gaussian tail due to close encounters with kinks. The dispersion of the
Gaussian part is reasonably consistent with that obtained by numerical
simulations by Fraisse et al.. On the other hand, the non-Gaussian tail
contains two phenomenological parameters which are determined by comparison
with the numerical results for P=1. Extrapolating the pdf to the cases with
, we predict that the non-Gaussian feature is suppressed for small .Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure, version accepted by JCA
Real Space Imaging of Spin Polarons in Zn Doped SrCu2(BO3)2
We report on the real space profile of spin polarons in the quasi
two-dimensional frustrated dimer spin system SrCu2(BO3)2 doped with 0.16% of
Zn. The 11B nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum exhibits 15 additional boron
sites near non-magnetic Zn impurities. With the help of exact diagonalizations
of finite clusters, we have deduced from the boron spectrum the distribution of
local magnetizations at the Cu sites with fine spatial resolution, providing
direct evidence for an extended spin polaron. The results are confronted with
those of other experiments performed on doped and undoped samples of
SrCu2(BO3)2.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, including supplemental materials. accepted for

X-ray Line Emission from the Hot Stellar Wind of theta 1 Ori C
We present a first emission line analysis of a high resolution X-ray spectrum
of the stellar wind of theta 1 Ori C obtained with the High Energy Transmission
grating Spectrometer onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectra are
resolved into a large number of emission lines from H- and He-like O, Ne, Mg,
Si, S, Ar and Fe ions. The He-like Fe XXV and Li-like Fe XXIV appear quite
strong indicating very hot emitting regions. From H/He flux ratios, as well as
from Fe He/Li emission measure ratios we deduce temperatures ranging from 0.5
to 6.1 x 10^7 K. The He-triplets are very sensitive to density as well. At
these temperatures the relative strengths of the intercombination and forbidden
lines indicate electron densities well above 10^12 cm^-3. The lines appear
significantly broadened from which we deduce a mean velocity of 770 km/s with a
spread between 400 and 2000 km/s. Along with results of the deduced emission
measure we conclude that the X-ray emission could originate in dense and hot
regions with a characteristic size of less then 4 x 10^10 cm.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
