Utility of ranolazine in chronic stable angina patients
Chronic stable angina is a debilitating illness affecting at least 6.6 million US residents. Despite being optimally treated by pharmacotherapy and revascularization up to 26% of patients still experience angina. Diabetes mellitus is a common co-morbid condition in angina patients. Several new investigational medications are being tested for chronic angina. Advances in understanding of myocardial ischemia have prompted evaluation of a number of new antianginal strategies. In this review we discuss the utility of ranolazine, a recently approved novel antianginal agent and its efficacy in the diabetic patient population. In addition to its antianginal action in diabetic patients with chronic angina, ranolazine may have favorable effects on glycated hemoglobin levels

The parameterized complexity of some geometric problems in unbounded dimension
We study the parameterized complexity of the following fundamental geometric
problems with respect to the dimension : i) Given points in \Rd,
compute their minimum enclosing cylinder. ii) Given two -point sets in
\Rd, decide whether they can be separated by two hyperplanes. iii) Given a
system of linear inequalities with variables, find a maximum-size
feasible subsystem. We show that (the decision versions of) all these problems
are W[1]-hard when parameterized by the dimension . %and hence not solvable
in time, for any computable function and constant
%(unless FPT=W[1]). Our reductions also give a -time lower bound

Fast by Nature - How Stress Patterns Define Human Experience and Performance in Dexterous Tasks
In the present study we quantify stress by measuring transient perspiratory responses on the perinasal area through thermal imaging. These responses prove to be sympathetically driven and hence, a likely indicator of stress processes in the brain. Armed with the unobtrusive measurement methodology we developed, we were able to monitor stress responses in the context of surgical training, the quintessence of human dexterity. We show that in dexterous tasking under critical conditions, novices attempt to perform a task's step equally fast with experienced individuals. We further show that while fast behavior in experienced individuals is afforded by skill, fast behavior in novices is likely instigated by high stress levels, at the expense of accuracy. Humans avoid adjusting speed to skill and rather grow their skill to a predetermined speed level, likely defined by neurophysiological latency
State-insensitive trapping of Rb atoms: linearly versus circularly polarized lights
We study the cancellation of differential ac Stark shifts in the 5s and 5p
states of rubidium atom using the linearly and circularly polarized lights by
calculating their dynamic polarizabilities. Matrix elements were calculated
using a relativistic coupled-cluster method at the single, double and important
valence triple excitations approximation including all possible non-linear
correlation terms. Some of the important matrix elements were further optimized
using the experimental results available for the lifetimes and static
polarizabilities of atomic states. "Magic wavelengths" are determined from the
differential Stark shifts and results for the linearly polarized light are
compared with the previously available results. Possible scope of facilitating
state-insensitive optical trapping schemes using the magic wavelengths for
circularly polarized light are discussed. Using the optimized matrix elements,
the lifetimes of the 4d and 6s states of this atom are ameliorated.Comment: 13 pages, 13 tables and 4 figure

Energy saving in fixed wireless broadband networks
International audienceIn this paper, we present a mathematical formulation for saving energy in fixed broadband wireless networks by selectively turning off idle communication devices in low-demand scenarios. This problem relies on a fixed-charge capacitated network design (FCCND), which is very hard to optimize. We then propose heuristic algorithms to produce feasible solutions in a short time.Dans cet article, nous proposons une modélisation en programme linéaire en nombres entiers pour le problème de minimiser la consommation d'énergie dans les réseaux de collecte à faisceaux hertziens en éteignant une partie des équipements lorsque le trafic est bas. Ce problème repose sur un problème de dimensionnement de réseaux dont les arcs ont une capacité fixe, qui est très difficile à résoudre.
