    Self-Organizing Maps and Parton Distributions Functions

    We present a new method to extract parton distribution functions from high energy experimental data based on a specific type of neural networks, the Self-Organizing Maps. We illustrate the features of our new procedure that are particularly useful for an anaysis directed at extracting generalized parton distributions from data.     Context Dependence, MOPs,WHIMs and procedures Recanati and Kaplan on Cognitive Aspects in Semantics

    After presenting Kripke’s criticism to Frege’s ideas on context dependence of thoughts, I present two recent attempts of considering cognitive aspects of context dependent expressions inside a truth conditional pragmatics or semantics: Recanati’s non-descriptive modes of presentation (MOPs) and Kaplan’s ways of having in mind (WHIMs). After analysing the two attempts and verifying which answers they should give to the problem discussed by Kripke, I suggest a possible interpretation of these attempts: to insert a procedural or algorithmic level in semantic representations of indexicals.     Perturbative Tamm-Dancoff Renormalization

    A new two-step renormalization procedure is proposed. In the first step, the effects of high-energy states are considered in the conventional (Feynman) perturbation theory. In the second step, the coupling to many-body states is eliminated by a similarity transformation. The resultant effective Hamiltonian contains only interactions which do not change particle number. It is subject to numerical diagonalization. We apply the general procedure to a simple example for the purpose of illustration.Comment: 20 pages, RevTeX, 10 figure

    Spin wave spectrum of the quantum ferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice Lu2V2O7

    Neutron inelastic scattering has been used to probe the spin dynamics of the quantum (S=1/2) ferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice Lu2V2O7. Well-defined spin waves are observed at all energies and wavevectors, allowing us to determine the parameters of the Hamiltonian of the system. The data are found to be in excellent overall agreement with a minimal model that includes a nearest- neighbour Heisenberg exchange J = 8:22(2) meV and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) D =1:5(1) meV. The large DMI term revealed by our study is broadly consistent with the model developed by Onose et al. to explain the magnon Hall effect they observed in Lu2V2O7 [1], although our ratio of D=J = 0:18(1) is roughly half of their value and three times larger than calculated by ab initio methods [2].Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Modeling Agglomeration of Dust Particles in Plasma

    The charge on an aggregate immersed in a plasma environment distributes itself over the aggregate's surface; this can be approximated theoretically by assuming a multipole distribution. The dipole-dipole (or higher order) charge interactions between fractal aggregates lead to rotations of the grains as they interact. Other properties of the dust grains also influence the agglomeration process, such as the monomer shape (spherical or ellipsoidal) or the presence of magnetic material. Finally, the plasma and grain properties also determine the morphology of the resultant aggregates. Porous and fluffy aggregates are more strongly coupled to the gas, leading to reduced collisional velocities, and greater collisional cross sections. These factors in turn can determine the growth rate of the aggregates and evolution of the dust cloud.     Analytic Treatment of Positronium Spin Splittings in Light-Front QED

    We study the QED bound-state problem in a light-front hamiltonian approach. Starting with a bare cutoff QED Hamiltonian, HBH_{_{B}}, with matrix elements between free states of drastically different energies removed, we perform a similarity transformation that removes the matrix elements between free states with energy differences between the bare cutoff, Λ\Lambda, and effective cutoff, \lam (\lam < \Lam). This generates effective interactions in the renormalized Hamiltonian, HRH_{_{R}}. These effective interactions are derived to order α\alpha in this work, with α≪1\alpha \ll 1. HRH_{_{R}} is renormalized by requiring it to satisfy coupling coherence. A nonrelativistic limit of the theory is taken, and the resulting Hamiltonian is studied using bound-state perturbation theory (BSPT). The effective cutoff, \lam^2, is fixed, and the limit, 0 \longleftarrow m^2 \alpha^2\ll \lam^2 \ll m^2 \alpha \longrightarrow \infty, is taken. This upper bound on \lam^2 places the effects of low-energy (energy transfer below \lam) emission in the effective interactions in the ∣ee‾>| e {\overline e} > sector. This lower bound on \lam^2 insures that the nonperturbative scale of interest is not removed by the similarity transformation. As an explicit example of the general formalism introduced, we show that the Hamiltonian renormalized to O(α)O(\alpha) reproduces the exact spectrum of spin splittings, with degeneracies dictated by rotational symmetry, for the ground state through O(α4)O(\alpha^4). The entire calculation is performed analytically, and gives the well known singlet-triplet ground state spin splitting of positronium, 7/6α2Ryd7/6 \alpha^2 Ryd.
