Police, public, and offender perceptions of body-worn video: a single jurisdictional multiple-perspective analysis
Objectives. Police, public, and offender survey responses from a single jurisdiction give a multiple-perspective insight into the use of body-worn video (BWV) cameras by police.
Methods. Police attitudinal data was collected from before (n = 190), during (n = 139), and at the conclusion (n = 221) of a BWV implementation trial. Public attitudes were collected at the conclusion of the BWV implementation trial via online survey (n = 995 respondents) and intercept survey (n = 428 respondents). Offender attitudes (n = 302) were collected in police custody over a 6-month period immediately preceding the BWV trial.
Results. The extent to which police felt BWV influenced their behavior tempered during the trial. All three perspectives were supportive of the use of BWV. The public who had encountered BWV-wearing officers and the offender sample indicated limited belief that BWV would reduce bad behavior. There was also clear contention about the policy and practice decisions around recording.
Conclusions. These findings have significance for BWV trials, commenting on the importance of (a) collecting police attitudes at multiple points, (b) separating the attitudes of public who did encounter police wearing BWV, and (c) data collection and policy for evaluation outcomes
MINERvA neutrino detector response measured with test beam data
The MINERvA collaboration operated a scaled-down replica of the solid
scintillator tracking and sampling calorimeter regions of the MINERvA detector
in a hadron test beam at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility. This article reports
measurements with samples of protons, pions, and electrons from 0.35 to 2.0
GeV/c momentum. The calorimetric response to protons, pions, and electrons are
obtained from these data. A measurement of the parameter in Birks' law and an
estimate of the tracking efficiency are extracted from the proton sample.
Overall the data are well described by a Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulation of
the detector and particle interactions with agreements better than 4%, though
some features of the data are not precisely modeled. These measurements are
used to tune the MINERvA detector simulation and evaluate systematic
uncertainties in support of the MINERvA neutrino cross section measurement

Fluid Ontologies in the Search for MH370
This paper gives an account of the disappearance of Malaysian Airways Flight MH370 into the southern Indian Ocean in March 2014 and analyses the rare glimpses into remote ocean space this incident opened up. It follows the tenuous clues as to where the aeroplane might have come to rest after it disappeared from radar screens – seven satellite pings, hundreds of pieces of floating debris and six underwater sonic recordings – as ways of entering into and thinking about ocean space. The paper pays attention to and analyses this space on three registers – first, as a fluid, more-than-human materiality with particular properties and agencies; second, as a synthetic situation, a composite of informational bits and pieces scopically articulated and augmented; and third, as geopolitics, delineated by the protocols of international search and rescue. On all three registers – as matter, as data and as law – the ocean is shown to be ontologically fluid, a world defined by movement, flow and flux, posing intractable difficulties for human interactions with it
The T2K ND280 Off-Axis Pi-Zero Detector
The Pi-Zero detector (P{\O}D) is one of the subdetectors that makes up the
off-axis near detector for the Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) long baseline neutrino
experiment. The primary goal for the P{\O}D is to measure the relevant cross
sections for neutrino interactions that generate pi-zero's, especially the
cross section for neutral current pi-zero interactions, which are one of the
dominant sources of background to the electron neutrino appearance signal in
T2K. The P{\O}D is composed of layers of plastic scintillator alternating with
water bags and brass sheets or lead sheets and is one of the first detectors to
use Multi-Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs) on a large scale.Comment: 17 pages, submitted to NIM
Viking Afterbody Heating Computations and Comparisons to Flight Data
Computational fluid dynamics predictions of Viking Lander 1 entry vehicle afterbody heating are compared to flight data. The analysis includes a derivation of heat flux from temperature data at two base cover locations, as well as a discussion of available reconstructed entry trajectories. Based on the raw temperature-time history data, convective heat flux is derived to be 0.63-1.10 W/sq cm for the aluminum base cover at the time of thermocouple failure. Peak heat flux at the fiberglass base cover thermocouple is estimated to be 0.54-0.76 W/sq cm, occurring 16 seconds after peak stagnation point heat flux. Navier-Stokes computational solutions are obtained with two separate codes using an 8-species Mars gas model in chemical and thermal non-equilibrium. Flowfield solutions using local time-stepping did not result in converged heating at either thermocouple location. A global time-stepping approach improved the computational stability, but steady state heat flux was not reached for either base cover location. Both thermocouple locations lie within a separated flow region of the base cover that is likely unsteady. Heat flux computations averaged over the solution history are generally below the flight data and do not vary smoothly over time for both base cover locations. Possible reasons for the mismatch between flight data and flowfield solutions include underestimated conduction effects and limitations of the computational methods

Investigating the relationship between thalamic iron concentration and disease severity in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis using quantitative susceptibility mapping: Cross-sectional analysis from the MS-STAT2 randomised controlled trial
BACKGROUND:
Deep grey matter pathology is a key driver of disability worsening in people with multiple sclerosis. Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is an advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique which quantifies local magnetic susceptibility from variations in phase produced by changes in the local magnetic field. In the deep grey matter, susceptibility has previously been validated against tissue iron concentration. However, it currently remains unknown whether susceptibility is abnormal in older progressive MS cohorts, and whether it correlates with disability.
