Interaction effects and quantum phase transitions in topological insulators
We study strong correlation effects in topological insulators via the Lanczos
algorithm, which we utilize to calculate the exact many-particle ground-state
wave function and its topological properties. We analyze the simple,
noninteracting Haldane model on a honeycomb lattice with known topological
properties and demonstrate that these properties are already evident in small
clusters. Next, we consider interacting fermions by introducing repulsive
nearest-neighbor interactions. A first-order quantum phase transition was
discovered at finite interaction strength between the topological band
insulator and a topologically trivial Mott insulating phase by use of the
fidelity metric and the charge-density-wave structure factor. We construct the
phase diagram at as a function of the interaction strength and the
complex phase for the next-nearest-neighbor hoppings. Finally, we consider the
Haldane model with interacting hard-core bosons, where no evidence for a
topological phase is observed. An important general conclusion of our work is
that despite the intrinsic nonlocality of topological phases their key
topological properties manifest themselves already in small systems and
therefore can be studied numerically via exact diagonalization and observed
experimentally, e.g., with trapped ions and cold atoms in optical lattices.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures. Published versio
high myopic photorefractive keratectomy outcomes with the alcon Wavelight® eX500 excimer laser
Purpose: To present refractive outcomes from consecutive cases with the Alcon Wavelight® EX500 excimer laser using photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in patients with high myopia. Methods: A retrospective chart review of consecutive cases of high myopic eyes ($6.0 Diopters [D]) undergoing PRK with the Alcon Wavelight EX500 excimer laser (Alcon Labo- ratories, Fort Worth, TX, USA) was done. Moderately high myopic eyes (6.0 to ,8.0 D [6 D]) were compared with high myopic eyes (8.0 D or greater [8 D]). Outcomes measured included pre- and postoperative refractive error, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity, spherical equivalent correction (SEQ), haze incidence, and intraocular pressure (IOP).
Results: One hundred eighteen eyes of 63 patients were evaluated, with 59 eyes having 12 months of follow-up. Thirty-one eyes of 19 patients had 8.0 D or more of myopia. Twelve- month average LogMAR UDVA was −0.06 (20/17) for the 6 D group and −0.08 (20/16) for the 8 D group. Average 12-month SEQ was −0.18 D and preoperatively was −7.52 D for the 6 D group and −0.09 and −9.02 in the 8 D group. Sixty-five eyes (86%) and 24 eyes (96%) had an SEQ within 0.50 D of emmetropia at 3 months in the 6 and 8 D groups, respectively. One eye had visually significant haze developed at 8 months. Three eyes had IOP elevation that resolved with addition of short-term topical IOP-lowering medication.
Conclusion: High myopic PRK with the Alcon Wavelight EX500 excimer laser yields excel- lent refractive outcomes with a low incidence of complications
Lattice Kinetics of Diffusion-Limited Coalescence and Annihilation with Sources
We study the 1D kinetics of diffusion-limited coalescence and annihilation
with back reactions and different kinds of particle input. By considering the
changes in occupation and parity of a given interval, we derive sets of
hierarchical equations from which exact expressions for the lattice coverage
and the particle concentration can be obtained. We compare the mean-field
approximation and the continuum approximation to the exact solutions and we

Adolescents' experiences of street harassment: creating a typology and assessing the emotional impact
Purpose: Research examining young people's experiences of harassment has tended to focus on the school and digital environment. Despite street harassment being identified as a common experience for adult women, very few studies have explored adolescents' experiences of street harassment.
Methodology: A person centred analytical approach, based on experienced reporting, was used to create a typology of street harassment. Reports of street harassment were received from 118 (68 female, 43 male, 7 no gender reported) 11- to 15-year-olds over a 6 to 8 week period.
Findings: Cluster analysis revealed four distinct groups: "predominately verbal", "non-verbal/non-direct", "other incident", and "all forms". Young women and those in the "all forms" group reported experiencing greater negative emotions following the episode of street harassment. Young men were equally as likely as young women to report experiencing street harassment.
