Thermal activation energy of 3D vortex matter in NaFe1-xCoxAs (x=0.01, 0.03 and 0.07) single crystals
We report on the thermally activated flux flow dependency on the doping
dependent mixed state in NaFe1-xCoxAs (x=0.01, 0.03, and 0.07) crystals using
the magnetoresistivity in the case of B//c-axis and B//ab-plane. It was found
clearly that irrespective of the doping ratio, magnetoresistivity showed a
distinct tail just above the Tc, offset associated with the thermally activated
flux flow (TAFF) in our crystals. Furthermore, in TAFF region the temperature
dependence of the activation energy follows the relation U(T, B)=U_0 (B)
(1-T/T_c )^q with q=1.5 in all studied crystals. The magnetic field dependence
of the activation energy follows a power law of U_0 (B)~B^(-{\alpha}) where the
exponent {\alpha} is changed from a low value to a high value at a crossover
field of B=~2T, indicating the transition from collective to plastic pinning in
the crystals. Finally, it is suggested that the 3D vortex phase is the dominant
phase in the low-temperature region as compared to the TAFF region in our
series samples
An effective thermodynamic potential from the instanton with Polyakov-loop contributions
We derive an effective thermodynamic potential (Omega_eff) at finite
temperature (T>0) and zero quark-chemical potential (mu_R=0), using the
singular-gauge instanton solution and Matsubara formula for N_c=3 and N_f=2 in
the chiral limit. The momentum-dependent constituent-quark mass is also
obtained as a function of T, employing the Harrington-Shepard caloron solution
in the large-N_c limit. In addition, we take into account the imaginary quark
chemical potential mu_I = A_4, translated as the traced Polayakov-loop (Phi) as
an order parameter for the Z(N_c) symmsetry, characterizing the confinement
(intact) and deconfinement (spontaneously broken) phases. As a result, we
observe the crossover of the chiral (chi) order parameter sigma^2 and Phi. It
also turns out that the critical temperature for the deconfinment phase
transition, T^Z_c is lowered by about (5-10)% in comparison to the case with a
constant constituent-quark mass. This behavior can be understood by
considerable effects from the partial chiral restoration and nontrivial QCD
vacuum on Phi. Numerical calculations show that the crossover transitions occur
at (T^chi_c,T^Z_c) ~ (216,227) MeV.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
The Effects of Bovine Growth Hormone (bGH) on Dairy Farm Profitability by Type of Government Program
Administration of Bovine Growth Hormone (bGH) to dairy cows has been shown to increase milk production. Injecting milk cows with bGH results in increased milk production per cow from 10 to 40 percent (Kalter et al.). This response is rapid and continues as long as treatment is given. Presently, the injection is daily, but research is ongoing to develop implants to eliminate this tedious and laborious approach. Some feel that bGH will be available for commercial use within two or three years. It is now in the testing stage for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval
Population coding by globally coupled phase oscillators
A system of globally coupled phase oscillators subject to an external input
is considered as a simple model of neural circuits coding external stimulus.
The information coding efficiency of the system in its asynchronous state is
quantified using Fisher information. The effect of coupling and noise on the
information coding efficiency in the stationary state is analyzed. The
relaxation process of the system after the presentation of an external input is
also studied. It is found that the information coding efficiency exhibits a
large transient increase before the system relaxes to the final stationary

Unconventional Josephson Effect in Hybrid Superconductor-Topological Insulator Devices
We report on transport properties of Josephson junctions in hybrid
superconducting-topological insulator devices, which show two striking
departures from the common Josephson junction behavior: a characteristic energy
that scales inversely with the width of the junction, and a low characteristic
magnetic field for suppressing supercurrent. To explain these effects, we
propose a phenomenological model which expands on the existing theory for
topological insulator Josephson junctions
Feasibility Study for Elimination of the Screening Current-Induced Fields in HTS Coil
Herein, we report a feasibility study for elimination of the screening current-induced field (SCIF) in fully insulated (INS) and no-insulation (NI) GdBCO coated conductor (CC) coils exposed to an external AC magnetic field generated by background solenoid copper coils. Prior to investigating the effects of external AC magnetic fields on SCIF in the GdBCO CC coils, the magnetic flux density (B[subscript z]) was calculated using the equivalent circuit model and compared to the B[subscript z] obtained empirically to quantify the SCIF in the INS and NI coils. The value of the SCIF in the NI coil was smaller than that in the INS coil without the use of an external AC magnetic field, due to the current paths originating from the turn-to-turn and layer-to-layer contacts, suggesting that the screening current dissipated by contact resistance during charging. When the INS and NI coils were exposed to the external AC magnetic field, the B[subscript z] of the coils increased gradually, and eventually saturating to the calculated B[subscript z] values, indicating full removal of the SCIF. In addition, the SCIF of the NI coil could be removed under subjection to a lower external AC magnetic field compared to the INS coil, due to the lower SCIF occurring in the NI coil after charging.Korea (South). Stress condensation in crushed elastic manifolds
We discuss an M-dimensional phantom elastic manifold of linear size L crushed
into a small sphere of radius R << L in N-dimensional space. We investigate the
low elastic energy states of 2-sheets (M=2) and 3-sheets (M=3) using analytic
methods and lattice simulations. When N \geq 2M the curvature energy is
uniformly distributed in the sheet and the strain energy is negligible. But
when N=M+1 and M>1, both energies appear to be condensed into a network of
narrow M-1 dimensional ridges. The ridges appear straight over distances

Introduction to topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions
This short review article provides a pedagogical introduction to the rapidly
growing research field of Majorana fermions in topological superconductors. We
first discuss in some details the simplest "toy model" in which Majoranas
appear, namely a one-dimensional tight-binding representation of a p-wave
superconductor, introduced more than ten years ago by Kitaev. We then give a
general introduction to the remarkable properties of Majorana fermions in
condensed matter systems, such as their intrinsically non-local nature and
exotic exchange statistics, and explain why these quasiparticles are suspected
to be especially well suited for low-decoherence quantum information
processing. We also discuss the experimentally promising (and perhaps already
successfully realized) possibility of creating topological superconductors
using semiconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling, proximity-coupled to
standard s-wave superconductors and exposed to a magnetic field. The goal is to
provide an introduction to the subject for experimentalists or theorists who
are new to the field, focusing on the aspects which are most important for
understanding the basic physics. The text should be accessible for readers with
a basic understanding of quantum mechanics and second quantization, and does
not require knowledge of quantum field theory or topological states of matter.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figure