OBJECTIVES:
To investigate differences in mean regional susceptibility in deep grey matter between people with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) and healthy controls; to examine in patients the relationships between deep grey matter susceptibility and clinical and imaging measures of disease severity.
METHODS:
Baseline data from a subgroup of the MS-STAT2 trial (simvastatin vs. placebo in SPMS, NCT03387670) were included. The subgroup underwent clinical assessments and an advanced MRI protocol at 3T. A cohort of age-matched healthy controls underwent the same MRI protocol. Susceptibility maps were reconstructed using a robust QSM pipeline from multi-echo 3D gradient-echo sequence. Regions of interest (ROIs) in the thalamus, globus pallidus and putamen were segmented from 3D T1-weighted images, and lesions segmented from 3D fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images. Linear regression was used to compare susceptibility from ROIs between patients and controls, adjusting for age and sex. Where significant differences were found, we further examined the associations between ROI susceptibility and clinical and imaging measures of MS severity.
RESULTS:
149 SPMS (77% female; mean age: 53 yrs; median Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS): 6.0 [interquartile range 4.5–6.0]) and 33 controls (52% female, mean age: 57) were included.
Thalamic susceptibility was significantly lower in SPMS compared to controls: mean (SD) 28.6 (12.8) parts per billion (ppb) in SPMS vs. 39.2 (12.7) ppb in controls; regression coefficient: −12.0 [95% confidence interval: −17.0 to −7.1], p < 0.001. In contrast, globus pallidus and putamen susceptibility were similar between both groups.
In SPMS, a 10 ppb lower thalamic susceptibility was associated with a +0.13 [+0.01 to +0.24] point higher EDSS (p < 0.05), a −2.4 [−3.8 to −1.0] point lower symbol digit modality test (SDMT, p = 0.001), and a −2.4 [−3.7 to −1.1] point lower Sloan low contrast acuity, 2.5% (p < 0.01).
Lower thalamic susceptibility was also strongly associated with a higher T2 lesion volume (T2LV, p < 0.001) and lower normalised whole brain, deep grey matter and thalamic volumes (all p < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS:
The reduced thalamic susceptibility found in SPMS compared to controls suggests that thalamic iron concentrations are lower at this advanced stage of the disease. The observed relationships between lower thalamic susceptibility and more severe physical, cognitive and visual disability suggests that reductions in thalamic iron may correlate with important mechanisms of clinical disease progression. Such mechanisms appear to intimately link reductions in thalamic iron with higher T2LV and the development of thalamic atrophy, encouraging further research into QSM-derived thalamic susceptibility as a biomarker of disease severity in SPMS
Conceptual Design for a Dual-Bell Rocket Nozzle System Using a NASA F-15 Airplane as the Flight Testbed
The dual-bell rocket nozzle was first proposed in 1949, offering a potential improvement in rocket nozzle performance over the conventional-bell nozzle. Despite the performance advantages that have been predicted, both analytically and through static test data, the dual-bell nozzle has still not been adequately tested in a relevant flight environment. In 2013 a proposal was constructed that offered a NASA F-15 airplane as the flight testbed, with the plan to operate a dual-bell rocket nozzle during captive-carried flight. If implemented, this capability will permit nozzle operation into an external flow field similar to that of a launch vehicle, and facilitate an improved understanding of dual-bell nozzle plume sensitivity to external flow-field effects. More importantly, this flight testbed can be utilized to help quantify the performance benefit with the dual-bell nozzle, as well as to advance its technology readiness level. This presentation provides highlights of a technical paper that outlines this ultimate goal, including plans for future flights to quantify the external flow field of the airplane near the nozzle experiment, as well as details on the conceptual design for the dual-bell nozzle cold-flow propellant feed system integration within the NASA F-15 Propulsion Flight Test Fixture. The current study shows that this concept of flight research is feasible, and could result in valuable flight data for the dual-bell nozzle
B2B e-marketplaces in the airline industry:process drivers and performance indicators
Competitive pressures are increasing within and between different strategically oriented groups of airlines. This paper focuses on the level of efficiency improvements gained by using e-Marketplaces in the procurement process. Findings from a survey among 88 international airlines reveal that the use of Business-to-Business (B2B) e-Marketplaces does play different roles across the various airline groupings. Airlines that are involved in strategic alliances show higher joint procurement activities than airlines that are not involved in strategic alliances. However, alliances are probably viewed as loose arrangements and thus airlines may be reluctant to share information on procurement prices and processes with another airline that could also be acting as a competitor. The financial involvement in or initiation of e-Marketplaces by airlines is very low. Low cost airlines show high use of e-Marketplaces, but demonstrate little financial involvement in contrast. Overall, the categories of spares and repairs, office supplies, tools and ground support equipment (GSE) show the greatest potential for reducing costs and increasing procurement process efficiencies. The intense competitive pressures facing carriers will make their search for tools to realise even incremental savings and efficiency gains ever more urgent.