Value: The findings uniquely highlight that adolescents experience distinct types of street harassment and some of which are associated with negative emotions

Global glacier volume projections under high-end climate change scenarios
The Paris agreement aims to hold global warming to well below 2°C and to pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C relative to the pre-industrial period. Recent estimates based on population growth and intended carbon emissions from participant countries, suggest global warming may exceed this ambitious target. Here we present glacier volume projections for the end of this century, under a range of high-end climate change scenarios, defined as exceeding +2°C global average warming relative to the preindustrial period. Glacier volume is modelled by developing an elevation-dependent mass balance model for the Joint UK Land Environmental Simulator (JULES). To do this, we modify JULES to include glaciated and un-glaciated surfaces that can exist at multiple heights within a single grid-box. Present day mass balance is calibrated by tuning albedo, wind speed, precipitation and temperature lapse rates to obtain the best agreement with observed mass balance profiles. JULES is forced with an ensemble of six Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) models which were downscaled using the high resolution HadGEM3-A atmosphere only global climate model. The ensemble mean volume loss at the end of the century plus/minus one standard deviation is, minus;64±5% for all glaciers excluding those on the peripheral of the Antarctic ice sheet. The uncertainty in the multi-model mean is rather small and caused by the sensitivity of HadGEM3-A to the boundary conditions supplied by the CMIP5 models. The regions which lose more than 75% of their initial volume by the end of the century are; Alaska, Western Canada and US, Iceland, Scandinavia, Russian Arctic, Central Europe, Caucasus, High Mountain Asia, Low Latitudes, Southern Andes and New Zealand. The ensemble mean ice loss expressed in sea-level equivalent contribution is 215.2±21.3mm. The largest contributors to sea level rise are Alaska (44.6±1.1mm), Arctic Canada North and South (34.9±3.0mm), Russian Arctic (33.3±4.8mm), Greenland (20.1±4.4), High Mountain Asia (combined Central Asia, South Asia East and West), (18.0±0.8mm), Southern Andes (14.4±0.1mm) and Svalbard (17.0±4.6mm). Including parametric uncertainty in the calibrated mass balance parameters, gives an upper bound global volume loss of 247.3mm, sea-level equivalent by the end of the century. Such large ice losses will have inevitable consequences for sea-level rise and for water supply in glacier-fed river systems
NASA Lunar Regolith Simulant Program
Lunar regolith simulant production is absolutely critical to returning man to the Moon. Regolith simulant is used to test hardware exposed to the lunar surface environment, simulate health risks to astronauts, practice in situ resource utilization (ISRU) techniques, and evaluate dust mitigation strategies. Lunar regolith simulant design, production process, and management is a cooperative venture between members of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The MSFC simulant team is a satellite of the Dust group based at Glenn Research Center. The goals of the cooperative group are to (1) reproduce characteristics of lunar regolith using simulants, (2) produce simulants as cheaply as possible, (3) produce simulants in the amount needed, and (4) produce simulants to meet users? schedules
How much dystrophin is enough: the physiological consequences of different levels of dystrophin in the mdx mouse
Splice modulation therapy has shown great clinical promise in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, resulting in the production of dystrophin protein. Despite this, the relationship between restoring dystrophin to established dystrophic muscle and its ability to induce clinically relevant changes in muscle function is poorly understood. In order to robustly evaluate functional improvement, we used in situ protocols in the mdx mouse to measure muscle strength and resistance to eccentric contraction-induced damage. Here, we modelled the treatment of muscle with pre-existing dystrophic pathology using antisense oligonucleotides conjugated to a cell-penetrating peptide. We reveal that 15% homogeneous dystrophin expression is sufficient to protect against eccentric contraction-induced injury. In addition, we demonstrate a >40% increase in specific isometric force following repeated administrations. Strikingly, we show that changes in muscle strength are proportional to dystrophin expression levels. These data define the dystrophin restoration levels required to slow down or prevent disease progression and improve overall muscle function once a dystrophic environment has been established in the mdx mouse model
