Integrating hot and cool intelligences: Thinking Broadly about Broad Abilities
Although results from factor-analytic studies of the broad, second-stratum abilities of human intelligence have been fairly consistent for decades, the list of broad abilities is far from complete, much less understood. We propose criteria by which the list of broad abilities could be amended and envision alternatives for how our understanding of the hot intelligences (abilities involving emotionally-salient information) and cool intelligences (abilities involving perceptual processing and logical reasoning) might be integrated into a coherent theoretical framework
Low power, compact charge coupled device signal processing system
A variety of charged coupled devices (CCDs) for performing programmable correlation for preprocessing environmental sensor data preparatory to its transmission to the ground were developed. A total of two separate ICs were developed and a third was evaluated. The first IC was a CCD chirp z transform IC capable of performing a 32 point DFT at frequencies to 1 MHz. All on chip circuitry operated as designed with the exception of the limited dynamic range caused by a fixed pattern noise due to interactions between the digital and analog circuits. The second IC developed was a 64 stage CCD analog/analog correlator for performing time domain correlation. Multiplier errors were found to be less than 1 percent at designed signal levels and less than 0.3 percent at the measured smaller levels. A prototype IC for performing time domain correlation was also evaluated
Evidence for a Galactic gamma ray halo
We present quantitative statistical evidence for a -ray emission halo
surrounding the Galaxy. Maps of the emission are derived. EGRET data were
analyzed in a wavelet-based non-parametric hypothesis testing framework, using
a model of expected diffuse (Galactic + isotropic) emission as a null
hypothesis. The results show a statistically significant large scale halo
surrounding the center of the Milky Way as seen from Earth. The halo flux at
high latitudes is somewhat smaller than the isotropic gamma-ray flux at the
same energy, though of the same order (O(10^(-7)--10^(-6)) ph/cm^2/s/sr above 1

Framework Programmable Platform for the Advanced Software Development Workstation: Preliminary system design document
The Framework Programmable Software Development Platform (FPP) is a project aimed at combining effective tool and data integration mechanisms with a model of the software development process in an intelligent integrated software environment. Guided by the model, this system development framework will take advantage of an integrated operating environment to automate effectively the management of the software development process so that costly mistakes during the development phase can be eliminated. The focus here is on the design of components that make up the FPP. These components serve as supporting systems for the Integration Mechanism and the Framework Processor and provide the 'glue' that ties the FPP together. Also discussed are the components that allow the platform to operate in a distributed, heterogeneous environment and to manage the development and evolution of software system artifacts
Heterogeneous Dynamics of Coarsening Systems
We show by means of experiments, theory and simulations, that the slow
dynamics of coarsening systems displays dynamic heterogeneity similar to that
observed in glass-forming systems. We measure dynamic heterogeneity via novel
multi-point functions which quantify the emergence of dynamic, as opposed to
static, correlations of fluctuations. Experiments are performed on a coarsening
foam using Time Resolved Correlation, a recently introduced light scattering
method. Theoretically we study the Ising model, and present exact results in
one dimension, and numerical results in two dimensions. For all systems the
same dynamic scaling of fluctuations with domain size is observed.Comment: Minor changes; to be published in Phys. Rev. Let
N-body decomposition of bipartite networks
In this paper, we present a method to project co-authorship networks, that
accounts in detail for the geometrical structure of scientists collaborations.
By restricting the scope to 3-body interactions, we focus on the number of
triangles in the system, and show the importance of multi-scientists (more than
2) collaborations in the social network. This motivates the introduction of
generalized networks, where basic connections are not binary, but involve
arbitrary number of components. We focus on the 3-body case, and study

Anthelmintic resistance in ovine gastrointestinal nematodes in inland southern Queensland
Objective To establish the prevalence of anthelmintic resistance in ovine gastrointestinal nematodes in southern Queensland. Design An observational parasitological study using the faecal egg count reduction test. Methods Sheep farms (n = 20) enrolled in this study met the twin criteria of using worm testing for drench decisions and having concerns about anthelmintic efficacy. On each farm, 105 sheep were randomly allocated to one of six treatment groups or an untreated control group. Faecal samples were collected on day 0 and days 10–14 for worm egg counts and larval differentiation. Single- and multi-combination anthelmintics, persistent and non-persistent, oral liquid or capsule, pour-on and injectable formulations were tested. Monepantel was not tested. Farmers also responded to a questionnaire on drenching practices. Results Haemonchus contortus was the predominant species. Efficacy <95% was recorded on 85% of farms for one or more anthelmintics and on 10% of farms for six anthelmintics. No resistance was identified on three farms. The 4-way combination product was efficacious (n = 4 farms). Napthalophos resistance was detected on one farm only. Resistance to levamisole (42% of farms), moxidectin injection (50% of farms) and the closantel/abamectin combination (67% of farms) was identified. Moxidectin oral was efficacious against Trichostrongylus colubriformis, which was predominant on only one farm. Of the farms tested, 55% ran meat breeds, 60% dosed more than the recommended dose rate and 70% always, mostly or when possible practised a ‘drench and move’ strategy. Black Hole Radiation and Volume Statistical Entropy
The simplest possible equation for Hawking radiation, and other black hole
radiated power is derived in terms of black hole density. Black hole density
also leads to the simplest possible model of a gas of elementary constituents
confined inside a gravitational bottle of Schwarzchild radius at tremendous
pressure, which yields identically the same functional dependence as the
traditional black hole entropy. Variations of Sbh can be obtained which depend
on the occupancy of phase space cells. A relation is derived between the
constituent momenta and the black hole radius which is similar to the Compton
