Metre-per-second microfluidic flow velocimetry with dual beam optical coherence tomography
A novel dual beam Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) instrument has been developed for high velocity flow measurement, principally in microfluidics applications. The scanned dual beam approach creates a pair of image-frames separated by a small spatiotemporal offset. Metre-per-second flow measurement is achieved by rapid re-imaging by the second beam allowing for particle tracking between each image-frame of the pair. Flow at 1.06 m/s using a single optical access port has been measured, more than two orders of magnitude larger than previously reported OCT systems, at centimetre depth and with millimetre scale depth of field within a microfluidic chip, whilst simultaneously imaging the microfluidic channel structure
Geometrical characteristics of magnetospheric energetic ion time series: evidence for low dimensional chaos
International audienceIn the first part of the paper we study the geometrical characteristics of the magnetospheric ions' time series in the reconstructed phase space by using the SVD extended chaotic analysis, and we test the strong null hypothesis supposing that the ions' time series is caused by a linear stochastic process perturbed by a static nonlinear distortion. The SVD reconstructed spectrum of the ions' signal reveals a strong component of high dimensional, external coloured noise, as well as an internal low dimensional nonlinear deterministic component. Also, the stochastic Lorenz system produced by coloured noise perturbation of the deterministic Lorenz system was used as an archetype model in comparison with the dynamics of the magnetrospheric ions
Avalanche Photo-Detection for High Data Rate Applications
Avalanche photo detection is commonly used in applications which require
single photon sensitivity. We examine the limits of using avalanche photo
diodes (APD) for characterising photon statistics at high data rates. To
identify the regime of linear APD operation we employ a ps-pulsed diode laser
with variable repetition rates between 0.5MHz and 80MHz. We modify the mean
optical power of the coherent pulses by applying different levels of
well-calibrated attenuation. The linearity at high repetition rates is limited
by the APD dead time and a non-linear response arises at higher photon-numbers
due to multiphoton events. Assuming Poissonian input light statistics we
ascertain the effective mean photon-number of the incident light with high
accuracy. Time multiplexed detectors (TMD) allow to accomplish photon- number
resolution by photon chopping. This detection setup extends the linear response
function to higher photon-numbers and statistical methods may be used to
compensate for non-linearity. We investigated this effect, compare it to the
single APD case and show the validity of the convolution treatment in the TMD

A dose-finding and safety study of novel erythropoiesis stimulating protein (NESP) for the treatment of anaemia in patients receiving multicycle chemotherapy
Darbepoetin alfa is a novel erythropoiesis stimulating protein (NESP), which stimulates erythropoiesis by the same mechanism as recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO). NESP has been shown to be safe and efficacious in patients with chronic renal failure. NESP is biochemically distinct from rHuEPO, due to its increased sialic acid content. NESP has an approximately 3-fold greater half-life. rHuEPO has been shown to be safe and effective for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced anaemia. This study assessed the safety and efficacy of NESP administered once per week, under the supervision of a physician, to patients with solid tumours who were receiving multicycle chemotherapy for up to 12 weeks. Three dose cohorts are presented in this sequential, unblinded and dose-escalating study. Thirteen to 59 patients received NESP (0.5, 1.5 or 2.25âmcgâkgâ1wkâ1) in each cohort. Patients were monitored for adverse events, including antibody formation to NESP and for effects on haemoglobin. NESP appeared to be well tolerated. Adverse events were similar across all cohorts and were consistent with the population being studied. No antibody formation was detected over the 16-week study period and follow-up. A doseâresponse relationship was evident for NESP and multiple measures of efficacy, including proportion of patients responding to NESP and the mean change in haemoglobin by week 4 and end of treatment for NESP 0.5, 1.5 and 2.25 mcg kgâ1wkâ1cohorts (mean change in haemoglobin at end of treatment was 1.24, 1.73 and 2.15 g dlâ1respectively). Controlled studies of this agent at higher doses and less frequent schedules of administration are ongoing. © 2001 Cance Cancer Research Campaig
The role of brand loyalty and social media in e-commerce interfaces: survey results and implications for user interfaces
This paper explores the role of brand loyalty and social media in e-commerce interfaces. A survey consisting of 118 respondents was contacted to address the questions relating to online shopping and brand loyalty. Link between the frequency of access and time spent on an e-commerce user interface, and brand loyalty, gender and age profile differences, and the role of social media to branding and on-line shopping was analyzed. It was found that online loyalty differs from offline loyalty and loyalty also differed across genders, showing men were more loyal than women when shopping online. Information shared about products on social media by friends and family played an important role in purchase decision making. Website interface and ease of navigation were also key aspects for online shopping. The research concluded with recommendations to create multimodal websites which are more interactive and targeted so customer experience is enhanced and loyalty is achieved through the use of interactivity and social media

Mining balance disorders' data for the development of diagnostic decision support systems
In this work we present the methodology for the development of the EMBalance diagnostic Decision Support System (DSS) for balance disorders. Medical data from patients with balance disorders have been analysed using data mining techniques for the development of the diagnostic DSS. The proposed methodology uses various data, ranging from demographic characteristics to clinical examination, auditory and vestibular tests, in order to provide an accurate diagnosis. The system aims to provide decision support for general practitioners (GPs) and experts in the diagnosis of balance disorders as well as to provide recommendations for the appropriate information and data to be requested at each step of the diagnostic process. Detailed results are provided for the diagnosis of 12 balance disorders, both for GPs and experts. Overall, the reported accuracy ranges from 59.3 to 89.8% for GPs and from 74.3 to 92.1% for experts
