POTENCY AND DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY OF SPOTTED BUFFALO IN SANGGALANGI SUBDISTRICT, NORTH TORAJA DISTRICT, SOUTH SULAWESI
The aim of this research was to analyze the reproduction performances, potency and development strategy of Torajans spotted buffalo. This research was done from July to September 2010 in Sanggalangi subdistrict, North Toraja district, South Sulawesi. Purposive sampling was applied to observe data. The primary data were taken by purposive sampling method and collected by interview of 90 farmers. Results showed that sex ratio of male-female was 3:2. The first estrus was 2.48 years old, the estrus period was 23 hours and the oestrus cycle was 19 days. The first mating was 2.87 years old with the conception period about 387 days. Furthermore, the first partus was at 3.74 years old, calving interval was 2 years. Calving rate and calf crops were relatively high. Calf crops were 77%, pre weaning mortality was 2.35%. Service per conception (S/C) was 1.85 and conception rate (CR) was 86.5%. The most livelihoods in North Toraja is farmer. Spotted Buffalo population declined 24.31 % per year. SWOT analysis showed that score for internal factor was -0.25, whereas external factor was 2.25. It was showed that the sub-district Sanggalangi is in turnaround condition, so the development strategy of Torajans spotted buffalo has to minimize the weakness and reached the opportunities
Analisis Kelembagaan dan Peranannya terhadap Pendapatan Peternak di Kelompok Tani Simpay Tampomas Kabupaten Sumedang Provinsi Jawa Barat (Studi Kasus di Kelompok Peternak Kambing Simpay Tampomas Kecamatan Cimalaka Sumedang)
A survey study had been carried out in Cimalaka of Sumedang district, West Java. The objectives of the study were to analyze the institutional capacity of the Simpay Tampomas dairy goat farmers group and to understand the group roles increasing farmers income from dairy goat enterprises. The method used in this study included work performance analysis by using Likert scale, income analysis, and Rank Spearman correlation. Intercorrelated variables in this study included farmers income with organizational experience, business experience, and business scale. Seventeen farmers of Simpay Tampomas group were interviewed using questionnaires that has been provided. The results showed that farmer group was effective with the effectiveness value of 390. The Correlation between income with business scale was very strong indicated by the value of correlation coefficient of 0.722, while the correlation between income and organizational experience was -0.151. The results suggested that there was no correlation between farmers income and organizational experiences as well as between income and business experiences. The condition was relatively due to the difficulties of farmers in adopting new technology and implementating effective management in goat farming
Inhibition of urokinase plasminogen activator with a novel enzyme inhibitor, wxc-340, ameliorates endotoxin and surgery-accelerated growth of murine metastases
The urokinase plasminogen activator (u-PA) is intimately associated with tumour invasion and metastases. Surgery facilitates accelerated metastatic tumour growth in murine models, a phenomenon related to elevated perioperative bacterial lipopolysaccaride (LPS) and inflammatory cytokine levels. The objectives of the study were to examine the role of u-PA in cytokine-enhanced tumour cell invasion in vitro and surgery-induced accelerated metastatic tumour growth in vivo and to assess the potential benefit of a novel selective u-PA inhibitor WXC-340 in this setting. CT-26 murine colorectal carcinoma cells were stimulated with LPS, tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6). Cell supernatant u-PA expression and activity were determined using a colorimetric assay and Western blot analysis, respectively. Baseline and cytokine-stimulated in vitro invasion were assessed using ECmatrix invasion chambers. Two established murine models of accelerated metastatic tumour growth were used to investigate the consequences of u-PA inhibition on postoperative metastatic tumour burden. The effect of u-PA inhibition in vitro and in vivo was examined using the novel selective u-PA inhibitor, WXC-340. Proinflammatory cytokine stimulation significantly enhanced in vitro u-PA expression, activity and extracellular matrix invasion by approximately 50% compared to controls (P<0.05). This was abrogated by WXC-340. In vivo WXC-340 almost completely ameliorated both LPS- and surgery-induced, metastatic tumour growth compared to controls (P>0.05). In conclusion, u-PA cascade is actively involved in cytokine-mediated enhanced tumour cell invasion and LPS and surgery-induced metastatic tumour growth. Perioperative u-PA inhibition with WXC-340 may represent a novel therapeutic paradigm

Production Technology and Efficiency of Farmer’s Dairy Entreprises (A Case Study in the Regency of Bogor, Boyolali, and Pasuruan)
oai:ojs.jpi.faterna.unand.ac.id:article/59During for the past 10 years, milk production in Indonesia has been on the increase of approximately 70% (FAO, 2002), but it can only meet 30% of domestic needs for milk. The remaining 70% is still imported, mostly from Australia and New Zealand. Milk production in Indonesia is expected to increase to achieve an average of 15-20 liters/cow/day. It is necessary to analyze dairy enterprises to assess its feasibility. The objectives of this study were: (1) to evaluate production technology of small holder dairy farm in West Java, Central Java and East Java; (2) to analyze the efficiency of the existing dairy farming. Twenty farmers from each localities with ownership less than or equal to 10 cows, consisted of small ( 6 cows) scales were interviewed on their businesses. Economic analysis on net profit indicated by BC-Ratio, and IRR values. The dairy farming in West Java, Central Java and East Java was carried out traditionally without technological diversification, the main products were pasteurised fresh milk. Milk production was low (10 liters/cow/day). Net income of Rp 1,521,820/m/farmers, BC-Ratio 1.32, and IRR 17% indicated a low result. Improving cows ownership should be in line with the improved management and technology application
