Instrument accurately measures small temperature changes on test surface
Calorimeter apparatus accurately measures very small temperature rises on a test surface subjected to aerodynamic heating. A continuous thin sheet of a sensing material is attached to a base support plate through which a series of holes of known diameter have been drilled for attaching thermocouples to the material

A Poisson process approximation for generalized K-5 confidence regions
One-sided confidence regions for continuous cumulative distribution functions are constructed using empirical cumulative distribution functions and the generalized Kolmogorov-Smirnov distance. The band width of such regions becomes narrower in the right or left tail of the distribution. To avoid tedious computation of confidence levels and critical values, an approximation based on the Poisson process is introduced. This aproximation provides a conservative confidence region; moreover, the approximation error decreases monotonically to 0 as sample size increases. Critical values necessary for implementation are given. Applications are made to the areas of risk analysis, investment modeling, reliability assessment, and analysis of fault tolerant systems

Numerical methods for the design and analysis of wings at supersonic speeds
Numerical methods for the design and analysis of arbitrary-planform wings at supersonic speeds are reviewed. Certain deficiencies are revealed, particularly in application to wings with slightly subsonic leading edges. Recently devised numerical techniques which overcome the major part of these deficiencies are presented. The original development as well as the more recent revisions are subjected to a thorough review
Oscillator strength trends in group IVb homologous ions
Shock tube data are used to examine the systematic f value behavior in prominent visible transition arrays (ns-np, np-(n+l)s, np-nd) for the homologous emitter sequence Si 11, Ge 11, Sn 11, and Pb 11. Regularities found for these data are compared with trends in lighter elements. Agreements and s disparities with theoretical and experimental oscillator strengths from the literature are noted
Measurement-dependent corrections to work distributions arising from quantum coherences
For a quantum system undergoing a unitary process work is commonly defined
based on the Two Projective Measurement (TPM) protocol which measures the
energies of the system before and after the process. However, it is well known
that projective measurements disregard quantum coherences of the system with
respect to the energy basis, thus removing potential quantum signatures in the
work distribution. Here we consider weak measurements of the system's energy
difference and establish corrections to work averages arising from initial
system coherences. We discuss two weak measurement protocols that couple the
system to a detector, prepared and measured either in the momentum or the
position eigenstates. Work averages are derived for when the system starts in
the proper thermal state versus when the initial system state is a pure state
with thermal diagonal elements and coherences characterised by a set of phases.
We show that by controlling only the phase differences between the energy
eigenstate contributions in the system's initial pure state, the average work
done during the same unitary process can be controlled. By changing the phases
alone one can toggle from regimes where the systems absorbs energy, i.e. a work
cost, to the ones where it emits energy, i.e. work can be drawn. This suggests
that the coherences are additional resources that can be used to manipulate or
store energy in a quantum system.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Glueball enhancement by color de-confinement
High energy heavy ion collisions lead to the formation of a strong coupling
de-confined phase in which the lightest glueballs are numerous and stable. We
analyze how their properties manifest themselves in experimental spectra and
show that they provide a good signature for color de-confinement.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
